Choose a headset by checking your exact devices first, then deciding whether a wired connection or wireless freedom suits your routine. For a headset that also handles calls and everyday listening, prioritize a compatible connection, an easy-to-use microphone mute, and a fit you can wear comfortably—not a product label or one headline specification.
Start with the devices you need to connect
Write down the exact console, computer, and phone you plan to use. Then confirm that the specific headset version supports each device through the connection you intend to use. A model name, a “wireless” label, or general cross-platform language does not guarantee that every feature works on every platform.
Do not assume ordinary Bluetooth headphones will carry game audio on a console. Turtle Beach’s July 24, 2026 connection guide says standard Bluetooth is not supported for game audio on PS5 or Xbox; Bluetooth can work for PC and mobile. A wired 3.5 mm connection or a compatible USB wireless system may be an option, but support depends on the headset and console. Turtle Beach’s connection guide explains the relevant connection options.
Logitech likewise advises checking wired versus wireless and multi-device compatibility early in the choice. Its PlayStation guide says most Logitech G and ASTRO headsets connect to PS4 and PS5 over USB or 3.5 mm; verify the exact model and configuration before buying. Logitech’s PlayStation headset guide provides its compatibility guidance.

Choose wired or wireless for your routine
| Connection | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wired 3.5 mm | A fixed desk or controller setup where the cable reaches | Confirm the device has a compatible jack and that the headset supports it. A wired connection avoids charging the headset. |
| Wireless 2.4 GHz | Gaming where low latency and room to move matter | Check console or computer compatibility, the required USB dongle or other transmitter, and battery life in this mode. |
| Bluetooth | Phone listening and compatible PC or mobile use | Check whether it supports the gaming device you intend to use. Standard Bluetooth does not provide game audio on PS5 or Xbox, according to Turtle Beach’s July 2026 guide. |
Wireless does not automatically mean that a headset can connect to a console and phone in the way you want. Some models switch between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth; some support simultaneous connections. Treat switching and simultaneous use as separate product features, and confirm them in the specifications. SoundGuys’ 2026 wireless-headset guide recommends considering 2.4 GHz for gaming and Bluetooth for mobile convenience. That guide is sponsored by HyperX. Read SoundGuys’ wireless gaming headset guide.
Look for a usable microphone and mute control
For multiplayer chat and work or personal calls, a boom microphone that sits near your mouth is a practical feature to look for. SoundGuys says a close boom mic will typically deliver the best microphone quality; this is general buying guidance, not a comparative test showing that one budget model sounds better than another. A physical mute that is easy to reach can prevent accidental transmission. Flip-to-mute and detachable booms are options to consider.
As examples of features—not test winners—Logitech describes the ASTRO A10 as having a flip-to-mute microphone, and Turtle Beach describes the Recon 70 as a budget-friendly wired 3.5 mm headset. Check the exact version and target-device compatibility for either model. Logitech’s ASTRO A10 information and Turtle Beach’s connection guide describe these examples.

Judge comfort by fit, materials, and adjustability
A headset can feel comfortable in a short store visit but become tiring during a long session. If possible, try it on or buy from a seller with a return option. Pay attention to:
- Ear-cup size and depth: Make sure the cups fit around your ears rather than pressing on them.
- Clamping pressure and adjustment: Check that the headband adjusts to your head without feeling too tight.
- Weight and movement: A lighter-feeling fit and cups that rotate or settle naturally can matter over longer sessions.
- Pad material and heat: SoundGuys notes that leatherette can help seal out noise but may retain heat, while microfiber is more breathable. These are trade-offs, not a universal comfort ranking.
Logitech describes the ASTRO A10 as having a padded headband and earcups, but padding alone cannot establish whether it will fit you well. Your head shape, glasses, and tolerance for heat or pressure all affect comfort.

For wireless, compare battery life by connection mode
Battery ratings are useful only when you know the conditions behind them. Check whether the stated runtime applies to Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz, or both connections at once, and whether lighting or other features affect it. SoundGuys’ 2026 guide recommends looking for at least 50 hours if reducing charging frequency is important; that is its recommendation, not a universal minimum.
The same sponsored guide reports a manufacturer rating of up to 250 hours for the HyperX Cloud Alpha 2 Wireless over 2.4 GHz. It is a mode-specific product claim, not an independent comparison across headsets; simultaneous Bluetooth use and RGB lighting may reduce runtime. Do not compare a rating for one connection mode directly with another model’s figure unless the conditions match.

There is no established market-wide price boundary for “budget” in the cited guidance, and current local prices and stock are not established here. Set a maximum you are comfortable spending, then compare compatible options against your needs rather than assuming that the lowest price or a “budget-friendly” description identifies the best value.

For instance, Logitech calls the ASTRO A10 budget-friendly and describes cross-platform support, a flip-to-mute mic, and padded headband and earcups. Turtle Beach presents the Recon 70 as a budget-friendly wired 3.5 mm example. These descriptions identify possible options to investigate; they do not establish independent test results or make either headset the best choice for every device and listener. Confirm the exact version’s compatibility and current local price before purchasing.
