Choose your bar and plates as one loading system: first confirm the bar fits your rack, then match the plate bore and total plate thickness to the sleeves, and finally pick plate material and weight increments for how you train. For a home setup built around squats, bench presses and deadlifts, a 20 kg, 29 mm powerlifting bar is one option; a multipurpose bar may suit a broader mix of lifts. Neither is a universal best choice.
1. Check that the bar fits your rack
Do not assume a bar fits because it is described as an Olympic bar or because its overall length looks right. Check the rack manufacturer’s requirements and compare them with the specific bar’s dimensions.
- Overall length: The bar must fit the space and the way you use the rack.
- Rackable span: Confirm that the distance between the collars or other relevant bar features lets the shaft sit securely in your J-cups.
- J-cup compatibility: Verify the bar’s shaft and rack-contact area work with your rack’s cups.
- Loadable sleeve length: This determines how much plate width can fit on each end, including room for collars.
For a dimensioned example, Eleiko’s Rack Bar product sheet lists an overall length of 2200 mm (86.61 in), a 29 mm shaft and 415 mm (16.34 in) of loadable sleeve length. Eleiko says it is “Designed for the unique requirements of strength rooms and free weight areas where bars are used with benches and racks to meet a variety of training needs.” That is manufacturer copy, not evidence that it fits every rack. See Eleiko’s Rack Bar product sheet, then check your rack’s measurements before buying.

2. Choose a bar design for your lifts
Bar diameter, knurling and center knurl affect the feel and intended use. The product specifications below are examples from manufacturers, not an independent ranking or proof that one bar is better for every lifter.
#1 Best Overall

| Example bar | Published specifications | What the features may suit |
|---|---|---|
| Rogue 20 kg Ohio Power Bar | 29 mm shaft; 50 mm sleeves; 16.875 in loadable sleeve length; power knurl and center knurl | A lifter prioritizing powerlifting-style squats, bench presses and deadlifts may prefer its powerlifting-focused knurl and center knurl. Check the Rogue product listing. |
| Rogue B&R Bar 2.0 | 20 kg; 29 mm shaft; 16.25 in loadable sleeve length; center knurl; described as multipurpose | A lifter wanting one bar for a wider movement mix may consider a multipurpose design. Check the Rogue product listing. |
Both examples have a 29 mm shaft, so diameter alone does not distinguish them. Compare the knurling, intended use and usable sleeve length, and verify the full dimensions against your rack and plates.
3. Match plate bores and sleeve space
Check the actual sleeve diameter and plate centre-hole dimensions for the products you plan to pair. “Olympic” is useful shorthand, but it is not a substitute for verifying a specific plate and bar. As one example, Eleiko lists a 50.5 mm centre hole with a stated tolerance of ±0.5% for its IWF training plate. Its listing gives a 450 mm diameter and thicknesses of 50 mm for 20 kg plates and 58 mm for 25 kg plates. See Eleiko’s IWF Weightlifting Training Plate listing.

- STEEL FLOATING HUB - Features a durable steel floating hub for reliable performance, a secure fit on Olympic barbells, and smooth plate loading and unloading. Designed for long-lasting durability through repeated home gym training, including deadlifts, squats, Olympic lifts, and other strength-building exercises.

These bumper plates help protect floors, barbells, and equipment to deliver a forgiving and versatile training experience for lifters of all skill levels.
- FITS 2-INCH OLYMPIC BARBELLS - Designed with a 2-inch center hole to fit all standard Olympic barbell sleeves for smooth loading and unloading during weightlifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding, and full-body strength training workouts.
- EASY WEIGHT IDENTIFICATION - Bumper plates feature color coded weight markers for quick weight identification for a professional gym-style appearance.
Next, calculate whether the plates you want will fit along each sleeve. Add the thicknesses of the plates for your heaviest planned load, and leave room for collars. Thickness varies by plate type and weight, so do not estimate sleeve capacity from the bar’s total length.

4. Choose plate material for your training and space
Metal plates are generally the compact option for ordinary strength training; bumper plates are designed for situations where a loaded bar may be dropped. The right choice depends on your lifting, noise and floor setup, not just the plate label.
- Iron or steel: Consider metal plates when compact loading matters and your training does not require drop-oriented plates.
- Rubber or urethane bumpers: Consider these when your training includes dropping a loaded bar. Check the particular plate’s thickness and use guidance.
- Floor and impact: A bumper plate does not guarantee that every floor or plate will withstand every drop. Assess your floor and training area separately.
Rogue’s overview distinguishes bumper, metal and competition plates; use it as a category guide, then verify the specifications of the plates you intend to buy. Read Rogue’s weightlifting-plate overview.

- EASY WEIGHT IDENTIFICATION - Raised weight markings make plate sizes easier to recognize when changing loads between sets and exercises.

5. Buy weight increments that fit your progression
Choose the total weight and whether to buy kilograms or pounds based on your actual lifts and how you plan to progress. Smaller change plates let you make finer increases, but the useful set depends on your loading plan. Confirm that change plates fit the selected sleeves, just as you would with full-size plates. Eleiko publishes an IWF Change Plate product sheet; consult the specifications for any change plates you are considering.
6. Treat competition requirements as a separate case
Home-gym equipment does not automatically need to meet a competition rulebook. The USPA’s January 15, 2024 technical rules require calibrated bars and steel plates for competitions governed by that federation and specify a 50–53 mm sleeve-diameter range. Those rules apply to USPA competition, not every home rack or every powerlifting federation. If you compete, check the current rulebook for your actual federation and division before purchasing. Read the USPA technical rules.
