Start with the discs you want to play: standard Blu-ray and DVD libraries work with a standard Blu-ray player, but Ultra HD Blu-ray discs require a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Then match the player’s video formats and connections to your TV or projector and to the receiver or soundbar in your audio path. Treat streaming apps and USB playback as optional extras, not reasons to overlook disc and HDMI compatibility.

1. Choose a player that supports your discs

A television’s resolution does not determine which discs a player can read. If you want to watch UHD discs, choose a player explicitly specified for Ultra HD Blu-ray; a 4K TV does not make a regular Blu-ray player compatible with them. A standard Blu-ray player remains an option for standard Blu-ray and DVD collections.

Sony describes UHD discs as having “four times the resolution of conventional Blu-ray (Full HD).” That is the manufacturer’s resolution comparison, not an independent picture-quality test. Check the exact player’s disc-format list, as well as region and recorded-disc support, against the discs you own or plan to buy. “4K” or “UHD” branding alone does not establish region-free playback.

2. Match the player’s picture formats to the display

4K output and upscaling

For 4K output or upscaling, the display and HDMI connection must support the intended signal. Sony states that “4K upscaling and output require a compatible 4K display and HDMI® cable” on its UBP-X700K product page. Check which input on the TV or projector supports 4K and connect the player to that input. Upscaling is not the same as playing a UHD disc: it processes lower-resolution content for output to a compatible display.

HDR formats

HDR support is format-specific. Compare the HDR formats listed for the player with those supported by your TV or projector and the discs you watch. For example, Sony lists HDR10 and Dolby Vision for the UBP-X700K, while Panasonic’s Hong Kong DP-UB450 specification lists HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG. These examples show why a single “HDR” label is not enough to establish compatibility.

A compatible HDR display is needed to benefit from HDR output. Sony says that when HDR content is sent to a non-HDR TV, HDR features are adjusted to SDR according to the TV type. Check the display and player manuals for supported formats and any relevant output settings.

  • Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality

3. Check the whole HDMI path, not just the player

When the player connects through a receiver or soundbar, that device must pass the video formats you want to use on the way to the display. If it does not, a player with a second audio-only HDMI output may provide another routing option: send video directly to the TV or projector and audio to the sound system. This depends on the exact player, receiver, settings, and signal formats, so verify the manuals before choosing this arrangement.

For 4K connections, Sony Support recommends a 4K HDMI cable with 18 Gbps bandwidth or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable in its HDMI functions guidance. Panasonic’s cited DP-UB450 specification says a high-speed 18 Gbps cable is required for 4K/60p. Check the cable you already have and whether one is included with the player before buying another.

4. Make sure the audio format and output suit your system

Check which audio formats the player can pass through or decode and which formats the receiver or soundbar accepts. Then confirm that the chosen HDMI route supports the desired result. A player listing Dolby Atmos or DTS-related support does not, by itself, guarantee that your system will receive that format: player behavior, settings, HDMI routing, and the receiver’s compatibility all matter.

If your receiver is older, compare the player’s HDMI output arrangement with the connections available on the receiver and display. A separate audio-only HDMI output can be useful when the receiver cannot pass the desired video to the display, but check the specific manuals rather than assuming every two-output setup will work the same way.

6. Treat apps and USB playback as secondary features

Consider network apps or USB file playback only if they add something your TV and other devices do not already provide. Check the exact player’s app list and supported USB file types and drives; these capabilities vary. USB playback is not required for disc playback, and an external drive is only relevant if the player supports the files and drive you intend to use.

A practical selection checklist

  • List the disc formats and regions you need to play.
  • Confirm that the player supports those discs; choose Ultra HD Blu-ray capability for UHD discs.
  • Match 4K output and the player’s HDR formats to the display’s supported inputs and formats.
  • Trace the HDMI route through any receiver or soundbar and check its video passthrough and audio-format compatibility.
  • Check whether a second audio-only HDMI output is useful for your equipment.
  • Verify regional power and disc specifications for the exact model, and check any app or USB features only if you need them.
  • Inspect your existing HDMI cable and the package contents before purchasing a cable.
