To check whether your business qualifies for an SME growth fund, identify the exact program and country, then compare its current rules with your business’s size, ownership, sector, location, finances, and proposed use of funds. “SME” does not have one universal definition, and meeting a size threshold alone does not guarantee funding.

If you mean India’s newly approved SME Growth Fund, official announcements describe its purpose and broad focus but do not yet publish a complete eligibility checklist or application process. Treat the information below as an initial screen, not confirmation that your business can apply.

How do I check whether my business qualifies for an SME growth fund?

  1. Identify the exact fund and country. Search the fund’s official website or government announcement for its full name, administering agency, and the location of eligible businesses. Similar names do not mean programs share rules.
  2. Find the current application guidance. Check whether applications are open, who can apply, and whether the page relates to the current funding round. Read the eligibility, exclusions, eligible-use, and selection sections—not just the headline description.
  3. Confirm how the program defines an SME. Compare the fund’s thresholds with your business’s turnover, assets or investment, employee count, and any rules for connected or affiliated companies.
  4. Check your legal form, ownership, and location. Confirm that your entity type and owners are permitted and that your operating location falls within the fund’s geography.
  5. Match your business and project to the fund’s purpose. Look for required sectors, growth or innovation objectives, eligible costs, and any restrictions on how funding can be used.
  6. Review the funding terms and application requirements. Find out whether support is a grant, loan, guarantee, or equity investment; whether matching funds are required; and what financial, ownership, and project evidence must be submitted.
  7. Ask the official administrator about unclear points. Save the current guidance and obtain written clarification where the rules do not clearly cover your circumstances. Do not treat an informal adviser’s view as an eligibility decision.

The European Commission notes that eligibility depends on the specific funding program and call. Its general guidance also warns that a business that appears small on its own may not qualify if it has significant resources through a larger group. National programs set their own tests, so use the rules for the fund you intend to approach: European Commission: Eligibility—who can get funding?

What counts as an SME?

There is no single worldwide SME threshold. A fund may measure business size using turnover, employee numbers, assets or investment, and may aggregate figures across partner or linked businesses. Do not assume that a label used for tax, registration, or another government program automatically applies to a particular fund.

India’s current enterprise-size thresholds

The Government of India’s Press Information Bureau states that criteria effective from April 2025 set the following upper thresholds. A business must meet both the investment and turnover limits for the relevant category:

Category Investment ceiling Turnover ceiling
Small enterprise ₹25 crore ₹100 crore
Medium enterprise ₹125 crore ₹500 crore

These are size classifications, not a promise of selection for India’s SME Growth Fund. Check the official classification guidance and the fund’s eventual rules for how investment and turnover are calculated, including whether linked businesses affect the assessment: Press Information Bureau: Small and Medium Enterprises Growth Fund.

European Union SME definition as a comparison

For the EU definition described by the European Commission, a medium-sized enterprise has fewer than 250 employees and either annual turnover of no more than €50 million or a balance sheet total of no more than €43 million. The Commission also says group relationships and resources can affect SME status. These figures illustrate why definitions differ; they are not criteria for an Indian fund or another country’s program.

What is known about India’s SME Growth Fund?

On October 6, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a ₹10,000 crore government commitment to establish the SME Growth Fund. The Prime Minister’s Office describes it as direct equity capital for high-potential SMEs with demonstrated business viability and scalability. The announcement says a majority allocation will be directed toward small and medium manufacturing-focused enterprises, and that SMEs in Tier-II and Tier-III industrial clusters will also be considered.

The official description also highlights technology adoption, expansion, strategic sectors, manufacturing, entry into global markets, and integration with global value chains. These are stated aims and focus areas; the announcement does not make each one a universal pass/fail requirement. Where do I find the application criteria?

Use the official government or fund-administrator page as the controlling source, and check it again before applying because eligibility may be specific to a funding call. As of the October 6, 2026 announcements, the Indian materials describe the fund’s commitment, structure, and broad investment intent, but do not state its manager, application opening date, application route, minimum or maximum investment, ownership terms, complete financial or ownership tests, sector exclusions, or selection rubric. Until official operational guidance appears, it is not possible to confirm an individual business’s eligibility for this fund.

Why you should not use another country’s fund as a shortcut

Programs with “growth” or “SME” in their name may have different purposes, status, and tests. For example, the Australian Government’s Growth Services page describes entity, trading-history, turnover or operating-expenditure, and sector requirements, and says the program is closed to applications. Its Industry Growth Program has separate innovation-related thresholds and is paused to new applications. The U.S. Small Business Administration says it does not provide grants for starting or expanding a business, although targeted programs exist. None of these examples establishes eligibility for India’s SME Growth Fund or another fund.
