As of October 17, 2026, Office LTSC 2021 is no longer receiving security updates from Microsoft. Its published end-of-support date was October 13, 2026. You can still verify that the installation reached the last build listed for the volume-licensed edition, but a current build does not extend the product’s support period.
To check the installation, open Word or Excel and choose File > Account. Record the version shown under Product Information and About, then compare it with the newest row in Microsoft’s table named Volume licensed versions of Office LTSC 2021. Do not use the separate retail Office 2021 table.
What the check can—and cannot—tell you
There are two separate questions:
- Is this installation on the latest published LTSC 2021 build? The version-history comparison answers this.
- Is Microsoft still issuing security updates for LTSC 2021? The product lifecycle answers this. LTSC 2021 reached end of support on October 13, 2026.
Those answers can differ. An installation may match the newest version in Microsoft’s history and therefore be fully patched to the last available release, while the product itself is outside its support lifecycle. Microsoft says that after the lifecycle date it no longer provides technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for Office LTSC 2021.
The version check remains useful for documenting the final state of a device, investigating whether an organization deployed the latest release, and planning an upgrade. It should not be treated as evidence that future security fixes will arrive.

Find the installed Office LTSC 2021 version
Use Word or Excel
- Open Word or Excel from the affected computer.
- Select File.
- Select Account. In some installations this page is labeled Office Account.
- Under Product Information, locate the About area.
- Record the complete version and build number, including the number in parentheses if Office displays one.
The build number is the value you need for a reliable comparison. A product name alone—such as “Office LTSC Professional Plus 2021”—does not show whether the installation has the latest release in the LTSC history.
Record the details consistently
For an individual computer, write down the version exactly as displayed. For an organization, capture the device name, user or department, Office edition, version, build, and date checked. Keeping the full string avoids confusion when two computers have the same edition but different cumulative update levels.
Do not infer the edition from a shortcut, a Start-menu entry, or an old deployment document. The Account page is the practical place to confirm what the running Office installation reports.

Compare the build with the correct Microsoft table
Choose the volume-licensed LTSC table
Microsoft’s Office update-history page contains more than one Office 2021 history. Select the table titled Volume licensed versions of Office LTSC 2021. A separate table for retail Office 2021 can contain different release rows and is not the correct reference for a volume-licensed LTSC installation.

Compare the complete version/build shown in Word or Excel with the newest dated row in the volume-licensed table. Microsoft describes a match with the newest listed entry as being up to date against that release history.

If your installation shows Version 2108 (Build 14334.20918), it matches the newest row recorded in the history at the time of checking. If the live Microsoft table now displays a later row, use that later row instead. If your build is older, the device has not reached the latest release listed for its edition, although the lifecycle date still determines whether Microsoft will provide another update.
Prompt Office to check for an available update
Run the built-in command
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File > Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Select Update Now.
- Wait for Office to contact the update location configured for that installation. Close Office applications if prompted, then reopen the application and check the version again.
Update Now asks Click-to-Run to check for an available package. It is not a separate support-status lookup and it does not change the lifecycle date. A message saying that no update is available means that the configured source offered nothing newer at that moment; it does not prove that the product is still supported.
When the command is unavailable
An organization can disable or control update commands through policy. The button may be hidden, unavailable, or unable to complete without administrative rights. In that situation, do not attempt to bypass the organization’s deployment controls. Ask the administrator which update source and deployment schedule apply to the computer.

Understand where Click-to-Run gets updates
Office Content Delivery Network
Microsoft documents the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN) as the default source for Click-to-Run updates. A computer configured for the CDN checks Microsoft’s service when an update operation runs and when the organization’s policy schedules checks.
Internal shared folder
An organization can redirect Office to an internal shared folder instead of the CDN. Administrators must obtain the new Office build and copy the required files to that location. If the share is unavailable, stale, or missing the expected build, Update Now can complete without moving the installation forward.
Centralized deployment and Configuration Manager
Microsoft also documents management through Configuration Manager and other centralized deployment controls. In a managed environment, the local Office command is only one part of the process: policy can determine the channel, source, maintenance window, and permitted build. The device may therefore remain on an older version until the administrator approves and deploys a package.
To troubleshoot a managed installation, ask IT for three specific facts: the configured source (CDN or internal location), the approved LTSC 2021 build, and the deployment schedule or policy that controls installation. Those details explain why two apparently identical computers can show different builds.

Interpret the results without confusing “current” and “supported”

What end of support means for LTSC 2021
Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement sets October 13, 2026 as the end-of-support date for Office LTSC 2021. Microsoft’s stated consequence is explicit: “After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for this product.”
End of support does not normally uninstall Office, invalidate existing documents, or prevent the applications from opening. It means the product has no continuing Microsoft commitment for fixes or security patches. A device can remain operational while its exposure and compliance position worsen because newly discovered vulnerabilities will not receive LTSC 2021 fixes.
For an audit or security record, preserve both pieces of evidence: the version/build captured from File > Account and the lifecycle status for the edition. Reporting only “latest build installed” omits the fact that the product is beyond its support date.

Microsoft 365 Apps
Microsoft’s broader upgrade guidance describes Microsoft 365 Apps as continuously updated, with new features released as frequently as monthly. This path uses a subscription model and a cloud-oriented servicing approach. It is generally considered when an organization can operate a continuously changing feature set and meet its identity, connectivity, and licensing requirements.

Office LTSC 2024
Microsoft identifies Office LTSC 2024 as the on-premises path for commercial customers that are not ready to move to the cloud. LTSC 2024’s initial feature set dates to September 2024. As with other LTSC releases, the feature set is fixed at initial release rather than receiving the ongoing feature cadence associated with Microsoft 365 Apps.

The choice is not simply “newer Office versus older Office.” Evaluate subscription versus one-time volume licensing, cloud-oriented versus on-premises deployment, feature-update cadence, connectivity constraints, regulatory requirements, and how your organization tests changes.
Plan before replacing the installation
- Inventory every computer running LTSC 2021, including edition, version, build, operating system, and business owner.
- Identify integrations such as add-ins, macros, document workflows, line-of-business applications, and document-management systems.
- Classify devices by connectivity and operational constraints. A disconnected process-control computer may have different requirements from a standard office laptop.
- Test the selected destination with representative documents and workflows.
- Confirm licensing and deployment rights with the organization’s administrator or licensing provider.
- Set a retirement or migration date, then retain the version and deployment records for audit purposes.
Troubleshoot a build that will not advance
The version is older than Microsoft’s newest LTSC row
- Run File > Account > Update Options > Update Now once, then reopen Office and record the version again.
- Ask whether the computer is pointed to the Office CDN or an internal shared folder.
- If an internal source is used, ask the administrator whether the latest approved package was copied there.
- Confirm that policy has not deferred updates or limited installation to a maintenance window.
- Compare the edition with the table title. A retail Office 2021 installation should not be judged by the volume-licensed LTSC table, and vice versa.
Update Now finds nothing
First compare the displayed build with the live volume-licensed LTSC history. If it already matches the newest row, the command may be behaving correctly. If it does not match, the likely next questions concern the configured source, policy, network access, permissions, or whether the organization has stopped publishing LTSC 2021 content after the lifecycle date.

The computer is organization-managed
Local troubleshooting cannot override a centrally managed deployment. Provide IT with the device name, Office edition, exact build, time of the check, and any message shown after Update Now. Ask IT to verify the deployment policy and source rather than reinstalling Office independently, which can create licensing and configuration problems.
The device is offline or isolated
An isolated computer may be intentionally configured for an internal update share or a controlled deployment process. The administrator must stage the approved package in that environment. Internet access to the CDN is not a valid assumption for a device designed to remain disconnected.
Administrator checklist for documenting status
- Confirm the installation is the volume-licensed Office LTSC 2021 edition.
- Capture the version and build from File > Account > Product Information > About.
- Compare it with the newest row in Microsoft’s Volume licensed versions of Office LTSC 2021 history.
- Record the date of the comparison and the exact row used. The history can change as Microsoft updates its page.
- Run Update Now where policy permits, and record whether the configured source responds.
- Document whether the source is the Office CDN, an internal shared folder, or a centrally managed deployment system.
- Mark the lifecycle status separately from the build status. A current build after October 13, 2026 is still an unsupported LTSC 2021 installation.
- Assign an upgrade owner and evaluate Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC 2024 against compatibility, licensing, connectivity, and operational requirements.
Why this two-part check is the reliable method
The Account page gives you the version actually running. The volume-licensed LTSC history tells you how that version compares with Microsoft’s published releases for the correct edition. Click-to-Run’s update command tests the source configured for that computer. The lifecycle page determines whether Microsoft still promises future security maintenance. Using all four pieces prevents the most common mistake: treating a successful “no updates available” message or a matching build as proof that Office LTSC 2021 remains supported.
