On most Android phones, turn on Show refresh rate in Developer options, then watch the number while scrolling or running an animation. On a Samsung Galaxy, check Settings > Display > Motion smoothness. A 120Hz specification is the screen’s supported peak, not a promise that it will stay at 120Hz every moment: adaptive refresh, app behavior, power settings, resolution, and heat can all affect the rate.

How to check if your phone is using 120Hz

Android phones

  1. Confirm the exact model supports 120Hz. Check its official specifications. “Up to 120Hz” describes a maximum capability, not constant operation.
  2. Enable the refresh-rate overlay. On Android, open Settings > System > Developer options > Show refresh rate. Android describes this as an overlay showing the current refresh rate. Menu names or locations can differ by manufacturer. If Developer options are hidden, use the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model to enable them.
  3. Watch the overlay during motion. Scroll through a long list or trigger a smooth system animation. An adaptive display may lower its rate on a static screen, so a reading below 120Hz while nothing moves does not establish a problem.
  4. If it does not reach 120Hz, check the relevant limits. Review the phone’s refresh-rate setting, power-saving mode, supported resolution, app or game settings, and temperature. Compare those settings with the manufacturer’s specifications for that model before concluding that the display is faulty. Android’s [multiple-refresh-rate documentation] explains the system overlay and display-mode policy; its [game refresh-rate guidance] notes that power saving or thermal throttling can restrict the rate.

Samsung Galaxy phones

Open Settings > Display > Motion smoothness, or search Settings for “Motion smoothness.” Choose the option your model offers. Samsung says Standard uses 60Hz, Adaptive varies the rate up to 120Hz, and High locks select models at 120Hz. High is not available on every Galaxy phone.

Samsung also documents two important constraints: Power Saving Mode switches the screen to Standard, and some models switch to Standard when WQHD+ resolution is selected. Exact choices vary by model and software. See [Samsung Canada’s Motion smoothness instructions] for its model-dependent guidance.

iPhone

First check whether the exact iPhone model supports ProMotion. Apple’s current developer documentation lists iPhone 13 Pro and later Pro models, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 and later among supported iPhones. On these displays, the system can vary refresh dynamically from 10Hz to 120Hz.

Apple’s documentation does not describe an end-user numeric live-refresh overlay comparable to Android’s. ProMotion is managed by iOS, and a third-party app cannot force the display to remain at 120Hz. See Apple’s [ProMotion guidance] for supported devices and how the system controls refresh.

Why does a 120Hz screen show 60Hz—or another lower rate?

Adaptive refresh is meant to change with what the phone is doing. Android combines frame-rate preferences from active views and system components, and behavior can change around touch, app launches, scrolling, and animation. Samsung describes Adaptive as varying up to the model’s maximum; Apple says ProMotion iPhones vary between 10Hz and 120Hz. A lower reading at a particular moment can therefore be normal.

  • The screen is idle or the content is static. The phone may lower refresh when a high rate is not needed.
  • The app is drawing fewer frames. The display can refresh at 120Hz while a game renders at 60 frames per second; the app’s output and the panel’s update cadence are separate measurements.
  • A setting limits the display mode. Power saving can impose a lower rate. On Samsung, Standard is 60Hz, and WQHD+ can trigger a switch to Standard on some models.
  • The phone is hot or constrained by power policy. Android’s game guidance says power saving and thermal throttling may restrict refresh behavior.
  • The model does not offer a 120Hz mode in the current configuration. Available refresh settings and resolution combinations vary by device.

Does 120Hz mean 120 FPS?

No. Hz describes how often the display can update; FPS describes how often an app or game renders frames. A 120Hz display may show content rendered at 60 FPS, and a high refresh-rate setting does not make every app produce 120 frames per second. Android’s display policy chooses among supported modes based on active content and system preferences.

A browser animation test or an app’s FPS counter may estimate how quickly that content is being drawn. It is not automatically a direct measurement of the physical display’s refresh rate. For the display-rate question, use Android’s system overlay when available, and treat an app’s FPS readout as a separate figure.

What to conclude from the reading

  • The overlay reaches 120Hz during motion: the phone is operating at that rate under those conditions. It may still choose a lower rate elsewhere.
  • The overlay stays below 120Hz: check the active display mode, power setting, resolution, app behavior, and heat against the limits for the exact model. One low reading alone does not prove a fault.
  • You use an iPhone with ProMotion: the display is variable and system-controlled; Apple does not document a comparable built-in user-facing numeric overlay.

When comparing phones, keep four things distinct: peak supported refresh rate, fixed versus adaptive behavior, the live indicator available to users, and any restrictions imposed by settings, content, power, or temperature. A reported display rate and an app’s FPS are not interchangeable.
