To check whether a phone will work on a carrier, identify the phone’s exact model and regional variant, compare its LTE and 5G NR bands with the carrier’s current bands, and then confirm VoLTE, unlock status, and carrier approval with the carrier’s official IMEI or BYOD checker. Band overlap is necessary, but it does not guarantee that calls, every network feature, or coverage at a particular location will work.

What to check before you decide

Compatibility depends on more than a phone’s family name or a “4G” or “5G” label. Check each of these for the exact phone and service you plan to use:

  • Exact model and region: closely named phones can have different radio configurations by market or carrier.
  • LTE band overlap: compare the phone’s LTE bands against the carrier’s LTE bands.
  • 5G NR band overlap: compare 5G NR bands separately from LTE. A matching band number in one generation does not establish support for the other.
  • VoLTE and carrier features: verify voice compatibility and activation as well as data support.
  • Carrier acceptance and eligibility: check the IMEI, unlock status, and whether the device is blocked or otherwise ineligible.
  • Local coverage and plan: a band list does not show which frequencies are deployed at your location or whether your plan includes the service.

How to check a phone’s carrier compatibility

  1. Identify the carrier, country, and service. Note the provider and, if coverage in a particular area matters, the location. An MVNO or sub-brand may use a host network but still have its own compatibility process, so consult the provider you will actually use.
  2. Find the phone’s precise model number and region. Look in the phone’s Settings under About, check the original packaging, or use the manufacturer’s official specifications. Do not rely on the product-family name alone.
  3. Write down the phone’s radio bands. Find the manufacturer’s LTE/FDD-LTE and TD-LTE entries, then its 5G NR entries. Keep the two lists separate. For example, Apple’s iPhone 14 specifications list LTE and 5G NR separately, identify model numbers, and note that 5G, LTE, and VoLTE availability varies by market and carrier.
  4. Get the carrier’s current band list. Use the carrier’s official network or bring-your-own-device page. Compare the band identifiers directly rather than trying to infer a match from frequency names. Carrier deployments and accepted devices can change.
  5. Verify voice and feature support. Confirm that the exact model supports VoLTE on the carrier and that 4G calling or VoLTE is enabled. Depending on the carrier, market, and plan, some features or 5G service may have additional requirements.
  6. Run the official IMEI or BYOD check. Submit the IMEI only through the carrier’s official checker or a trusted support channel. Bell’s IMEI checker explains that the 15-digit IMEI can be found by dialing *#06# or in the phone’s settings. An IMEI result complements—not replaces—checking bands and features.
  7. Check the phone’s eligibility and configuration. Make sure it is unlocked and not reported lost or stolen. If service works but a feature does not, consult the carrier’s APN and configuration guidance.
  8. Test after activation. With Wi-Fi off and mobile data active, check for the expected network indicator, test mobile data, and place a call. A 4G or 5G icon is a useful basic check, not proof that every compatibility requirement is met.

How to compare the band lists

Match like with like: LTE against LTE, and 5G NR against 5G NR. A phone needs relevant bands in common with the carrier to access those bands, but the number of shared bands alone cannot establish the full experience. The carrier may use different frequencies in different places, and a device’s band support does not establish local deployment, plan access, or voice approval.

As a Canada-specific example, Rogers’ BYOD page lists LTE bands B12, B5, B2/B25, B4/B66, and B7, and 5G bands N71 (DSS), N66 (DSS), N41, and N78. These are Rogers examples, not a universal list. Rogers also says a compatible phone must use LTE and make calls over LTE (VoLTE) as it retires 3G.

For another illustration of how device specifications are organized, Apple lists the iPhone 14’s 5G NR bands separately from its LTE bands and identifies model numbers on its specification page. The listed bands are specific to that product and do not mean every iPhone 14 variant is supported by every carrier.

Why matching bands may not be enough

VoLTE and voice service

Data-band compatibility does not ensure that calls will work. Rogers and Bell identify VoLTE as a requirement for their services; UK government consumer guidance advises users to make sure 4G calling/VoLTE or 5G calling is switched on. Check the carrier’s requirements for your exact model and enable the relevant calling setting.

Carrier approval, lock status, and IMEI eligibility

A phone may have radio bands in common with a network and still fail the carrier’s compatibility or eligibility check. Bell says devices must support its LTE/5G bands and VoLTE, be unlocked, and not be reported lost or stolen. It also cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed for phones bought internationally or from another carrier. Use the official checker rather than treating an unlocked label or a band match as approval.

Coverage, plan, and local deployment

A carrier’s general band list does not establish which bands are available at your address, whether the phone can use the carrier’s particular 5G layer, or whether your plan permits access. More supported frequencies can provide access to more coverage, but local reception depends on the carrier’s deployment and location. Check the provider’s current coverage and plan information for the places and service you care about.

Examples of official guidance

  • Rogers, Canada: its BYOD page provides a carrier-specific band list and says to compare device specifications with its network frequencies. Treat the listed bands as Rogers information, not as a standard for other Canadian or international providers.
  • Bell, Canada: its bring-your-own-phone guidance sets out band, VoLTE, unlock, and blacklist considerations; its IMEI checker provides a separate device validation step.
  • Apple iPhone 14: its specification page illustrates why model numbers and separate LTE and 5G NR lists matter. It is an example, not a universal compatibility determination.
  • United Kingdom: government consumer guidance on network switch-off recommends checking for 4G or 5G with mobile data active, enabling 4G calling/VoLTE or 5G calling, and contacting the provider if unsure. The page, last updated 29 July 2026, says UK operators will switch off 2G between 2029 and 2033; that timetable applies to the UK.

If the phone passes the checker but something still does not work

  • Calls fail but data works: recheck VoLTE support for the exact model and carrier, and confirm the calling setting is enabled.
  • Data or a feature fails after activation: check the carrier’s APN and device-configuration guidance.
  • The checker rejects the device: confirm that you entered the IMEI for the phone being activated, then ask the carrier whether the exact model and variant can be accepted.
  • Service differs by location: compare the carrier’s local coverage information; a general band match does not establish reception at a specific address.
