There is no universally “perfect” Blu-ray drive for a Plex library. Choose by the discs you own, then verify the exact drive model and firmware against current MakeMKV compatibility information. For UHD Blu-ray, MakeMKV’s stated requirement is a BDXL-compatible LibreDrive drive; ordinary Blu-ray does not have that same UHD-specific requirement.
Start with the discs you want to rip
For standard Blu-ray discs, check that the specific drive works with your ripping software. If your collection includes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, treat compatibility as a stricter filter: MakeMKV’s UHD FAQ, last updated March 7, 2021, says UHD discs require a BDXL-compatible LibreDrive drive and points users to current UHD-drive guidance.
- Standard Blu-ray: confirm the exact model and firmware work with the software you plan to use.
- UHD Blu-ray: confirm both BDXL compatibility and LibreDrive support for the exact model and firmware.
A brand name or a retailer listing alone does not establish that a drive meets those requirements.

MakeMKV compatibility can depend on firmware as well as the drive model, and supported combinations can change. The freemkv unlocked-drive documentation notes that support varies by drive and firmware and changes with releases. Check the current information for the exact configuration rather than relying on an old compatibility list or a seller’s broad claim.

This matters especially for Pioneer drives. In a November 4, 2025 forum post, MakeMKV administrator mike wrote: “Today we pushed a major SDF.bin update. Most Pioneer drives should work now as is, without the need for a firmware update.” The statement applies to “most” drives, not every Pioneer model; check the current supported-firmware information in the SDF update post and MakeMKV’s drive guidance before assuming your drive is covered. It also means older blanket warnings about modern Pioneer firmware may be out of date.
Choose a form factor and connection that fit your setup
An internal SATA drive can suit a desktop with an available bay and connection. An external USB drive is easier to attach to a computer without opening it. If you put an internal drive in an external enclosure, match the enclosure to the drive’s size and interface, and check the connection available on the host computer.

Connection speed can constrain throughput. In a May 16, 2020 post about LibreDrive v6, MakeMKV administrator mike estimated a USB 2.0 speed cap of about 30 MB/sec and said a USB 3.0 enclosure was needed to reach the full speed of an unlocked drive. That is a technical caveat from a dated post, not a guaranteed rip speed: it does not establish a real-world time for a particular disc or drive. The same post says speed unlocking does not work with slim drives and is disabled for UHD discs in friendly drives. Read the full LibreDrive v6 discussion in context rather than treating its speed notes as a universal promise.

Follow the workflow from disc to Plex playback
- Identify the disc format. Decide whether your collection contains standard Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray, or both.
- Match a drive to the discs. For UHD, check BDXL and LibreDrive requirements; for either format, verify the exact model and firmware against current MakeMKV information.
- Connect the drive appropriately. Choose internal SATA or external USB according to your computer and setup; consider the host connection and enclosure when using an external arrangement.
- Use compatible ripping software and create your media file. Drive compatibility is only one part of converting a disc into a file.
- Check playback on the Plex client you use. A file that can be created successfully may still not play directly on every television or other client.
Why a successful rip may still need Plex transcoding
The optical drive and ripping software determine whether you can create a file; the playback device determines whether it can play that file directly. Plex explains that formats a device cannot play directly may require transcoding by Plex Media Server. Its media-format support guidance is framed around supported formats on smart TVs, so check the specifications for your own client rather than assuming every Plex app supports the same formats.
