To find out whether your laptop can use Bluetooth, check two things separately: whether the exact model has Bluetooth hardware and whether Bluetooth is currently switched on. On Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices (Windows 10). On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. If the Bluetooth control is missing, that alone does not prove the laptop lacks Bluetooth; check the model specifications and troubleshoot detection or driver issues first.
Bluetooth hardware and the Bluetooth switch are different checks
A laptop can include a Bluetooth adapter while Bluetooth is turned off. Conversely, some Windows devices do not include Bluetooth hardware. Microsoft advises checking the device specifications if Bluetooth is absent; most Windows devices have it built in, but not all do. Microsoft’s Windows pairing guidance
Start with the settings for your operating system. If you see a Bluetooth switch, you can check whether it is on there. If you do not see one, use the exact laptop model’s specifications to establish whether Bluetooth should be present before concluding that there is no adapter.

What to do if Bluetooth is missing or unavailable in Windows
A missing or grayed-out Bluetooth switch does not, by itself, establish that the laptop has no Bluetooth hardware. Windows may be unable to detect or enable an adapter because of settings, a driver, firmware, a stopped service, a recent update, or a hardware fault. Microsoft notes that outdated or incompatible drivers are a common cause of Bluetooth connection problems. Microsoft: Fix Bluetooth problems in Windows
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the exact model’s specifications. Look up the laptop model on its manufacturer’s support site. This distinguishes a device that was not built with Bluetooth from one whose adapter is not currently working.
- Look in Device Manager. Search Windows for Device Manager and inspect the device list for a Bluetooth adapter. Its name may include “radio.” If the laptop specifications say Bluetooth is included but the adapter is absent or has an alert, the system may not be detecting it correctly.
- Check Airplane mode and restart. Make sure Airplane mode is off. If the Bluetooth control disappeared, fully shut down the PC and turn it back on.
- Check drivers and firmware. Use Windows’ driver update options and the laptop manufacturer’s support page for model-specific drivers or firmware. Microsoft says Bluetooth hardware errors are often related to drivers or firmware supplied by the PC manufacturer. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. Open the Get Help app and use its Bluetooth troubleshooter. If the problem persists after the model-specific driver and firmware checks, contact the laptop manufacturer about a possible hardware issue.
If Bluetooth is on but an accessory will not connect
For headphones, keyboards, mice, trackpads, or game controllers, make sure the accessory is in pairing mode, nearby, and charged or has fresh batteries. If it appears in the laptop’s device list but will not connect, remove it from the list and pair it again. Microsoft: Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows

When a USB Bluetooth adapter makes sense
Consider a USB Bluetooth adapter only after the laptop’s specifications confirm it lacks usable built-in Bluetooth, or after manufacturer support establishes that the built-in adapter cannot be used. Microsoft documents plugging an adapter into a Windows device that lacks Bluetooth as an option. Microsoft’s Windows pairing guidance
Before choosing one, verify that it supports your laptop and operating system, fits an available USB port, and meets the needs of the accessory you want to connect. An adapter adds Bluetooth capability to a compatible Windows device that lacks it; it is not a general fix for a missing switch caused by a driver, firmware, settings, or hardware problem.
