To check whether an SSD is running correctly, identify whether it is SATA M.2 or PCIe/NVMe, then compare that protocol and the drive’s size and link capabilities with the exact M.2 socket in your computer’s manual. Check firmware detection, Windows visibility, and—if it is an NVMe drive—the negotiated PCIe link. M.2 describes a connector and module form factor; it does not guarantee that a socket supports every M.2 drive.

1. Identify the SSD’s protocol and specifications

Find the exact model number on the SSD or in the computer’s documentation, then look up the manufacturer’s specifications. Record its protocol, module length, and, for a PCIe/NVMe drive, rated PCIe generation and lane width. Do not infer that a drive is NVMe from its M.2 shape or connector alone.

If you are unsure which SSD is installed, the computer maker’s documentation or its support team may help identify it. ASUS’s M.2 SSD troubleshooting guide likewise recommends checking drive and slot compatibility when a drive is not detected.

2. Check the exact M.2 socket in the computer manual

Use the manual for your exact motherboard or computer model—not just the product family name. Find its M.2 specifications and storage-sharing table, then confirm all of the following:

  • IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
  • Protocol: Does the socket support SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both? A SATA M.2 drive will not work in a socket that supports only PCIe/NVMe, and an NVMe drive needs a socket that supports PCIe/NVMe.
  • Module size: Does the socket support the drive’s physical length?
  • PCIe capability: For an NVMe drive, what generation and lane width does the socket support? Check whether they depend on the CPU or on another installed device.
  • Sharing: Does using this socket disable or limit a SATA port, another M.2 socket, or an expansion slot?

These details are model-specific. For example, the ASUS TUF GAMING B450-PLUS II manual lists its M.2_1 socket as supporting PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA and says that populating it disables SATA6G_5/6. That example does not describe other motherboards; use your own manual’s table and footnotes.

3. Check firmware detection and settings

Restart the computer and enter UEFI/BIOS using the computer maker’s instructions. Look for the drive under storage or NVMe information. A drive missing from one simplified status screen is not conclusive by itself; check the firmware documentation for where that system reports storage devices.

Kingston NV3 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD | PCIe 4.0 Gen 4x4 | Up to 6000 MB/s | SNV3S/1000G
  • Ideal for high speed, low power storage
  • Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
  • Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
  • Includes Acronis cloning software
  • 5-year limited warranty

Look for model-specific settings only after confirming what they control in the manual. A setting such as M.2 Link Speed or PCIe Link Speed concerns PCIe link speed. SATA Mode Selection concerns the SATA controller; it is not a universal switch between SATA and PCIe operation for an M.2 socket. ASUS documents these separately in its Intel W790 Series BIOS manual. Names and availability vary among boards and firmware versions.

Avoid casually changing SATA, AHCI, RAID, or storage-controller mode on a computer’s boot drive. Such a change can affect the existing operating system’s boot path. Follow guidance specific to your computer and operating system before changing it; the setting names alone do not provide a universal safe conversion procedure.

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).

4. Check whether Windows can see the drive

If firmware detects the SSD but Windows does not show it where you expect, check whether the operating system sees the hardware before changing partitions or formatting anything:

  1. Open Device Manager and check Disk drives and Storage controllers.
  2. Open Disk Management and see whether the disk appears as offline, uninitialized, or unallocated.
  3. If Windows does not detect it, consult the computer or motherboard maker’s support guidance for your model, including any relevant storage-controller drivers.

A new, blank disk may need initialization and partitioning before it can be used normally. Do not initialize or format a disk that might contain files you need: those actions can put existing data at risk.

5. Compare an NVMe drive’s negotiated link with what the system supports

For an NVMe SSD, use a drive or platform diagnostic that reports the current PCIe link generation and width. Compare that reading with both the SSD specifications and the exact socket’s manual, accounting for CPU or chipset constraints, lane sharing, and any firmware link-speed setting. The drive’s advertised maximum is not necessarily the capability of the socket it occupies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the reading under load as well as while the drive is idle. Microsoft documents NVMe Dynamic Link Rate Management (DLRM), which can adjust PCIe link speed according to I/O workload on systems that meet the feature’s firmware and Windows prerequisites. Consequently, a lower link-speed reading at idle does not, by itself, establish a problem; see Microsoft’s DLRM requirements.

A link below the SSD’s maximum does not alone prove that the drive is in the wrong slot. The socket may provide fewer lanes, share lanes, depend on the installed CPU, or be subject to a firmware setting. ASUS’s PCIe interface speed guidance recommends checking both the component and slot capabilities; its example concerns an expansion slot, so use the M.2 socket’s own documentation to assess an M.2 drive.

6. Troubleshoot a drive that firmware does not detect

If the SSD is absent from the firmware’s storage information, verify compatibility before assuming the drive has failed. Power down and follow the computer’s service instructions before opening it. Then:

  • Confirm that the socket supports the SSD’s SATA or PCIe/NVMe protocol and physical size.
  • Reseat the drive so it is fully inserted and held flat by its retaining screw.
  • Review the manual’s notes about shared lanes, disabled ports, and CPU-dependent socket capabilities.
  • If available, test the drive in another known-compatible socket or system.

An NVMe-to-USB enclosure can help connect an NVMe SSD to another computer for a basic detection check, provided the enclosure supports NVMe and the drive’s physical size. It cannot establish the PCIe generation or lane width negotiated by the original motherboard. Microsoft community troubleshooting mentions an enclosure as an alternative connection, but compatibility must still be checked for the specific enclosure and SSD: Microsoft Q&A discussion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the drive fails in multiple known-compatible systems, it may be faulty; if it works elsewhere, revisit the original computer’s socket compatibility, seating, firmware settings, lane-sharing notes, and storage controller. Cross-testing narrows the possibilities but is not a guaranteed diagnosis.

Choosing between multiple M.2 sockets

Use the exact board manual to compare candidate sockets rather than assuming that one is best based on its position or label. Check protocol support, supported module size, PCIe generation and lane width, CPU or chipset lane source, sharing with other M.2 or SATA connections or expansion slots, and any relevant firmware link-speed options. Also consider physical access and cooling when choosing between sockets. The manual’s connection table and footnotes determine what each slot supports on that system.
