Start with where you will use the speaker most. A compact model is easier to carry for travel and personal listening; a larger speaker is generally better suited to filling a room or bringing more bass and volume to a gathering. For outdoor use, match its dust and water protection to the conditions it will face. Then compare realistic battery expectations, charging, size, and the features your phone can actually use.
How to choose a Bluetooth speaker for your room, travel, or outdoor use
There is no single best size or feature set for everyone. Decide which setting matters most, then weigh portability against sound output, exposure protection, runtime, and compatibility. If you need one speaker for several settings, choose the compromise you will be happiest carrying and listening to most often.
Choose for your main setting
For a room
Consider the room’s size and where the speaker will sit. Bang & Olufsen says larger interiors need more power and richer bass to fill them, while smaller rooms need less raw power (Bang & Olufsen). A stationary home speaker can prioritize larger drivers and fixed power instead of battery life and ruggedness, according to RTINGS (RTINGS). Room use does not always mean a dry environment: a kitchen or bathroom speaker may still encounter splashes or dust.

Prioritize the speaker’s actual dimensions and weight, then ask whether its runtime suits the outing. Bose describes compact speakers as options for travel and moving around the home (Bose). A small speaker is easier to pack, but it may not deliver the output or bass you want in a large space.

For outdoor use
Match the protection rating to the likely exposure. An IP code’s first digit indicates dust protection and its second indicates water protection; an X means protection for that part of the rating is not specified or tested. LG describes IPX5 as protection against water jets, with dust protection untested, and IP67 as dust-tight with the ability to survive 30 minutes under 1 metre of water. RTINGS gives the same IP67 immersion condition (LG; RTINGS).
Those are rating conditions, not guarantees against every kind of water, pressure, or use. Follow the specific product’s limits, and for sand or dusty settings look for a rating that includes dust protection.

For a mix of settings
A portable speaker is a sensible compromise if you will carry it often and need personal or moderate-volume listening. If your priority is filling a room or providing party-level volume, consider a larger speaker or a compatible multi-speaker setup. Pairing methods and cross-speaker compatibility vary, so check support for the exact models you plan to use.

Check battery claims against how you listen
A manufacturer’s maximum playtime is conditional, not a promise of how long every listener will get. LG says its playtime figures are based on internal testing at 50 percent volume with lighting off; higher volume and enabled lighting affect runtime (LG). RTINGS also notes that maximum volume drains a battery faster and that recharge times vary (RTINGS).

Compare test conditions rather than treating advertised maximums as directly comparable across brands. Think about your usual listening volume and session length, and check both charging connector and recharge information for the exact model.

Verify connectivity and phone compatibility
- Codec: A codec feature matters only if both your phone and the speaker support the same codec. Check both devices before paying extra.
- Video latency: If you will watch video through the speaker, latency can vary by device and app; consult measured latency information where that use matters.
- Range: Check the product’s Bluetooth range if you expect to move away from the speaker outdoors.
- Multipoint and pairing: Confirm the exact product’s support for multipoint or linking a second speaker. Features and compatible models vary by system.
