Ubuntu does not maintain one universal, system-wide codec list that every application shares. To check media support accurately, first decide what you are asking: which codec is inside one file, which codecs a particular FFmpeg build can handle, or which codec-related packages are installed. Those are different checks with different results.

Use Files → Properties → Audio/Video (or Video) to identify the codec used by one media file. Run ffmpeg -codecs to list codecs supported by the installed FFmpeg build, and ffmpeg -formats to list container formats. Use dpkg -l '*<search_term>*' to search installed package names; entries marked ii are installed. None of these methods alone proves that every Ubuntu application can decode every format.

Choose the check that matches your question

The phrase “installed codecs” can refer to three layers of Ubuntu’s multimedia stack. A file has its own audio and video streams, an application such as FFmpeg has a build-specific capability set, and Ubuntu’s package database records software packages. Confusing those layers is the most common reason codec troubleshooting goes in the wrong direction.

Method What it shows Scope and limitation
Files → Properties Codec metadata for one audio or video file Specific to that file; it does not inventory decoders installed on the computer.
ffmpeg -codecs Codecs recognized by the installed FFmpeg executable Applies only to that FFmpeg build and its enabled components, not automatically to other applications.
ffmpeg -formats Container formats supported by FFmpeg A container is the file wrapper, not the audio or video codec inside it.
dpkg -l '*<search_term>*' Package names matching your search and their installation state Depends on the search term and package naming; package matches are not a complete capability report.

Start with the file-properties method when a single video will not play. Use the FFmpeg commands when you are working specifically with FFmpeg. Search the package database when you need to verify whether a particular package family is installed. For a broad diagnosis, use the methods in that order rather than treating one output as a complete inventory.

Identify the codec inside one media file

If your question is “What codec does this video use?” Ubuntu’s graphical file manager can show the metadata attached to that particular file. This is the quickest check and does not require you to know a package name or run a command.

Steps in Files

  1. Open Files from the Ubuntu applications menu or dock.
  2. Browse to the audio or video file you want to examine.
  3. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  4. Open the Audio/Video tab. On some files or Ubuntu versions, the tab is labeled Video.
  5. Read the listed video codec and, when present, the audio codec.

The displayed values describe the streams associated with that file. A movie can therefore show one codec for its picture and another for its sound. If only one stream is listed, the file may contain no second stream, or the file manager may not have enough metadata to identify it.

What this result does—and does not—tell you

File properties answer what is encoded in this file. They do not answer which decoders are installed on Ubuntu. Seeing a codec name in the properties window does not prove that every player on the system supports it, and failing to see a name does not prove that the codec is absent. The file manager may simply lack metadata for that file.

Use this check to establish the starting fact in a playback investigation: the exact audio and video formats that the player must decode. Record both names before changing software or repositories. If the file plays in one application but not another, that difference points to application support rather than a universal system condition.

When the properties tab is unavailable or incomplete

Some files do not expose all stream details to the desktop property dialog. In that case, do not convert the missing field into a claim that the codec is uninstalled. Move to an application-specific inspection method, such as the FFmpeg check below, or test the file with another player. The Ubuntu documentation also identifies damaged files, problems in the playback application, and errors made when the file was created as possible causes of playback failure.

Ubuntu’s explanation of codecs describes one as “a little piece of software that knows how to take the video and display it on the screen.” The practical implication is that the codec named by a file is only one part of the playback chain: the file must be readable, the player must understand the container and streams, and the required decoder must be available to that player.

List codecs supported by your FFmpeg build

FFmpeg provides a capability list for FFmpeg itself. It is the right tool when your workflow uses FFmpeg for playback, conversion, probing, or automation and you need to know what that installed executable recognizes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the codec list

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Run ffmpeg -codecs.
  3. Read the command’s output to see the codecs exposed by that FFmpeg installation.

If the shell reports that ffmpeg cannot be found, FFmpeg is not available through your current command path. The material available for Ubuntu varies by release and does not establish one package name that is correct for every codec and every Ubuntu version, so check the enabled repositories and the package details for your release rather than copying an old package command from an unrelated guide.

Understand the scope of the output

The list belongs to the FFmpeg executable you ran. Different builds can be compiled with different libraries, plugins, or licensing choices, so the output can vary between computers. It is not a universal list of codecs installed for GNOME applications, browser playback, or every other media program.

A codec appearing in this list means FFmpeg reports support for it in that build. It does not guarantee that a particular file is valid, that the file’s container is supported, or that another application uses the same multimedia stack. Conversely, a player can support a format through its own libraries even when that format is not represented by your FFmpeg build.

Check containers separately

Run ffmpeg -formats when you need to know which container formats the build can read or write. Containers are wrappers such as the structure that stores one or more audio and video streams; codecs are the compression and decompression methods used by those streams. A supported container does not imply that every codec commonly stored inside it is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, discovering that FFmpeg lists a container format answers a different question from discovering that it lists the video codec named in a file’s properties. Check both when a conversion fails: one result concerns the wrapper, the other concerns the encoded streams. Keep the two outputs separate in notes or troubleshooting tickets so that a container result is not reported as a codec result.

Use the result for an FFmpeg-specific decision

If an FFmpeg command fails, compare the file’s codec and container information with the two FFmpeg lists. A mismatch can explain why that FFmpeg build cannot process the file. However, the lists still do not diagnose file damage or every possible application error. If another player opens the same file, the problem may be limited to the FFmpeg build or to the command being used rather than to Ubuntu as a whole.

Inspect installed packages with dpkg

Ubuntu’s package database can show whether matching software packages are installed. This is useful when you have a package family or search term in mind, but it is not a decoder inventory. Codec support can be supplied by libraries or plugins, and applications can use different multimedia stacks.

Run a package-name search

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Choose a search term related to the package family you are checking.
  3. Run dpkg -l '*<search_term>*', replacing <search_term> with that term.
  4. Inspect the status column for each matching package.

The wildcard is quoted so the package database receives the pattern instead of your shell trying to expand it against files in the current directory. Replace the placeholder with one search term at a time and repeat the check for other package families when necessary.

Read the installation status

Ubuntu’s package guidance identifies ii as the marker for an installed package. A matching name without the ii status is not evidence that the package is currently installed. Read the complete status row rather than relying only on a package name returned by the search.

A package search can miss support for several reasons. The capability may be provided by a library whose name does not contain your chosen term, by a plugin managed by another application, or by a package whose name follows a different convention. The search can also return a package that is installed but unrelated to the specific stream or container you are trying to play.

Why package results cannot replace capability tests

Package installation and application capability are related but distinct. A package can be present while a player is configured not to use it. An application can bundle or load its own multimedia components without a package name that looks like a codec. For that reason, use dpkg to verify package state, then use the relevant application’s capability list or a real file test to determine whether the desired media works.

Understand codecs, containers, and applications as separate layers

A reliable diagnosis keeps three questions separate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What is in the file? The Files property dialog identifies the codec metadata for that file.
  • What can this application handle? ffmpeg -codecs and ffmpeg -formats describe the installed FFmpeg build, not every program on Ubuntu.
  • What software is installed? dpkg -l reports package names and status, subject to the search pattern and package layout.

These layers explain why a package search can look healthy while playback fails, or why one application plays a file while another refuses it. The player may use a different stack, the file may be damaged, or the container and stream combination may not be supported even when one component is.

Troubleshoot a file that will not play

A playback error is not proof that a codec is missing from the entire computer. Ubuntu lists several other possibilities, including file damage, a problem in the playback application, and an error introduced when the file was created.

Use an evidence-first sequence

  1. Identify the file’s streams. Use Files → Properties → Audio/Video or Video and note the video and audio codec names shown.
  2. Check the container if FFmpeg is part of your workflow. Run ffmpeg -formats and compare the file’s container requirement with that build’s list.
  3. Check FFmpeg’s codec capability when relevant. Run ffmpeg -codecs and compare the reported list with the file’s codecs.
  4. Try another player. Ubuntu suggests VLC as a player that supports many formats. A successful test there indicates that the original application may be the limiting layer; it does not prove that every codec is installed system-wide.
  5. Consider file integrity and creation errors. If multiple players fail, the file itself may be damaged or may have been produced incorrectly. Obtain a fresh copy or recreate the file when possible.
  6. Convert the file if the receiving application requires another format. Conversion is a workaround for an application or compatibility boundary; it is not evidence that a codec is absent from Ubuntu.

Interpret the outcomes

Observation Most useful interpretation Next check
The properties dialog names codecs, but one player fails. The file contains identifiable streams; the issue may be player support, configuration, or a player-specific multimedia stack. Try another player and check the relevant application’s capabilities.
FFmpeg lists the codec but cannot process the file. Recognition by the build does not guarantee a valid file or compatible container. Check the container, file integrity, and the exact FFmpeg operation.
A package search finds an installed match, but playback fails. Package presence does not prove that the player loads or uses the required component. Use the file-properties and application-specific checks.
No codec appears in the file properties. Metadata may be incomplete; absence from the dialog is not proof of absence from Ubuntu. Inspect with the application used for the workflow or test another player.
Every player fails. Missing support is possible, but corruption or an error during file creation is also plausible. Check the file source, obtain a clean copy, or convert a known-good source.

Installing missing support: release and repository cautions

Codec packages are not interchangeable across all Ubuntu releases. Package names, enabled components, and application stacks change, and the available material does not establish one current package name that covers every codec. Before installing anything, identify your Ubuntu release, inspect the repositories enabled on that computer, and read the package details offered for that release.

Do not copy historic package lists from old community examples and assume they are current. An old name may have been renamed, replaced, or tied to a release that is no longer supported. First establish whether the problem is actually a missing package by completing the file, FFmpeg, and playback checks above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you add a third-party repository, Ubuntu warns that such repositories are not checked by Ubuntu members for security or reliability. Add only sources you trust and understand. The official guidance is available at Ubuntu’s Add software repositories documentation. A repository change should be a deliberate decision, not an automatic response to a single playback error.

A repeatable checklist for codec investigations

Use this compact workflow whenever you need to document codec support on an Ubuntu computer:

  1. Define the scope. State whether you need the codec in one file, FFmpeg’s capabilities, or package installation status.
  2. Inspect the file. In Files, open the file’s Properties and record the Audio/Video or Video tab values.
  3. Separate container from codec. Treat the container as a distinct requirement and do not substitute one for the other.
  4. Check FFmpeg only when FFmpeg is involved. Run ffmpeg -codecs for codecs and ffmpeg -formats for containers.
  5. Search packages deliberately. Run dpkg -l '*<search_term>*' for the package family you actually need and look for the ii status.
  6. Test the application. A package or capability list does not replace opening the file in the application that matters.
  7. Investigate non-codec causes. Check for file damage, player problems, and errors made during file creation before changing repositories.
  8. Record version and context. Note the Ubuntu release, the application, the FFmpeg build when applicable, and the file’s container and stream codecs so another person can reproduce the diagnosis.
