If Spotify sounds worse through Android Auto than it does over Bluetooth, check Spotify’s volume normalization and compare playback routes before changing anything else. Those checks can show whether the difference follows a particular playback route, but they cannot by themselves prove Spotify or Android Auto is defective.

What Spotify’s volume normalization changes

Spotify describes volume normalization as balancing soft and loud songs for a more uniform listening experience. On Android, find it at Settings and privacy > Playback > Volume controls > Volume normalization. Spotify also offers Loud, Normal, and Quiet settings: Loud is intended for noisy surroundings, Normal is the default, and Quiet is intended for quieter surroundings. The setting affects overall level and listening experience; it is not documented as a specific Android Auto repair.

Spotify says you cannot change audio settings while using Spotify Connect to play on another device, so do not assume the same controls are available on every remote playback route. If the controls are unavailable, test them directly in the Spotify app when it is not using Connect.

Compare Android Auto with another playback route

Use the same recording and keep perceived loudness as close as reasonably possible. A louder route can seem better even when its sound is not clearer. Spotify describes Android Auto and Bluetooth as car-listening options, and AUX as another option where the equipment supports it. Listening comparisons can narrow down where a difference appears, but they do not identify its cause.

  • Android Auto: Note whether the connection is wired or wireless and whether the sound seems quieter, distorted, flat, or tonally different.
  • Bluetooth: Play the same recording separately over the vehicle’s Bluetooth connection and compare it at a similar perceived level.
  • AUX, if available: Try this only if the vehicle has an AUX input and the phone can provide audio through it. Some phones need an audio adapter. AUX is a comparison route, not an Android Auto fix, and it does not retain the Android Auto interface.

If the issue appears only through Android Auto, that points to a route-specific difference or processing somewhere in that playback path—not necessarily to Spotify alone. If the same change also happens in other apps, that is useful information to include when seeking help.

Check Spotify settings and gather details

  1. Record your setup: Note the phone model, Android version, vehicle or head-unit, and whether Android Auto is wired or wireless. These details matter because the available evidence does not identify a universal cause across devices.
  2. Compare normalization: In Spotify for Android, open Settings and privacy > Playback > Volume controls > Volume normalization. Compare the current setting with normalization off while playing the same recording through Android Auto, at a similar perceived loudness.
  3. Restore your preference if there is no difference: Turn normalization back on or select the level you prefer. The comparison is a diagnostic check, not a vendor-certified fix for Android Auto audio.
  4. Compare routes: Play that recording over Bluetooth, and AUX if both the car and phone support it. Note changes in loudness, distortion, or tone, and whether other apps show the same behavior.
  5. Ask for configuration-specific support: If the symptom reproduces only with one phone-and-car pairing, contact the relevant phone, vehicle, or head-unit support channel with the setup details and route comparisons.

What reports of poor Android Auto sound establish

Individual user reports describe Android Auto sounding worse than Bluetooth, but they are not controlled tests and do not establish a general defect. In a Google Android Auto community post dated June 27, 2025, a user with a 2020 Kia Soul and Motorola Edge 2024 described wired Android Auto as flat and over-modulated while Bluetooth sounded better. A separate post dated October 27, 2021, from a user with a 2021 VW Tiguan and Samsung S10+ described Android Auto as quieter, with poorer treble and bass than Bluetooth. These accounts show that some users have reported route differences; they do not explain why those differences occurred or prove that other setups share the same issue.
