To check whether you’re registered to vote in the United States, use your state or territory’s official election website. Start at USAGov’s voter-registration confirmation guide or Vote.gov, choose your state or territory, and follow the link to its voter-registration lookup. Check that your record is active and that your name and address are correct; contact your election office promptly if anything is missing or wrong.

How to check your voter registration status

  1. Choose your state or territory. Open USAGov’s confirmation guide or Vote.gov and select the jurisdiction where you live. Follow the official state election website link to its registration lookup.
  2. Enter the information the official lookup requests. Required details differ by jurisdiction, so use the fields shown on that site rather than assuming there is one nationwide search format.
  3. Review the result. Confirm that the record says you are registered. Check your legal name, current address, and polling place. If your state displays party affiliation, check that too.
  4. Act promptly if the record is inactive, missing, or inaccurate. Contact your state or local election office and ask what correction or reactivation process applies and what deadline you must meet.

USAGov describes the purpose of the online check this way: “Check your voter registration online to confirm your voter registration number and if you are still registered.” A lookup is the official route to your jurisdiction’s record, but if its result is unclear, ask the election office to explain it.

What details to verify

  • Registration status: Check whether your record is registered and whether it is marked active or inactive.
  • Legal name: Make sure it reflects your current name.
  • Address: Confirm that the address is where you currently live and are registered to vote.
  • Polling place: Check the location shown for your address. Confirm it with the state or local election website if the lookup does not provide it or you are unsure.
  • Party affiliation: This field may not appear. States differ on whether they record or display party affiliation. A blank party field alone does not mean your registration failed.

What to do if your record is inactive, missing, or wrong

If it says inactive

Contact the election office for instructions specific to your jurisdiction. USAGov says election authorities may mark a voter inactive after the voter does not respond to election-office mail and has not voted in the last two federal general elections. An inactive record may require extra steps; if those steps are not completed, you may have to cast a provisional ballot. The office can tell you what applies locally.

If the lookup cannot find you or shows old information

Do not assume the lookup has diagnosed the problem or that your registration is valid. Contact your state or local election office promptly and ask how to verify or correct the record. Procedures differ by jurisdiction, and the office can explain what documentation or action is needed.

If an election is approaching

Ask the election office which correction options and deadlines apply to your situation. Do not rely on another state’s deadline or assume you can resolve an inactive or missing record on Election Day; rules and remedies vary.

Update your registration after a move or name change

Update your registration after a legal name change or a move. If you permanently move to another state, register in the new state. If you move close to an election, promptly ask the election offices in your former and new jurisdictions what options remain under their rules rather than assuming your old registration will continue to work.

Find the relevant state or territory’s official registration information through Vote.gov or USAGov’s voter-registration guidance. For a specific correction, the state or local election office is the right place to confirm the applicable procedure.

Check early: registration deadlines vary

Check before your state’s registration deadline so there is time to correct or update your record. USAGov’s deadline guidance, last updated February 23, 2026, notes that some state deadlines can fall up to 30 days before an election. That is not a universal deadline: use the current date and rule published by your own state or territory election authority.

For election-specific requirements, consult the official state election website or your local election office. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s voter FAQs and the Department of Justice’s state election resources also point voters toward official election information.

Does a voter-registration card prove you can vote?

A voter-registration card may be sent when you register or update your record, and it can confirm registration. Vote.gov says you do not have to carry the card to vote. You may still need to meet separate voter-identification requirements, which depend on your jurisdiction. Contact your election office for a replacement card or local ID instructions.

Why the answer depends on your jurisdiction

There is no single national voter-registration lookup that determines every voter’s status. States and territories set their own procedures, including what a lookup displays, how party affiliation is handled, which registration deadlines apply, whether same-day registration is available, and how voters can correct inactive or missing records. Use the official online lookup when available; if it is unavailable, ambiguous, or shows a problem, contact the state or local election office for the current instruction.
