You can check which Wi-Fi network a Chromecast uses, but Google’s support instructions do not document a numerical signal-strength reading or a built-in Chromecast speed test. To investigate buffering, check the connected network, then run a speed test on another device in the TV’s room and compare it with a test near the router. That measures the other device—not the Chromecast—but can help reveal a coverage problem.
Check which Wi-Fi network your Chromecast is using
The route depends on the device generation. Use the TV’s settings for Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer; use the Google Home app for older Chromecast models. Google’s instructions show how to inspect the connection, but do not document a numeric Wi-Fi signal-strength value on these screens.
Chromecast with Google TV HD or 4K
- On the TV, open the account/settings area.
- Select All settings → Network and Internet.
- Inspect the displayed network connection.
Google TV Streamer
- Open All settings → Network and Internet.
- Inspect the network connection.
Older Chromecast models
- Open Google Home and select the Chromecast device tile.
- Open Settings → Device information → Wi-Fi.
- Check the network shown. Wording can vary by Google Home app version.
These routes identify the connected network; they are not a documented signal meter or throughput test. See Google’s Chromecast connection troubleshooting.

Run a reputable speed test on a phone or computer connected to the same home Wi-Fi, ideally near the TV. The result is that test device’s internet throughput at its location. It does not directly measure the Chromecast’s Wi-Fi signal or guarantee the speed available to the Chromecast.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Run the test near the TV and note download speed, upload speed, and latency or ping if shown.
- Run the same test near the router, close in time to the first test.
- Compare the results. A substantial drop near the TV can point to weaker coverage or interference in that location.
Results can differ with the test device, time, network load, and test server. The official guidance cited here establishes no Mbps threshold that guarantees Chromecast playback quality.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it can tell you | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Chromecast or Google Home network settings | Which Wi-Fi network the Chromecast is connected to. | Google’s cited instructions do not establish a numeric RSSI or throughput reading. |
| Phone or computer speed test on the same Wi-Fi | Internet throughput available to that device where the test is run. | It is not a direct Chromecast speed or signal reading. |
| Test near the router and near the TV | Whether performance appears to vary by location. | Results vary with device, time, network load, and server. |
| Compatible Ethernet adapter | Whether a wired connection changes the streaming device’s connection behavior. | Compatibility depends on the Chromecast model; Ethernet does not measure Wi-Fi. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi | May improve coverage when weak Wi-Fi affects multiple areas or the TV room. | It is a coverage option, not a speed-test tool. |
Troubleshoot buffering or an offline Chromecast
1. Confirm the network
Check the Chromecast’s connected network using the route above. If you are casting or using Google Home discovery, make sure your phone is on the intended home network too.

2. Check whether other devices can get online
Try a phone, tablet, or computer on the Wi-Fi. If those devices also cannot connect or reach the internet, investigate the router or internet service before assuming the Chromecast is at fault. Google includes other-device checks in its Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting.
3. Improve the Chromecast’s location
Move the Chromecast and router closer together if practical. Google’s setup guidance suggests placing the streaming device within 10–15 feet of the router when needed; its connection guidance recommends keeping the router within about 20 feet where practical. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guarantees of adequate performance. Move the Chromecast away from the TV, wires, cables, and nearby devices that may contribute to interference.

- Get fast streaming, and enjoy a crystal clear picture up to 4K and brighter colors with HDR

- Press the Google Assistant button on the remote and use voice search to find specific shows, youtube tv streaming, or search by mood, genre, actress, and more; control the volume, switch inputs, play music, and get answers, hands-free
- Chromecast is easy to install and compatible with almost any TV that has an HDMI port; to get started, just plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming
4. Try the appropriate Wi-Fi band
If the router offers both bands, try 5 GHz on a Chromecast model that supports it. First-generation Chromecast supports 2.4 GHz only, so a 5 GHz network will not appear during its setup. Google also states that support for first-generation Chromecast has ended; see its Wi-Fi connection guidance.
5. Restart and update network equipment
Restart the Chromecast and router or modem, and check whether the router has a firmware update available. Google lists these as connection troubleshooting steps.

6. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
Where supported, connect the Chromecast using a compatible, separately sold Ethernet adapter. If behavior improves on a wired connection, that is evidence the Wi-Fi link or coverage may be involved; it is not a Wi-Fi signal measurement. Google notes: “Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV both support Ethernet, but don’t have an Ethernet port.” Check adapter compatibility for your model before buying. A mesh system is worth considering only if coverage is weak across the home or in the TV’s room. Google’s connection guidance covers Ethernet and mesh options.
7. If setup fails, check network restrictions
For setup problems rather than ordinary playback, check whether the router uses AP or client isolation. Networks requiring a captive-portal login—often found in hotels, schools, dormitories, or businesses—are not supported for Google streaming-device setup. Google’s Android setup guidance also notes that the first-generation Chromecast’s included HDMI extender can help position that model nearer the router.
