The quickest way to identify your Mac’s processor is built into macOS: click the Apple menu , choose About This Mac, and read the field labeled Chip. A value such as an Apple M-series name means the Mac uses Apple silicon. If the window instead says Processor and names an Intel processor, the Mac is Intel-based.
On newer macOS releases with the redesigned settings interface, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > About and look for Chip or Processor. You do not need an app, accessory, repair utility, or replacement computer to perform this check.
Use About This Mac for the fastest check
About This Mac gives you the processor identity in a few clicks. The wording of the field is the important clue:

- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Select About This Mac.
- Find the line labeled Chip.
- Read the value beside it. That is the Apple silicon chip installed in the Mac.
- If the line is labeled Processor instead, the Mac is Intel-based rather than Apple silicon.
Apple’s support wording makes the distinction explicit: “A Mac with an Intel processor is not a Mac with Apple silicon.” In practical terms, do not decide from the Mac’s age, appearance, or product name; use the field macOS reports.

Check the chip in System Settings
On macOS versions that use the newer System Settings layout, the same information appears in the About panel.
- Open the Apple menu .
- Choose System Settings.
- In the sidebar, select General.
- Click About.
- Read the row labeled Chip for an Apple silicon Mac or Processor for an Intel Mac.
The screen may display wording such as Chip (Apple silicon) or Processor (Intel). The parenthetical text identifies the platform; the value next to it identifies the specific chip or processor.
If you cannot find System Settings
Older macOS releases use System Preferences rather than System Settings. In that case, return to the Apple menu and use About This Mac, which remains the direct route to the chip field. Menu names can vary by macOS release, but the reliable test is still whether the hardware line is labeled Chip or Processor.

Get a deeper hardware report with System Information
If you need more than the marketing name of the chip, open the detailed hardware report.
From System Settings
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select General, then About.
- Choose System Report.
- Review the hardware categories and processor details in the report.
With the Option key
- Press and hold the Option key.
- While holding it, open the Apple menu .
- Select System Information.
System Information exposes details that the summary page may not show, including the exact model identifier and serial number. Use it when you are documenting equipment, checking compatibility, preparing support information, or distinguishing two Macs that have similar names.

Chip name, Mac model, and processor are different facts
Apple’s summary screen can show both a Mac model name and a chip name, but they answer different questions:
- Model name: the product family or configuration name macOS assigns to the computer.
- Chip: the Apple silicon processor installed in that computer.
- Processor: the Intel processor name on an Intel-based Mac.
- Model identifier: a more precise hardware identifier available in System Information.
- Serial number: the device-specific identifier, also available in the system details.
For example, two Macs can share a broad family name while using different chips. Conversely, the same Apple silicon chip can appear in more than one Mac family. If an app, support technician, or compatibility guide asks which chip you have, report the value from the Chip row rather than only saying “MacBook Pro,” “MacBook Air,” or another model family.

Some Intel-based Macs include Apple’s T2 Security Chip. T2 handles security-related functions, but it is not the Mac’s main processor. Its presence does not turn an Intel Mac into an Apple silicon Mac.
When you need to identify the main processor, ignore a separate T2 reference and check the processor line in About This Mac or System Settings > General > About:
- Chip means Apple silicon.
- Processor means Intel.
This avoids a common mistake when reading a detailed hardware report that lists several Apple-designed components.

What Apple silicon Mac families can and cannot tell you
It is tempting to infer the chip from the year printed in a listing or from the Mac’s exterior. That is not a dependable method. Apple’s current support information lists model families and exceptions, and the catalog changes as new models are introduced.

These family and year ranges are useful for a preliminary check, not proof of the chip in a particular computer. A family can contain exceptions, and a seller’s year description may be incomplete. Confirm the individual Mac in its own About screen.
How to interpret the result
If you see an Apple M-series name
A Chip row followed by an Apple M-series designation confirms that the Mac uses Apple silicon. Record the complete value exactly as macOS displays it. The displayed name is more useful than a generic label such as “M-series,” especially when software requirements distinguish among chip generations or configurations.
If you see an Intel name
A Processor row followed by an Intel designation means the Mac is Intel-based. It does not have an Apple silicon main processor, even if the computer includes a T2 Security Chip or runs a recent version of macOS.

If you only need to answer “Intel or Apple silicon?”
You do not need the model identifier, serial number, memory size, or storage details. The field label alone answers the platform question: Chip is Apple silicon; Processor is Intel.

The About window looks different from instructions
Apple changes the layout between macOS releases. Look for either Chip or Processor rather than matching the position of a row or the appearance of a screenshot. If you are in System Settings, use General > About. If the redesigned settings interface is not present, use About This Mac from the Apple menu.
You opened a page that shows only the model name
Move from the general device overview to the processor row. If the summary does not provide enough detail, open System Report from General > About, or hold Option while choosing Apple menu > System Information. The detailed report is the appropriate place for model identifiers and other hardware data.
You are checking a Mac that cannot start normally
The documented checks require macOS to be running and the Apple menu to be available. If you cannot reach the desktop, use the Mac’s existing service or support process to obtain its serial number and hardware record; do not infer the processor solely from the case or purchase year. Once macOS is accessible, verify the value in About This Mac or System Information.

Ask for a screenshot or transcription of the Chip/Processor field, or request the model identifier from System Information. A broad description such as “2020 MacBook” does not establish whether the machine is Apple silicon, because Apple introduced both Intel and Apple silicon models across overlapping periods.

A practical identification checklist
- Open Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Find the hardware line labeled Chip or Processor.
- Record the complete value exactly as displayed.
- Use System Settings > General > About > System Report when you need a model identifier or serial number.
- Do not treat the T2 Security Chip as evidence of an Apple silicon main processor.
- Do not rely on the Mac’s year, enclosure, or family name when the built-in hardware field is available.
Which details should you provide to support or software vendors?
Give the detail that matches the question. For a basic compatibility check, say whether the Mac is Apple silicon or Intel and include the exact chip or processor value. For hardware registration or diagnostics, include the model identifier and serial number from System Information when requested. Avoid substituting a model family for the processor name: “MacBook Air” identifies the product line, not the installed chip.
If instructions refer to “Apple silicon,” “M-series,” or “Intel,” the Chip/Processor distinction is the authoritative answer on that Mac. If instructions ask for a precise model, continue into System Information instead of guessing from the chip name alone.
Why the built-in check is preferable
The macOS About screen reads the hardware identity reported by the computer itself, so it avoids uncertainty caused by second-hand listings, altered labels, or assumptions based on release dates. It is also free, requires no download, and does not expose you to third-party utilities that may report a simplified or misleading label.
For ordinary identification, stop after reading About This Mac. Use the detailed report only when a support request, software requirement, inventory record, or repair process needs information beyond the chip name.
