Choose a NOAA Weather Radio that supports SAME county or area alerts, has a tone alarm, and can run on batteries during an outage. Before hurricane season, program your location, test reception where you plan to keep it, and make sure you have the battery type and spares its manual specifies. No radio can guarantee reception at every address.

Which features matter for hurricane alerts?

Start with a receiver designed to receive NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) broadcasts. The National Weather Service (NWS) advises buyers to look for the NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards or Public Alert logo; it does not endorse one brand over another. The logos are useful screening signals, not a promise of reception in your home. NWS receiver guidance

  • SAME alert selection: Lets you program the counties or areas you want to receive alerts for.
  • Tone alarm: Can sound an alert when the radio receives a warning, including when you are not actively listening.
  • Battery operation: Keeps the radio usable when household power is unavailable. For a home unit, AC power with battery backup can be convenient; check the manual for battery format and runtime.
  • Alert controls: Some receivers allow selection of which alert types activate the alarm. Check the manual to see whether the settings suit your needs.
  • Antenna options: An external antenna jack may help address weak reception, but only if the radio supports one.
  • Accessibility connections: If needed, look for support for an external strobe light, bed shaker, or other notification device.

For broader emergency preparedness, CDC includes a battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA weather radio with USB ports in its emergency power guidance. Charging features do not, by themselves, establish that a radio receives NOAA broadcasts or supports SAME alerts.

What does SAME mean on a weather radio?

SAME stands for Specific Area Message Encoding. It lets you set a compatible radio to alert for selected counties or other areas instead of every alert carried by a transmitter. After buying the radio, find the official SAME code for your location and enter it as directed in the manual. The NWS explains how SAME works.

Leaton Hand Crank Emergency Radio, NOAA Weather Radio AM/FM,10000mAh
  • Massive 10000mAh Battery for Extended Emergency Power – Unlike standard models, this Emergency Weather Radio features a built-in 10000mAh rechargeable battery that provides backup power for your smartphone and essential devices during outages. The USB Output (5V/1A) supports emergency phone charging when grid power is unavailable. Ideal for hurricanes, winter storms, camping, RV travel, home emergencies, emergency kits, survival gear, and disaster supplies. Realistic Charging Expectations: The 10000mAh rating refers to the internal battery cell; actual output varies due to conversion loss and device efficiency. Expect approximately 1–1.5 charges for an iPhone 14.
  • PX6 Waterproof & Compact Design – Ready for Outdoor Use – Rated IPX6 water resistant, this emergency radio is protected against water spray and splashing, making it suitable for camping, fishing, hiking, hurricane preparedness, and outdoor use. It is designed for splash resistance only and is not intended for heavy rain, immersion, or underwater use. Measuring approximately 6.3"L x 3.5"W x 3.1"H and weighing about 1.1 lbs (500g), this compact weather radio easily fits backpacks, go-bags, vehicles, RVs, and emergency storage areas without adding bulk. Includes a built-in compass for outdoor navigation support.
  • 3-Mode Flashlight & Reading Lamp – Emergency Lighting Solution – This portable Emergency Radio includes a high-efficiency LED flashlight with three modes: High, Low, and SOS signaling for blackouts, nighttime emergencies, camping, and outdoor use. The built-in 1.3W reading lamp provides soft, wide-angle lighting for reading maps, checking emergency supplies, or navigating in the dark. Designed for camping gear, survival kits, hurricane preparedness, car emergency kits, and family emergency supplies, this weather radio provides dependable backup lighting when electricity is unavailable.
  • NOAA Weather Radio & AM/FM – Manual Tuning, No Automatic Alert – Stay informed with NOAA weather broadcasts and AM/FM reception: AM 520–1710kHz, FM 87–108MHz, NOAA 162.400–162.550MHz. Manual Tuning Required: extend the antenna, select NOAA mode, then slowly rotate the tuning knob until the clearest local NOAA station is received. This NOAA Weather Radio does NOT support SAME technology, automatic NOAA alerts, or location-based alerts; users must manually tune to and listen to NOAA broadcasts. Large controls make tuning easier for families and seniors.
  • 3 Charging Modes: Solar, Hand Crank & USB-C Input – Stay powered with USB-C Input, built-in solar panel, or hand crank generator when electricity is unavailable. About 1 minute of steady hand cranking provides 15–20 minutes of radio listening; actual runtime varies by use and cranking speed. The radio can be used while charging via USB-C, but charging may take longer. This Solar Radio and Hand Crank Radio supports hurricane supplies, camping essentials, outdoor adventures, RV trips, survival kits, and 72-hour emergency preparedness. Multiple charging methods keep your emergency radio ready for blackouts, storms, remote travel, and off-grid situations.

Without SAME, a radio may alert for the broader area covered by the transmitter, which can mean alerts for places outside your selected locality. Verify the programmed area and alert settings rather than assuming the radio is configured out of the box.

Should you choose a handheld or home radio?

Choose based on where you need to hear alerts and how you will power the receiver.

There is no supported model ranking here: NWS explicitly says it cannot recommend one receiver brand over another. Compare individual models by alerting, power, reception options, intended location, accessibility, and recognized logos rather than assuming that a feature-rich radio will work better at your address.

How can you tell whether a radio will get reception where you live?

Check local NWS coverage, then test the receiver in the place you intend to keep it. Reception can change with terrain, buildings, room location, distance from a transmitter, and antenna quality. The typical broadcast range of a full-power NWS transmitter is approximately 40 miles over level terrain, according to the NWS receiver FAQ; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed range for a particular home.

How to set up and check your radio before hurricane season

  1. Read the manual. Confirm the radio’s power options, battery type, alert controls, and programming steps.
  2. Program your area. Enter the correct SAME county or area code, then review any selectable alert settings.
  3. Choose a useful location. Place the radio where you can hear its alarm and where reception is adequate; test it there rather than relying on a signal check elsewhere in the home.
  4. Test the controls and power plan. Learn how to silence or acknowledge an alert, and confirm the radio operates on its battery supply. Keep spare batteries in the format specified by the manual.
  5. Keep it accessible. NOAA advises keeping a battery-operated radio nearby during a hurricane, along with a flashlight or camping lantern. NOAA hurricane safety guidance

Will a weather radio work when the power is out?

A battery-powered radio can operate without household electricity if its batteries are available and charged or fresh. Reception still depends on local signal conditions, and a radio cannot guarantee uninterrupted alerts. Keep it as one part of your emergency information plan, alongside other available alert channels, and follow local emergency managers’ instructions and evacuation orders.
