For U.S. shoppers, the safest beauty shopping app is the one that makes the seller, return rules, and support route clear before checkout—not one that simply has high ratings or a familiar name. Compare who sells the item, where it ships from, whether opened products can be returned, how refunds are issued, and whether the order must go back through the app where you bought it.
No retailer policy or marketplace rule proves that every individual listing is authentic. Treat sourcing and anti-counterfeit statements as the company’s stated policy, then check the specific seller and keep your purchase and any dispute on-platform.

What to compare before buying beauty products in an app
Start with the listing and the checkout channel. A product may appear in a retailer’s app but be sold by a brand, a third-party seller, or through a separate marketplace service. That distinction can change who handles delivery, returns, refunds, and disputes.
- Seller and fulfillment: Identify the named seller and whether the retailer itself or another party fulfills the order. Do not assume the app operator is the seller.
- Return eligibility: Check the deadline, proof-of-purchase requirements, condition rules for opened or gently used beauty products, and any final-sale exclusions.
- Return route: Confirm whether you can return by mail, at a store, or only through the marketplace used to place the order.
- Refund details: Look for the refund method, whether shipping is refundable, and any processing time or return fees.
- Help and escalation: Find out who to contact if an order is wrong, damaged, or suspected counterfeit, and whether the marketplace’s protections cover that seller and item.
The FTC advises marketplace shoppers to check the marketplace rules and the seller’s identity, contact details, item description, return terms, fees, and deadlines. How to assess authenticity without relying on ratings alone
Reviews and star ratings can help you spot patterns, but they are not proof that a beauty product is genuine. The FTC warns that ratings may be fake or misleading and recommends checking recent reviews from more than one source as well as the seller’s identity and contact information.
- Prefer a listing sold by the retailer or the brand when that option is available, and verify the seller name on the product page and at checkout.
- Be cautious if an expensive product is offered at a price far below comparable listings; the FTC says an unusually low price may indicate a fake.
- Read the product description carefully, including size, packaging, shade, and condition, and save the listing and receipt.
- Keep messages and payment within the marketplace’s system so its protections can apply. Use a safer payment method rather than paying a seller outside the platform.
Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit FAQ says, “Products offered for sale on Amazon must be authentic. The sale of counterfeit products is strictly prohibited.” That is Amazon’s policy statement, not independent confirmation that a particular beauty listing is authentic. Amazon also reported investing more than $1.2 billion and employing more than 15,000 people to address fraud and abuse, including counterfeits, in 2023; those are company-reported enforcement figures, not a measured counterfeit rate for shoppers. Sephora: comparatively clear options for eligible direct orders
Sephora’s current U.S. policy generally accepts new or gently used items within 30 days for a refund to the original payment method, subject to proof of purchase and return validation. Eligible Sephora.com orders have free store and prepaid-mail return options, but the mail-processing time and shipping-charge exception in the table matter if you need a prompt refund. Purchases made through pickup, delivery, TikTok Shop, or Sephora at Kohl’s may follow distinct procedures, so match the return instructions to the channel you used. Ulta: channel-specific returns and a stated no-resale policy
Ulta’s return instructions show why an order placed through a delivery marketplace should not be treated like a standard Ulta app or store purchase. DoorDash and Instacart orders have an in-store route and merchandise-credit refund, while TikTok Shop orders must go back through TikTok. Ulta also states that its policy does not allow resale of used, damaged, or expired products and that returned items not meeting its standards are properly disposed of. Amazon: a marketplace policy is not listing-level proof
Amazon states that counterfeit products are prohibited, but that does not establish the authenticity of a specific third-party beauty listing. The seller, listing details, return terms, and available marketplace protections still need to be checked individually. No comparable, independently measured counterfeit-rate figure is established here for Amazon, Sephora, and Ulta, so the policies do not support ranking these services by counterfeit incidence.

Which beauty app has the easiest returns?
There is no universal winner: “easy” depends on how you bought the item and what kind of refund you want. Sephora offers free in-store or prepaid-mail returns for eligible online orders and generally refunds the original payment method, while Ulta’s DoorDash and Instacart returns require an Ulta store visit and result in merchandise credit. Both retailers direct some marketplace orders back to the originating platform. Amazon’s applicable terms vary by listing and order.
Before you choose an app, ask yourself:
- Do I need to return opened or gently used makeup? Confirm the condition rule for this exact order.
- Can I reach a store, or do I need a mail return?
- Is a refund to my original payment method important, or would store credit work?
- Was the order placed directly with the retailer, through a delivery service, or through a social-shopping marketplace?
- Can I find a clear support and dispute route before paying?
If you suspect a beauty product is counterfeit
- Save evidence: Keep the order confirmation, receipt, product listing, seller name, packaging, and clear photos of the item and any differences from its description.
- Contact the seller and platform through the app: Follow the order’s stated return or problem-reporting route and keep communications on-platform.
- Watch the deadline: Follow the return and dispute dates shown in the order and marketplace rules; do not assume a general retailer policy overrides a channel-specific deadline.
- Escalate through the payment provider if appropriate: Use the applicable payment-provider process if the seller or platform does not resolve the issue, while keeping records of your contacts and submission dates.
The FTC’s marketplace guidance recommends checking who will help with a problem and what protections apply before buying. For an order from a marketplace, the platform may have a different role than the named seller, so contact details and the order’s support route are important.
