Choose a biogas-to-hydrogen system by matching a measured, dependable supply of suitably clean biogas to your hydrogen demand, then compare complete process and lifecycle costs on the same basis. A digester’s nameplate capacity or a generic cost per unit of hydrogen is not enough: gas composition, contaminants, operating schedule, required hydrogen purity and pressure, and the cost boundary all change the answer.

Can biogas be used to produce hydrogen?

Yes. Biogas can serve as feed gas for hydrogen production, but it is not ready to use in a reformer without assessing its composition and contaminants. A project must account for gas cleaning, conversion, hydrogen conditioning and purification, and any compression, storage, or delivery included in the product requirement.

There is no universally best configuration or site-independent methane-to-hydrogen sizing ratio established by the sources cited here. A vendor’s mass and energy balance should instead use your analyzed gas and stated output, purity, pressure, and availability requirements.

What should you define before choosing a system?

Specify the hydrogen product and cost boundary

Write down the required hydrogen output rate, purity, pressure, and operating schedule. Then define where the system boundary ends: at the plant gate, or after compression, storage, and delivery. Costs for hydrogen at the plant gate cannot be compared fairly with costs for delivered hydrogen unless the difference in scope is accounted for.

Also state the emissions accounting boundary and which utilities are available at the site. These choices affect which equipment and costs belong in a proposal.

Describe the site and demand profile

Prepare the location, hydrogen demand profile, expected annual uptime, utility availability, and site-specific infrastructure requirements. Include seasonal variation in both gas supply and hydrogen demand where applicable. These inputs help distinguish a system that fits an average-day estimate from one that can meet dependable operating needs.

What size biogas reformer do you need?

Size it against measured, dependable methane supply and the hydrogen demand profile—not feedstock tonnage or digester nameplate capacity alone. Collect actual biogas flow and composition across representative operating periods, then account for variability and expected downtime. A reformer that is too large for the reliable gas supply may be underused; one sized to an annual average may not meet demand during lower-supply periods.

Scale can improve unit capital costs, but only when enough feedstock can be collected and delivered consistently and economically. The International Energy Agency (IEA) identifies plant size and feedstock characteristics as cost factors. Its 2020 outlook also describes the collection and logistics challenge of securing sustained quantities for larger operations, alongside scale economies in biogas plant capital costs.

Do not apply a universal methane-to-hydrogen yield from generic figures. Ask vendors to provide a mass and energy balance based on your analyzed feed gas and required hydrogen specification, including stated assumptions about uptime and feed variation.

What feedstock and raw-gas data should you collect?

“Manure,” “wastewater gas,” or “landfill gas” is not a complete feed specification. The biological feedstock category does not tell a reformer designer the actual gas composition, flow stability, or contaminant levels. The IEA’s 2025 assessment groups feedstocks into crop residues, manure, biowaste, and woody biomass, while emphasizing the importance of local availability and infrastructure. For system selection, the relevant input is the gas stream produced at your site.

  • Biogas flow range and variation over representative operating periods.
  • Methane and carbon dioxide fractions.
  • Sulfur compounds, including hydrogen sulfide where relevant.
  • Siloxanes where relevant to the source gas and process design.
  • Moisture and other contaminants identified by the process designer.
  • Seasonal changes and any known interruptions or operating constraints.

These are design inputs, not a universal acceptance specification. The European Commission’s BIO-HYDROGEN project used model biogas containing 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide and tested catalysts with added hydrogen sulfide; those were project test conditions, not general requirements for commercial systems. The project report also noted that siloxane removal by biofilters had not then been realized in that project.

Which process stages belong in the comparison?

Compare complete process configurations rather than reformer equipment in isolation. The European Commission project treated gas cleaning and reforming as distinct engineering tasks. A 2024 review of biogas reforming covers reforming methods, purification, utilities, and techno-economics, all of which can affect the system choice.

  1. Raw-gas handling and cleaning: define contaminant removal, conditioning, and any required media or replacement schedule for the analyzed feed.
  2. Reforming: compare the proposed conversion process using the same feed composition and operating assumptions.
  3. Hydrogen conditioning and purification: state the required product purity and pressure and identify the equipment needed to achieve them.
  4. Utilities and heat integration: account for process heat, steam, electricity, and water requirements, along with site availability.
  5. Product handling: include compression, storage, and delivery equipment if those are inside the defined cost boundary.

Evaluate proposals against common criteria: output and purity, tolerance of feed variability and contaminants, cleaning requirements, heat and power demand, uptime and maintenance, operating scale, emissions boundary, and installed and operating costs. The available evidence does not establish one reforming pathway as best for every site.

What affects the cost of hydrogen from biogas?

A credible estimate includes the full system boundary, not just the reformer purchase price. The IEA identifies system size, feedstock composition and quality, collection radius, and infrastructure as cost drivers, and notes that biogas projects can have relatively high ongoing operating expenses.

Cost area Items to include or clarify
Capital and installation Process equipment, gas cleaning, reforming, purification, installation, and site-specific infrastructure or interconnection.
Feedstock and gas preparation Feedstock collection and conditioning, collection distance, gas-treatment media, and replacement assumptions.
Utilities and operations Process steam, heat, electricity, water, labor, and maintenance.
Replacement and reliability Catalyst or component replacement, maintenance schedule, expected uptime, and availability assumptions.
Hydrogen product boundary Hydrogen cleanup and, if in scope, compression, storage, and delivery.
Project economics Financing, project lifetime, operating hours or capacity factor, feed price or gate fee, and other disclosed site assumptions.

Use a consistent lifecycle-cost method and disclose the assumptions behind the result. The US Department of Energy’s H2A analysis provides standardized methods and assumptions for assessing hydrogen production costs and comparing pathways; it does not remove the need to select and report assumptions that fit the project. Make sure all alternatives use the same plant capacity basis, operating schedule, product specification, financing assumptions, and cost boundary.

How should you interpret published project and cost figures?

Published figures can establish what a particular assessment or project examined, but they are not automatically a current commercial price or a design guarantee.

  • The IEA’s 2025 assessment covers more than 30 feedstock types. That figure describes the breadth of its feedstock assessment, not the number of commercial biogas-to-hydrogen systems.
  • The European Commission BIO-HYDROGEN project targeted a 6 kW hydrogen reforming system and described a biotrickling-filter prototype intended to treat 1–2 m³/h of biogas. These are project-development scale figures, not evidence of current catalog availability or a current commercial quotation. The publication date was not displayed in the project report information cited here.
  • Braga and coauthors’ 2013 study reported a hydrogen production cost of US$0.27/kWh and an eight-year payback under that study’s assumptions. This is a historical, case-specific result, not a current expected price.
  • The IEA’s 2025 assessment also describes approximately 45 billion cubic metres equivalent of global biomethane potential at or below prevailing wholesale natural-gas prices. That is a biomethane potential estimate, not a market estimate or cost benchmark for hydrogen systems.

What should you ask vendors to provide?

Give each vendor the same site brief so their proposals can be compared on a common basis. Include:

  • Location, raw-gas flow range, analyzed composition, contaminant results, and seasonal variation.
  • Hydrogen demand profile, required purity and pressure, expected annual uptime, and utility availability.
  • Emissions accounting boundary and whether compression, storage, and delivery are in scope.
  • A guaranteed performance envelope tied to your inputs, with a process flow diagram and mass and energy balance.
  • Cleaning media and replacement assumptions, maintenance schedule, and stated availability terms.
  • Capital and operating cost breakdown, warranty terms, and the assumptions behind each estimate.

Ask vendors to identify how their guarantees change if feed flow, composition, or contaminant levels move outside the analyzed range. This makes it easier to identify exclusions and compare the operating obligations behind superficially similar proposals.
