Choose a code editor by checking how well it supports your languages and projects, the tools you use every day, and the editing style you prefer. Then try your likely candidates on the same real project. The right choice is the one that handles your frequent work reliably without demanding more setup and maintenance than you want—not a universal winner.
Which code editor should you use?
Start with your work, not a feature checklist. An editor that is excellent for one language or team may be a poor fit for another if it lacks the required debugger, framework support, project navigation, or remote workflow. A product’s general feature list does not guarantee that every feature works with your particular language, runtime, build system, or test framework.
There are two broad approaches to consider. An extensible editor or workbench provides a configurable base that you can add language and tooling support to. An integrated development environment (IDE) tends to present a more project-oriented set of development tools together. These categories overlap: an editor can include debugging and source control, and an IDE can offer plugins that change how you work. Compare actual capabilities for your stack rather than relying on the label.

For example, Visual Studio Code (VS Code) documents an integrated terminal, project workspaces, debugging, tasks, and extension-based support for languages and other tools. Its language-aware features depend on built-in language support or selected extensions. IntelliJ IDEA’s feature documentation describes a project-oriented environment that includes assistance such as debugging, refactoring, Git, and terminal features. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent head-to-head benchmark. See the VS Code core editor features and IntelliJ IDEA features pages for their own descriptions.

If you are unsure, shortlist a small number of editors that support your required stack, then test each against the same project and tasks. The steps later in this guide explain how to do that without letting a flashy feature list decide for you.
What features should you look for in a code editor?
Use the criteria below to distinguish essential requirements from conveniences. A feature is only useful if it works with your project and fits the way you work.
| Criterion | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Language and project support | Your exact languages, frameworks, build system, and project structure | Support can be built in, supplied by an extension, or absent for a particular part of your stack. |
| Code understanding | Completion, parameter information, inline documentation, definition and reference navigation, and refactoring | These determine how effectively the editor helps you understand and change code rather than merely display text. |
| Run, debug, and test loop | Breakpoints, stepping, program-state inspection, test discovery and execution, and repeatable commands | Tool integration needs to match your runtime and test framework. |
| Source control | Diffs, staging, commits, branches, conflict handling, history, and any team workflows you need | An editor’s Git support does not necessarily include every hosting-service workflow or install Git for you. |
| Project and terminal workflow | Multi-file context, integrated shell, remote machines, and containers | These affect how much you need to switch between the editor and other tools. |
| Interaction and configuration | Mouse and keyboard workflows, shortcut changes, plugins, and keymap compatibility | A familiar editing style can help, but customization can bring setup and conflict-management work. |
| Constraints and ongoing effort | Operating-system compatibility, licensing, hardware, privacy or organizational rules, and maintenance effort | A technically capable editor may still be unsuitable under your practical constraints. |
Match support to the language and project
Write down the languages and frameworks you actually use, then include the surrounding tools: build system, runtime, package manager, and test framework where relevant. Check each candidate for those exact combinations. “Supports this language” can mean anything from syntax highlighting to code navigation, refactoring, debugging, or testing. Do not assume that one level of support implies the others.
In an extensible editor, identify which capabilities are built in and which require an extension. VS Code documents that its language-aware assistance varies with built-in support and extensions. An extension can add language, debugger, source-control, or service support, but you should confirm the specific integration you need rather than infer it from the editor’s flexibility. The VS Code feature documentation describes this distinction.
Test code understanding on your codebase
Check whether completion is useful in your project, whether parameter information appears when you need it, and whether inline documentation is available for the libraries you use. Try navigating to a definition and finding references from ordinary project code—not just a small demonstration file. If you routinely change existing code, test the refactoring actions you expect to use and inspect the resulting changes.

These checks help separate basic text editing from language-aware assistance. The latter depends on the language and its support in the editor, so the result you get on one project may not carry over to another.
Evaluate debugging, testing, and recurring commands
Consider the whole loop from changing code to checking the result. If you debug inside the editor, see whether you can set breakpoints, step through execution, and inspect program state with your runtime. For tests, check whether the editor discovers and runs the tests in your framework and presents results in a useful way. Also decide whether recurring commands should be launched from the editor or remain in an external shell or tool.

That makes the important question not simply whether an editor has a testing interface, but whether the right extension supports your framework and workflow. Consult the VS Code core editor documentation and verify the candidate against your actual runtime and test setup.
Check source control beyond the word “Git”
List the source-control actions you perform: reviewing diffs, staging selected changes, committing, switching branches, resolving conflicts, or looking through history. Then check which of those actions the editor handles and whether the workflow suits your project. If your team relies on hosting-service features such as pull requests or issue workflows, check those separately; basic Git integration does not establish that those features are included.
VS Code includes Git support, but its documentation says the Git executable must be installed separately for Git operations. Its GitHub pull-request and issue workflows use an extension. The VS Code source control documentation explains those requirements. Treat the editor integration and the underlying Git installation as separate parts of the setup.

Account for the project, shell, and where code runs
For work that spans multiple files or repositories, evaluate how the editor represents project context and helps you move between files. Check whether the integrated terminal fits your shell habits and whether you can run the commands your project needs. If you work on remote machines or in containers, verify that the editor supports the environment you actually use and that the workflow remains practical there.
VS Code documents workspaces, an integrated terminal, and remote or container development. Those capabilities may be relevant if you want editing and project tools in one workbench, but confirm the setup and integrations required for your own environment in the official feature documentation.
Include customization and maintenance in the decision
Keymaps, extensions, plugins, project settings, and language configurations can make an editor fit your habits. They also become things you may need to configure, update, troubleshoot, or keep consistent across machines and teammates. Count that effort as part of the choice. A highly configurable editor is not automatically the easiest one for your circumstances.
If you prefer Vim-style motions but want to work inside an IDE, IntelliJ IDEA supports the IdeaVim plugin. JetBrains documents normal, insert, and visual modes and a Vim-style configuration file; it also notes that shortcut conflicts may need attention. See Vim in IntelliJ IDEA for the documented behavior. This is one example of an interaction preference being available through a plugin, not a reason to assume every keybinding will work without adjustment.
Do you need an IDE or a lightweight editor?
Choose based on the tools and setup you need, not on a presumed hierarchy in which one category is always more capable. If you want an environment that brings editing together with a terminal, Git, debugging, testing, and extensions, an extensible workbench may suit you. If you value a project-oriented environment with integrated assistance such as debugging, refactoring, Git, and terminal features, an IDE may suit you. If you mostly need to edit files and prefer to run other tools separately, a lighter setup may be sufficient—but verify that it still handles the language-aware tasks you rely on.

| Extensible editor or workbench, such as VS Code | You want a configurable environment for editing, terminal use, Git, debugging or testing, extensions, and local or remote work. | Which required language features and integrations are built in, which need extensions, and whether those extensions support your project. |
| Integrated IDE, such as IntelliJ IDEA | You value a project-oriented environment with built-in assistance for tasks such as debugging, refactoring, Git, and terminal use. | Whether the documented capabilities fit your language, project, edition, and daily workflow. |
| IDE with a modal editing plugin | You want Vim-style editing motions within an IDE. | Whether the plugin supports the modes and configuration you expect, and whether shortcut conflicts need changes. |
The table describes examples, not an exhaustive ranking. Editors and IDEs overlap, and capabilities can vary with language, edition, and extension configuration. The cited feature descriptions are from Microsoft and JetBrains; they do not establish an independent, like-for-like performance or productivity comparison.
How to compare candidates on your own work
A short, consistent trial is more informative than installing many extensions in one candidate and comparing it with another in a default state. Use a representative project and repeat the same tasks. You do not need a formal benchmark: the goal is to find setup gaps and workflow friction before you commit to configuring an editor.
- List your main work. Write down the two or three languages and project types you handle most often. Include any framework or build system that is essential to your work.
- Identify your time-consuming tasks. Note where time goes: understanding unfamiliar code, navigating a large project, debugging, running tests, reviewing Git changes, working remotely, or switching between repositories. Distinguish daily necessities from occasional conveniences.
- Set must-haves and nice-to-haves. For each task, state what successful support looks like. For example, decide whether you need to run tests from the editor or are comfortable using an external command, and whether remote development is required or merely useful.
- Shortlist a few plausible candidates. Check official documentation for language and tool support, and note whether each capability is built in or depends on a particular extension or plugin. Also check operating-system compatibility, licensing, hardware, privacy, and organizational policies directly with the vendor.
- Use the same representative project in each candidate. Include enough of your normal project structure to exercise the tools you need. Avoid judging a candidate solely on an empty file or a small tutorial example.
- Repeat the same tasks. Try navigation and refactoring, run or debug the project, execute tests, review and stage a change in Git, use the terminal, and test remote or container work if you need it. Record whether each task works and what setup it required.
- Include configuration cost. Count the time and effort needed to configure and maintain extensions, plugins, keymaps, and project settings. Consider whether required tools must be installed separately and whether teammates need matching setup.
- Choose for frequent, reliable work. Prefer the candidate that meets your important requirements with manageable friction. Revisit the choice if your stack, team constraints, or workflow changes.
Use a simple decision record
For each candidate, keep a short note with the task, result, and any dependency. A useful format is “task: works / does not work / not tested; built in or extension; setup required; friction.” This prevents an attractive feature name from being mistaken for a verified fit and makes trade-offs visible when one editor wins on one task but loses on another.
Do not turn the trial into a popularity contest or infer productivity from how many features appear in a product page. The reviewed official documentation does not provide a like-for-like independent benchmark or a complete current licensing comparison. Your own project is the relevant test environment.
What can make an editor a poor fit?
Assuming language support means every tool is ready
Syntax coloring or a language extension does not by itself confirm that completion, refactoring, debugging, or test discovery will work. Check the particular capability and the dependencies it needs. In an extension-based editor, make sure the extensions you rely on are maintained and compatible with one another.

Choosing by feature count instead of daily use
A broad toolset can be valuable if you use it. Otherwise, configuring and maintaining features you do not need may add overhead. Give more weight to the tasks that repeatedly slow you down and the requirements you cannot work around.
Overlooking the tools around the editor
Source control, language support, and testing can depend on separate installations or extensions. Confirm prerequisites—such as a separately installed Git executable for VS Code Git operations—and verify the integration on your machine. If an editor action fails, check the relevant extension or external tool before concluding that the project itself is at fault.
Ignoring constraints until after setup
Before investing time in configuration, check the candidate’s current licensing, operating-system compatibility, hardware requirements, and any privacy or organization rules that apply. The feature pages cited here do not provide a complete current price comparison, so verify licensing and other constraints directly with the vendor for your edition and circumstances.
When should you reconsider your choice?
Re-evaluate when your work changes materially: you adopt a new language or framework, move to a different build or test setup, start working remotely, or encounter new team or organizational requirements. A choice that fits one project may not fit another. Use the same criteria again and test the new workflow rather than assuming that an earlier decision remains suitable.
