To check whether a Samsung phone is carrier-unlocked, try an active SIM from a different provider: a prompt for a network unlock code is a strong sign the phone is restricted to its original network. A failed call or “No service” message alone does not prove it is locked. Samsung’s Settings screens can help identify the carrier configuration and whether a SIM is recognized, but the original carrier or retailer must confirm unlock eligibility and handle an unlock request.
Check the carrier configuration in Settings
This check can help identify the carrier associated with the phone, but it does not independently confirm whether the device is unlocked.
- Open Settings > About phone > Software information > Service provider software version.
- Review the service-provider details, which may include a sale code, network code, and carrier ID.
Samsung US describes these details as a way to identify carrier configuration, not as a universal locked-or-unlocked indicator. Menu names and layouts can vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s guide to moving a Galaxy phone to a different service carrier.

- Open Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status.
- Look for the network name under Network, when available.
A displayed network name indicates that the phone is recognizing network information; it does not establish that the phone is unlocked for use with every provider. If the SIM is missing or not recognized, troubleshoot that issue before drawing conclusions about a carrier lock. Samsung notes that the menu can differ by model and software version. Test with an active SIM from another provider
If you can, insert or activate a known-working SIM from a provider other than the one the phone was originally associated with. Follow any on-screen prompt carefully:
- Network unlock code requested: This is strong evidence that the handset has a network restriction. Contact the original provider or retailer about removing it.
- SIM PIN requested: This protects the SIM card itself; it is not the phone’s network unlock code. The SIM provider can help with its PIN.
- No service or a failed call, without an unlock prompt: The result is inconclusive. The SIM may not be active or recognized, carrier settings may need attention, or the phone may not support the provider’s network.
Samsung distinguishes a SIM PIN from a network unlock code in its UK guidance on SIM and network unlock prompts. Do not treat a failed connection by itself as proof of a lock.

Ask the original carrier or retailer to confirm
For a definitive answer, contact the provider or retailer from which the phone was obtained. Ask whether the device is locked, whether it meets that provider’s unlock requirements, and how to submit a request. Samsung US says unlock requirements vary by carrier and are not dictated by Samsung; its UK guidance directs customers to the original service provider or retailer. Rules and eligibility differ by country and carrier, so do not assume another region’s policy applies to your phone.

Carrier support pages can also show how that carrier handles the process. For example, AT&T’s device unlock support covers its own process and requirements; it does not establish the rules for other providers.

What each check can tell you

After an unlock, check service compatibility
Unlocking removes a carrier restriction; it does not guarantee that every SIM or network will work. The replacement SIM must be activated, and the phone must support the provider’s network. If the phone is confirmed unlocked but still cannot connect, ask the new provider to verify SIM activation and device compatibility.
