Choose an FCNR(B) bank by matching its written terms to the currency you want at maturity, the period you can leave the money invested, and how you will fund and access the deposit. Compare rates only for the same currency and tenor, and check early-closure terms before booking. Also confirm the deposit’s insurance treatment: DICGC’s general ₹5 lakh limit has an exclusion for deposits received outside India, so do not assume a particular FCNR(B) deposit is covered.
Start with the currency you want back at maturity
An FCNR(B) is a foreign-currency term deposit. The denomination you choose determines the currency in which the principal and interest are due at maturity; it is not the same as an NRE deposit, which is rupee-denominated. Begin by deciding how you expect to use the proceeds. If you expect to spend them in a particular foreign currency, receiving that currency may avoid a conversion at maturity. If you expect to use the money in India, ask the bank how it handles payment or conversion and what charges or exchange-rate terms apply.
Availability differs by bank. For example, Federal Bank’s product page lists USD, GBP, EUR, JPY, AUD, CHF, CAD, SGD, NZD and HKD; check its current FCNR(B) terms for actual availability and requirements. Do not assume every bank accepts every currency.
Compare rates only on matching terms
A rate comparison is useful only when the offers line up. For each bank, record the currency, exact tenor, deposit amount band, interest convention, whether the quote is for a fresh deposit or renewal, and the rate-card effective date. A higher number for a different currency or maturity is not necessarily a better offer.

RBI ceilings are regulatory limits, not market offers or a promise that a bank will pay a particular rate. The RBI’s FCNR(B) Directions do not allow an accepted or renewed deposit to run for more than five years. The RBI circular index records standard ceiling spreads of overnight ARR plus 250 basis points for one year to under three years, and ARR plus 350 basis points for three to five years. A temporary increase to 400 and 500 basis points, respectively, applied only through March 31, 2025; it has expired and is not current rate guidance. See the RBI circular for that historical relaxation.
Rates change, and no date-matched comparison across all banks and currencies establishes a current best bank. Use each bank’s current rate card rather than a historical example: Bank of India, for instance, identifies a rate card effective July 2, 2026 on its official deposit-rate page. That is a dated, bank-specific example, not a market-wide rate or ranking.

Check how interest is calculated and paid
Ask whether interest is paid out periodically or compounded, how the bank treats the final stub period, and how the quoted rate translates into maturity proceeds. RBI directions and bank descriptions specify a 360-day basis and 180-day intervals for FCNR(B) interest, but confirm the selected bank’s current convention in its terms. Federal Bank, for example, says it calculates interest on a 360-day year, pays at 180-day intervals, and calculates the remaining period using actual days on its product page.

Read early-withdrawal terms before locking in
Early access can change the return substantially. The RBI Directions say scheduled commercial banks must permit premature withdrawal on the depositor’s request, but no interest is payable if withdrawal occurs before the scheme’s minimum stipulated period. Banks must disclose penalty components when accepting the deposit and may, at their discretion, levy a penalty to recover swap costs. Converting an FCNR(B) deposit to NRE before maturity is also subject to premature-withdrawal penalties under the Directions.
Ask the bank for the full early-closure policy in writing before booking. It should state the minimum period for any interest, the rate used to calculate interest on early closure, any penalty, and whether swap-cost recovery may apply. For a dated bank-specific illustration, Bank of India’s rate page says a 1% penalty applies after 12 months for premature withdrawal; that figure is not a universal rule and should not be applied to other banks or current offers without checking their terms.
Check the practical requirements, not just the headline rate
A bank’s process may determine whether an offer is workable from your country and within your timetable. Ask the bank to confirm these points for your circumstances:

- Servicing: whether you can open, monitor and instruct the deposit online from your country, and how to handle instructions if access fails.
- Loan facilities: whether the bank offers a loan against the deposit, and the applicable eligibility, pricing, limits and paperwork. Federal Bank advertises loan facilities against FCNR deposits, but availability and conditions should be confirmed directly with the bank.
- Repatriation: how principal and interest are paid or transferred at maturity, what paperwork is required, and whether transfer charges or limits apply. Federal Bank states that both are freely repatriable for its product; verify the conditions for your own account and transaction.
Plan maturity, renewal and a possible return to India
Before opening the deposit, choose what should happen at maturity: payout, renewal, or another instruction. Confirm whether renewal is automatic, how to cancel or change an instruction, what happens if the deposit is left overdue, and which rate would apply to any renewal. RBI permits banks to renew overdue FCNR(B) deposits only at their discretion and under stated conditions, so do not treat an overdue balance as automatically renewed on the terms you expect.

RBI directions allow scheduled commercial banks, at their discretion and subject to conditions, to continue qualifying FCNR(B) deposits to maturity at the contracted rate. Also ask about the bank’s process for moving funds afterward, including any conversion to an RFC or resident rupee deposit, and obtain the applicable terms in writing.

Ask specifically about DICGC insurance
DICGC states that the maximum insurance is ₹5,00,000 for principal and interest per depositor, per insured bank, aggregated across branches when held in the same right and capacity. Its guide to deposit insurance also lists “any amount due on account of any deposit received outside India” among exclusions. Because the exclusion refers to how a deposit is received, do not assume either that every FCNR(B) deposit is insured or that every one is excluded. Ask the bank how the specific deposit and funding route are treated, and seek clarification from DICGC if the answer is unclear.
Keep tax questions separate from product marketing
Tax treatment depends on your residence status, the applicable Indian rules and potentially the law where you are tax-resident. A bank’s broad product-page statement is not a personal tax determination. If your tax residence or a planned move to India could affect the result, get advice specific to your circumstances before choosing a currency or maturity plan.
Quick Recap
A practical bank-comparison checklist
- Write down the currency you want at maturity and how you expect to use the proceeds.
- Choose a tenor you can realistically hold, then collect current rate cards for the same currency, tenor and amount band.
- Compare the interest convention and confirm whether each quote is for a fresh deposit or renewal, using rate cards effective on the same date where possible.
- Obtain written early-closure, penalty, swap-cost, overdue-renewal and maturity-payment terms.
- Confirm eligibility, KYC, minimum, funding route, transfer charges, online servicing, repatriation and any loan facility directly with each bank.
- Ask how DICGC’s foreign-deposit exclusion applies to the specific deposit and funding route.
- Get individualized tax advice if residence or a return to India makes the consequences uncertain.
