An unlocked POCO phone may still lack the right network bands or carrier support for calls. To check it properly, identify the exact model and regional variant, compare its official specifications with your carrier’s requirements, check coverage where you’ll use it, and test with the intended SIM. “Unlocked” alone does not guarantee compatibility.
What “unlocked” does—and doesn’t—tell you
“Unlocked” generally means the phone is not restricted to one mobile provider’s SIM. It does not confirm that the handset supports your carrier’s LTE or 5G bands, that the provider will enable VoLTE (also called 4G Calling) on it, or that you have coverage where you need service. Treat those as separate checks.
Find the exact POCO model and regional variant
Start with the full model identifier, not just a family name such as POCO C, F or X. Look in Settings > About phone, on the box, or in the seller’s exact listing. Confirm the region or variant using POCO/Xiaomi documentation; two phones sold under a similar name may have different network specifications.
POCO’s C71 FAQ illustrates why the variant matters: it lists different network bands for International and Indian versions and notes that regional availability and local operator support can affect connectivity. Those specifications apply to the documented C71 variants, not to other POCO models.

Compare the specifications with your carrier’s requirements
Open the official specification or support page for your exact variant. Record the listed LTE bands and, if relevant, 5G bands, plus whether VoLTE is supported. Compare those details with the intended UK network’s requirements, but do not treat a single matching band—or a 5G logo—as proof that the phone will work fully.
Ask your carrier or MVNO directly: “Will this exact POCO model and regional variant work for 4G data and VoLTE/4G Calling on your service? Is it accepted for 5G?” A band match does not establish that the carrier will provision voice service on the handset. UK government guidance advises contacting your provider if you are unsure; O2’s help page is an example of provider-specific information about Wi-Fi and 4G/5G calling, not a universal compatibility list.

Check coverage separately
Use Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile to compare estimated 4G and 5G coverage in the places you’ll use the phone. The map helps answer whether a network is likely to have signal there; it does not show whether that carrier will accept or provision your particular POCO for VoLTE.
Test the phone with the intended SIM
- Insert the SIM for the carrier or MVNO you plan to use.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and use mobile data. Check whether the phone connects to 4G or 5G where coverage is expected.
- In the phone’s network or calling settings, make sure 4G Calling (VoLTE) or 5G Calling is turned on if the option is available. Government guidance says: “Make sure 4G calling (sometimes known as VoLTE) or 5G calling is turned on in your phone settings.”
- Place a call and check whether mobile data continues as expected. If data works but calls fail, contact the provider and ask it to check support and provisioning for the exact model and variant.
If there is no signal, compare the result with coverage in that location before concluding the handset is unsupported. If the phone connects to data but cannot make calls, ask the provider specifically about VoLTE or 4G Calling. The provider can help distinguish coverage problems from device acceptance or service provisioning.

Keep the 2G switch-off in perspective
UK mobile operators are expected to switch off 2G networks between 2029 and 2033, according to government guidance updated 29 July 2026. This is context for older devices, not a compatibility verdict for a current POCO model. The guidance says customers of providers that do not operate a 2G network, including Three and Smarty, will not be affected by the 2G switch-off.

For a useful compatibility check, give the provider the phone’s full model identifier and regional variant, and name the carrier or MVNO. Also say whether you need 4G data, VoLTE calling, 5G, or all three. Without those details, “unlocked POCO” is not specific enough to establish whether the phone will work on a particular UK service.
