Check your phone’s built-in battery-health screen or diagnostic first, then estimate everyday endurance by tracking charge loss during a typical routine. Battery health is a condition or remaining-capacity estimate; it does not tell you how many hours the phone will last. Runtime also depends on what you do, screen settings, signal, temperature, background activity, and software.
How do I check my phone battery health?
Start with the manufacturer’s own settings or diagnostic. Available details and menu labels depend on the model and software version, and different brands do not report battery condition in the same way.
iPhone
On iPhone 15 models and later running iOS 17.4 or later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says this screen can show maximum capacity, cycle count, manufacture date, first-use date, and whether it recommends replacement. On iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. The information and labels can vary by model and iOS version. See Apple’s battery and performance guidance.
Apple’s design targets are 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles for iPhone 14 models and earlier, and after 1,000 complete cycles for iPhone 15 models and later, under ideal conditions. These are design targets, not a universal replacement threshold; Apple notes that actual capacity depends on device use and charging. A complete cycle is cumulative use equal to 100% of capacity, not necessarily one uninterrupted drain from full to empty.

Samsung Galaxy
Open the Samsung Members app and go to Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery status. Depending on the app version and device, the route may begin at Support > Get Started, followed by diagnostics and Battery status. Samsung says menus can vary by model and software version. Its diagnostic may report Normal, Weak, or Bad; these categories are not a remaining-capacity percentage. Google Pixel
On Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, Google documents Settings > Battery > Battery Diagnostics. The diagnostic and information shown may differ from a battery-capacity percentage on another platform. Google also provides an overnight drain check; see Pixel battery troubleshooting.

How can I tell if my phone battery is bad?
No single symptom proves that the battery itself has deteriorated. Persistent unusually short runtime, unexpected shutdowns, or a manufacturer diagnostic warning are reasons to investigate. First check the phone’s battery-usage screen for apps or system activity that may explain a recent change. Weak cellular signal, heavy display use, navigation, gaming, video, or activity after an update can increase drain without showing that the battery’s retained capacity has changed.
Google notes that drain can be somewhat higher after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes software. If the change persists, update the phone and review battery usage before treating one poor result as proof of battery failure.

For Pixel, Google’s overnight procedure is specific: start at 100%, close open apps, disconnect power, and leave the phone idle as usual overnight. Google describes less than 10% overnight drain as expected for that test; more than 10% is a prompt to inspect Battery usage for app or system contributors. This is a Pixel troubleshooting rule, not a universal standard or a battery-health percentage. Do not apply the 10% figure to other brands.
How long should my phone battery last in real life?
There is no dependable number of hours that applies to every phone or routine. Estimate your own endurance by observing charge loss during a representative period, then repeating the observation under similar conditions. This is a personal estimate, not a lab benchmark.

- Choose a representative period. Use a typical day or a consistent block of several hours. Record the starting and ending battery percentages, elapsed time, and screen-on time.
- Note conditions that affect drain. Record brightness, Wi-Fi or cellular use and signal quality, navigation, video, gaming, camera use, background apps, temperature, and whether the phone recently updated.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. A second similar day helps distinguish a pattern from an unusual workload or signal problem. For a cleaner idle check on supported Pixels, use Google’s overnight procedure above; do not use its threshold as a rule for other phones.
- Compare like with like. Charge loss per hour is useful only when periods and routines are similar. A straight-line projection from part of a charge is rough: use changes over time, and the displayed percentage is rounded or estimated.
- Check battery usage if the result changes suddenly. Look for apps or components consuming power before concluding that the battery’s capacity has fallen.
For a comparison between two phones, keep workload and conditions as close as possible and report the exact models, software versions, test duration, screen-on time, and network conditions. Battery capacity in mAh alone does not predict hours: displays, chipsets, radios, software, and workloads differ. A battery-health percentage cannot be reliably translated into a cross-platform runtime figure.

If frequent recharging or unexpected shutdowns persist, check the manufacturer’s diagnostic and contact the appropriate support provider. Samsung advises seeking local support-center advice after a Bad result. Apple says frequent recharging may be a reason to service a built-in battery and directs users to Apple or an authorized service provider; see Apple’s battery service guidance.

Apple’s maximum-capacity reading, Samsung’s Normal/Weak/Bad categories, and Google’s Pixel diagnostics answer different questions. Treat them as useful indicators, not interchangeable measurements or guaranteed runtime forecasts. Avoid relying on a generic battery app as a definitive capacity test, and identify the exact phone before considering model-specific replacement parts.
