To verify support, identify the device’s exact model, match it to the correct operating system, and compare that model with Apple’s supported-device list for the current release. Apple’s September 14, 2026 releases are iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27. Then check feature requirements separately: a device can run the operating system while lacking hardware, language, regional, or pairing requirements for a particular feature such as Apple Intelligence.
What “support” means
There are two different compatibility questions:
- Operating-system support: whether Apple lists your exact device model for the relevant iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, visionOS, or tvOS release.
- Feature support: whether that model also meets the narrower requirements for a feature announced at the event. Hardware generation, chip, language, region, and a paired device can all matter.
Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement established version 27 as the current major platform family. The Apple security releases page is the authoritative place to check the current point release, release date, and supported models. It also lists releases for older operating-system generations, so a device absent from the version-27 list may still receive a security or maintenance update for an earlier generation.

The version-27 launch date is a release context, not a guarantee that every model can install it. Compatibility is determined by the model list for the specific release you are considering.

Do not use only a purchase year, a broad family name, or a shorthand such as “an M-series Mac.” Apple’s lists distinguish generations and, for some products, chip or year. Record the model name and any generation, chip, or year shown in the device’s information screen.

iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings.
- Choose General, then About.
- Record the values shown for Model Name and Model Number. Keep the complete model designation, including a generation or Pro/mini/Air label.
An entry such as “iPad” is not precise enough if Apple separates the generations in its support list. Use the full name displayed in About when you compare it with Apple’s release information.
Mac
- Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Select About This Mac.
- Record the Mac model, model year or generation when shown, and chip information. Intel and Apple-silicon models can have different support cutoffs.
“MacBook Pro” or “Mac mini” alone may cover several generations. The chip and year shown in About This Mac let you match the entry accurately.
Apple Watch
- On the watch, open Settings > General > About, or open the iPhone’s Watch app and choose My Watch > General > About.
- Record the series designation, such as Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, or Apple Watch SE 3.
Keep the series number with the model name. A generic “Apple Watch” label cannot establish compatibility.
Apple TV
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Record the Apple TV model information exactly as displayed.
Use the model entry rather than assuming that every Apple TV generation follows the same tvOS support path.
Apple Vision Pro
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Record the product name and any model designation shown.
Apple’s visionOS list should be checked separately from iPhone, iPad, or Mac lists.
Step 2: Open the matching Apple release entry
- Go to Apple’s Security Releases page.
- Locate the operating system that matches the device: iOS for iPhone, iPadOS for iPad, macOS for Mac, watchOS for Apple Watch, visionOS for Apple Vision Pro, or tvOS for Apple TV.
- Open the current release entry and note its version number and date.
- Read the supported-device list in that entry. Compare the complete model designation you recorded, not just the product family.
The page can show several generations at once. Select the exact platform and release before deciding whether the device is supported. A device that cannot move to version 27 may still appear in an entry for an earlier operating-system generation.
Why the point release matters
Major-version announcements are only the starting point. Apple publishes point releases and may continue publishing updates for older system generations. Check the live release entry immediately before installation so you are using the current model list and release date rather than an event-day summary.

What to save when you check
Write down the release number, date, and exact model-list wording you used. This is useful when a household has several similar products or when an update appears in stages. It also prevents confusing an older security entry with the newest major release. The date matters because Apple’s security releases page is updated as additional point releases and older-generation updates appear.
Step 3: Interpret the model-list result

This comparison answers the operating-system question only. It does not certify access to Apple Intelligence or any other feature with separate requirements.
Do not treat “listed” as “every feature enabled”
A model-list match means Apple identifies the device as eligible for that operating-system release. It does not promise identical performance, identical feature sets, or identical availability in every country. The feature’s own requirements can be stricter than the operating system’s requirements, and Apple can stage a feature by language or region.
Step 4: Check feature requirements separately
Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement gives a narrower hardware list for Apple Intelligence than for the operating systems themselves. Compare your exact model with the applicable requirement below.

These are feature requirements, not a replacement for the operating-system model list. For example, a Mac that can install macOS 27 but uses an Intel processor does not meet the stated M1-or-later Apple Intelligence requirement. Conversely, meeting the hardware requirement does not remove language, region, or pairing conditions.
Apple Watch pairing condition
For Apple Watch SE 3, Apple specifies pairing with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Apple also notes that some Apple Watch features require an iPhone nearby. Treat the watch and its paired iPhone as one compatibility check: verify the watch series, verify the iPhone model, and then check the feature’s regional and language availability.
Feature-by-feature questions to ask
- Is the feature included in the operating-system release, or is it listed separately with its own requirements?
- Does Apple name a minimum chip, generation, or product series?
- Does the feature require another Apple device, such as an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone for an Apple Watch?
- Does Apple say that the feature depends on a nearby paired device?
- Are language, country, or regional restrictions stated?
Answer all five questions before telling someone that a device “supports” an announced feature. A yes to the first question alone is not enough.

Check language and regional availability
Apple says feature availability can vary by platform, language, and region. A supported model can therefore show different feature access from the same model in another country or language setting.

- Siri AI initially rolls out in English.
- French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish are scheduled to come in October.
- Apple says Siri AI is initially unavailable on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS in the European Union.
- Apple says Siri AI is unavailable in China while regulatory requirements are addressed.
Those language and regional statements are time-sensitive. Recheck Apple’s current feature-availability page and the latest release announcement for your country and preferred language before changing settings or concluding that a feature is missing.
Why a region check belongs at the end
Region is not a substitute for model checking. First establish that the device is listed for the operating system and that its hardware meets the feature requirement. Then apply Apple’s language and regional qualifications. This order avoids blaming a country restriction for what is actually an unsupported chip, and avoids blaming hardware when a feature is simply still rolling out in a particular language.
A complete check for one device
Use this sequence whenever Apple announces a major update or feature:
- Write down the model. Use the device’s About screen and include generation, chip, year, or series where shown.
- Select the platform. Do not compare an iPad with the iOS list or an Apple Watch with the iPhone list. Choose the operating system designed for that product.
- Find the current release entry. On Apple’s Security Releases page, locate the relevant version-27 entry or the newest older-generation entry that may cover the device.
- Match the full name. Look for the exact model designation in Apple’s supported-device list. If only a family name matches, keep checking until the generation or chip also matches.
- Record the result. Mark the device as listed for version 27, listed only for an older release, or not shown in the entries you checked.
- Identify the desired feature. If the reason for upgrading is Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, or another announced capability, open the feature requirements rather than treating operating-system support as proof of access.
- Check hardware, language, region, and pairing. Apply every condition in the feature requirements. For an Apple Watch, include the paired iPhone and whether it is nearby when Apple says that is required.
- Recheck immediately before installation. Apple’s point releases, supported-model lists, language rollouts, and regional availability can change after the event announcement.
Use a three-result status instead of a simple yes or no
For each product, record one of three practical outcomes: version 27 supported, older release supported, or not listed. Add a second note for the feature: feature hardware qualifies, feature has another condition, or feature hardware does not qualify. This two-part status is more accurate than a single green or red label.
Common situations and the right conclusion
“My iPhone can install iOS 27, but I cannot find Apple Intelligence.”
First confirm that the iPhone is an iPhone 16 model or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max. If it is an earlier iPhone that appears on the iOS 27 list, the operating system and Apple Intelligence results are different: the former is supported, while the latter does not meet Apple’s stated iPhone hardware list. If the model does qualify, check the current language and region rules.
“My Mac is listed for macOS 27, but the feature requirements mention M1.”
Check About This Mac for the chip. macOS support and Apple Intelligence support use separate thresholds. Apple’s feature list requires an M1-or-later Mac, while the operating-system list may include additional Mac generations.

“My iPad name matches, but several generations use that name.”
Return to Settings > General > About and capture the generation or chip. Apple’s feature list, for example, distinguishes iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPad models with M1 or later. A family-level match cannot answer either the operating-system or feature question when generations differ.
“My Apple Watch is new enough, but the feature still does not appear.”
Check the series against Apple’s list, then check the paired iPhone. Apple requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone for Apple Watch SE 3 and says some watch features require an iPhone nearby. Finally verify language and region.

Not necessarily. Apple publishes entries for older system generations too. Search the Security Releases page for the device’s platform and inspect older release entries before deciding that no further update is available. The result may be continued support on an earlier operating-system generation rather than eligibility for version 27.
“The event announcement said a feature was coming, but it is unavailable in my country.”
Use Apple’s regional and language qualifications as part of the compatibility test. The announced Siri AI rollout includes language staging and regional limits, including initial restrictions in the European Union and China. A hardware match cannot override those availability rules.
“I know the processor family, so can I skip the model lookup?”
No. Processor shorthand is useful for a feature check, especially when Apple states an M1-or-later requirement, but it does not replace the complete operating-system model list. Apple can distinguish models by generation, year, or product designation. Record the full entry first, then apply the chip rule for the feature.
“The update appears on one device but not another identical-looking device.”
Compare the model records rather than the exterior design. Two products with the same family name can belong to different generations, use different chips, or be covered by different release entries. Also compare the platform: iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, visionOS, and tvOS have separate lists.

Pitfalls that produce a wrong answer
- Using the announcement headline as the compatibility list. The September 14 date identifies the version-27 family; the live release entry identifies supported models.
- Checking only the newest major version. Older-generation releases can still contain relevant security or maintenance updates.
- Matching a family name only. “iPad,” “MacBook Pro,” and “Apple Watch” each cover multiple generations.
- Assuming operating-system eligibility includes Apple Intelligence. The feature list has narrower hardware cutoffs.
- Ignoring the paired iPhone. Apple specifies this condition for Apple Watch SE 3 and says some watch features require an iPhone nearby.
- Treating language and region as permanent. Apple’s Siri AI rollout is staged and can change as availability expands.
- Relying on an old screenshot or list. Point releases and older-generation entries change; use the current release entry and date.

- Product and exact model name.
- Generation, chip, or year shown in the device information screen.
- Matching operating system.
- Release entry and date checked on Apple’s Security Releases page.
- Whether the exact model is listed for version 27 or only for an older release.
- The feature you care about and its separate hardware requirement.
- Language, country or region, and any paired-device condition.
- The date you performed the check.
This record prevents a common mistake: checking one device’s operating-system eligibility and then assuming another device in the same household has the same result. Apple maintains separate lists for each platform, and feature requirements can be narrower still.
Household checklist
Create one line for every iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro. For an Apple Watch, add the paired iPhone on the same line. Use a separate column for the desired feature so a version-27 result is not mistaken for an Apple Intelligence result. Update the date whenever Apple publishes a new point release or changes a language or regional rollout.

- Use the exact model, not the purchase year or a broad product name.
- Use the matching operating-system list for that product.
