Start with the country and mobile carrier you’ll use, then check the exact phone model and regional variant with that carrier before you buy. “Unlocked” only means the phone isn’t restricted to one carrier; it does not guarantee that the carrier will activate it or that every network feature will work.

Start with your country, carrier, and network

Compatibility depends on where you’ll use the phone and which carrier or MVNO provides service. If an MVNO lets you choose between network options, identify the one you plan to use. There is no universal list of LTE or 5G bands that guarantees a phone will work everywhere.

Carrier guidance illustrates why the network matters. T-Mobile’s BYOD guide directs customers to check device compatibility and frequencies, including VoLTE and Extended Range LTE. Google Fi specifies Android 7.0 or later, LTE bands 2 and 4, and VoLTE for its network connectivity. Tello lists LTE bands 2, 4, and 12 as its minimum. These are provider-specific requirements, not general rules for other carriers.

For a Canadian example, Rogers’ BYOD guidance says customers should compare their device’s frequencies with Rogers’ published bands. It also warns that VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling may not work on a device bought elsewhere even when its frequencies match. Rogers says LTE and VoLTE calling are required as it retires 3G; that requirement should not be generalized to other providers.

Identify the exact phone variant

Before comparing phones, find the precise model number and country or region version—not just the name printed on the box or product page. Phones in the same product family can have different radio bands or carrier support in different markets. Check whether the listing is for a factory-unlocked model or a carrier-locked one, too.

Prefer the manufacturer’s version intended for your market, then verify that exact model with your carrier. An international variant can differ from a local version even when the retail name looks identical.

Check the IMEI with the carrier before paying

An IMEI is a device identifier. A carrier’s checker can screen an exact phone for compatibility and, in some cases, device eligibility or lock status. Use the carrier’s official tool before purchase; if its result is unclear, ask the carrier to explain what it means for activation and service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Get the IMEI for the phone you’ll actually buy. If you’re shopping online, confirm that the seller can provide the IMEI for that specific device before you commit.
  2. Open the carrier’s BYOD or compatibility checker. Enter the IMEI and follow any prompts about the network or plan.
  3. Read the result carefully. If the carrier marks the device partially compatible or does not clearly confirm activation, contact support rather than assuming it will work.
  4. Check return terms before purchase. Compatibility and eligibility results do not replace a return policy if the phone fails to activate or lacks a feature you need.

T-Mobile’s BYOD checker guidance describes the IMEI check as a way to assess compatibility and lock status. T-Mobile also says it cannot guarantee functionality or performance for devices it did not sell or authorize. Treat a positive checker result as a useful screening step, not a promise of identical performance across all devices.

Compare bands and calling features

After the IMEI check, compare the exact model’s LTE and 5G frequencies with the carrier’s published network frequencies. Use the manufacturer’s specification for that model number and the carrier’s own band list. A match on some bands does not establish full compatibility: additional supported frequencies can matter for coverage, and data-band support alone does not confirm that voice calls will work.

  • VoLTE: Confirm that the phone supports Voice over LTE and that the carrier accepts it on that device. This is especially important where a provider is retiring older networks or requires LTE calling.
  • Wi-Fi Calling: Check support if you rely on it, and confirm carrier acceptance. Frequency compatibility does not ensure that this feature is available on an imported or otherwise unsupported model.
  • eSIM: Check it only if you need to activate service digitally or use a second line that way. Confirm both phone and carrier support for your intended setup.

Carrier pages can label a phone “partially compatible.” T-Mobile says partial compatibility may mean missing network technologies or frequencies, which can reduce coverage or data speeds. Decide whether those trade-offs are acceptable; for a primary phone, a carrier-confirmed fully compatible model is the safer choice.

Compare budget phones only after compatibility passes

Once a candidate clears the carrier checks, compare its overall value rather than choosing by the lowest advertised price or a 5G label alone. Consider:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Upfront price, distinguishing a manufacturer’s suggested retail price from a temporary offer or live selling price.
  • Storage capacity, battery, durability, and software-support expectations, using current specifications for the exact model.
  • Warranty, seller, and return terms, particularly if buying from a third party.
  • Whether the model is the same regional variant you checked with the carrier.

For scale, Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP sheet lists the unlocked 128GB Galaxy A16 5G at $169.99. That is a dated manufacturer MSRP, not a guaranteed current selling price or a compatibility promise for every A16 5G variant. T-Mobile’s Galaxy A16 5G product listing includes model-specific LTE and 5G bands; compare the exact model number you’re considering with your carrier before purchase. It is an example to investigate, not an unconditional recommendation.

Use a side-by-side checklist for finalists

If you’re choosing between two or more phones, compare them on the same evidence rather than assuming similar names mean similar support.

What to compare What to verify
Carrier result IMEI checker result for the exact device; contact the carrier if the status is unclear.
Lock and variant Whether it is unlocked, its model number, and the country or region version.
Network support Supported LTE and 5G frequencies matched against the carrier’s published frequencies.
Calling and other features Carrier acceptance of VoLTE and, if needed, Wi-Fi Calling and eSIM.
Purchase terms Dated price, seller, warranty, and return policy.
Everyday value Storage, battery, durability, and software support, verified from current model-specific information.

Finish the checks at checkout

Carrier eligibility, device availability, unlock conditions, and prices can change. Recheck the official carrier and manufacturer information close to purchase, make sure the listing’s model number matches the one you checked, and review the seller’s return terms. If the phone is locked, has an uncertain IMEI result, or only partially supports the network, resolve that issue before relying on it as your main phone.
