Use the Virginia Department of Elections’ Citizen Portal to check whether you are registered and find your polling place. For statewide general and primary elections, the state’s separate Polling Place and Ballot Information Lookup can also show election-specific details such as early-voting locations and what is on the ballot.

How do I check whether I’m registered to vote in Virginia?

  1. Open the official Virginia Citizen Portal.
  2. Choose the registration-status lookup and enter the identifying information requested. The Department’s FAQ lists your name, date of birth, last four digits of your Social Security number, and locality. Portal pages state that information must be entered in English.
  3. Review the result and confirm that the voter details shown are yours. The portal also supports voter-record updates and displays information such as your election district, absentee ballot status, and voting history.

If the portal does not find your record, that alone does not prove you are unregistered. The Department advises voters who believe they are registered but cannot find their record online to contact their local general registrar.

Where do I go to vote on Election Day?

Registered voters can use the Citizen Portal to check their polling place for an upcoming election, including a special election. For statewide general and primary elections, the Department’s Polling Place and Ballot Information Lookup is another option. Enter your full residence address, including ZIP code, to see the Election Day polling location and available information for that election.

Which Virginia lookup should I use?

Lookup route Best for Availability and details
Citizen Portal Checking registration status, voter information, and an assigned polling place. Year-round voter-record route; registered voters can use it for upcoming elections, including special elections.
Polling Place and Ballot Information Lookup Finding election-specific voting information for a statewide general or primary election. Available during statewide general and primary elections. Depending on the election, it can show Election Day location, early-voting sites, dates and hours, ballot-dropoff options, and what is on the ballot.
Local general registrar Resolving an unclear or missing record, or asking about locality-specific special-election details. Use the state’s contact lookup to find the office for your city or county.

What if my name or address is outdated?

The Department lists several ways to update voter information: use the online portal, notify the Department through a DMV address change, submit a voter registration application, or send a letter to your local registrar. The Department says an application must be postmarked at least 11 days before the next primary or general election. Because deadlines depend on the election, check the current date and requirements with the Department or your registrar before submitting an update. If you do not receive an acknowledgement within 30 days after mailing an application, contact the local office.

What should I do if there is a problem at the polling place?

  • If officials cannot find your name in the pollbook or cannot confirm your eligibility, ask about casting a provisional ballot. It records your vote while eligibility is resolved.
  • If you are told you are at the wrong polling place, check the location associated with your registration address using the official polling-place lookup or Citizen Portal.
  • For unresolved eligibility or voter-record questions, contact your local general registrar.

When are Virginia Election Day polls open?

Virginia Election Day polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Anyone in line at 7:00 p.m. will be allowed to vote. Confirm your assigned location before Election Day, since the correct polling place is tied to your registration address.

What is the next Virginia general election date?

A Virginia Department of Elections release dated May 8, 2026, gives November 3, 2026, as the date of the 2026 General Election and directs registered voters to the Citizen Portal to check voter information, including polling location. Election dates and registration deadlines can change or depend on the election, so verify current details on the Department’s Election and Voter FAQ and official election pages.
