If someone offers you a new SBA COVID-19 loan or grant, don’t click the link or share information until you verify it independently. COVID EIDL stopped taking new applications in 2022, and PPP is closed to new applications. For an existing loan, contact SBA or your lender using details you find yourself on SBA.gov. A familiar logo or official-sounding sender is not proof.
How to check an SBA COVID loan or grant offer
- Pause before responding. Don’t reply, click links, open unexpected attachments, or provide personal or banking details to an unverified caller or message. SBA warns that scammers impersonate the agency, lenders, and collection agencies through calls and emails. Its guidance is to use support details found independently on SBA.gov or through your lender. See SBA’s phishing and fraud guidance.
- Inspect the sender and the full web address. SBA says official SBA email addresses end in
@sba.gov, and warns that its logo can be misused. Check the actual email domain and the complete link destination; a display name, logo, or matching sender alone does not establish that a message is genuine. Don’t use a contact number or link supplied only in the suspicious message. - Check whether the claimed award fits the program’s status. A purported new COVID EIDL or PPP award is a major warning sign: both programs are closed to new applications. If the message concerns an existing loan, distinguish servicing, repayment, or forgiveness from a new award.
- Find the right contact channel independently. Navigate to the relevant page on SBA.gov yourself, or use contact information in established records from your lender. Ask whether the communication or account action is real before taking steps requested by the message.
- Report suspected fraud or identity theft through the verified route. Use the SBA Office of Inspector General (OIG) Hotline for suspected SBA program fraud, waste, abuse, or mismanagement. If someone used your identity to obtain a loan, follow SBA’s separate identity-theft procedure.
What the offer says matters: EIDL, PPP, and “grant”
COVID EIDL
The COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program provided loans and advances to small businesses affected by the pandemic. SBA says it stopped accepting new applications and advances on January 1, 2022; it stopped processing increase requests and reconsiderations on May 6, 2022; and the RAPID portal closed on May 16, 2022. Existing borrowers can still seek servicing assistance through the SBA Loan Portal and COVID EIDL customer service. SBA’s EIDL page was updated March 26, 2026; check it directly for current instructions: COVID-19 EIDL.
Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)
PPP is closed as a new program. Existing borrowers may still have lender, servicing, or forgiveness questions; that ongoing support is not evidence that new PPP loans are available. SBA directs borrowers with questions about individual PPP applications to their lender. Its PPP page and contact page explain the available routes.
Be precise about “grant” claims
People may use “grant” broadly, but EIDL advances and PPP loans were different forms of assistance with different rules. A vague message offering a “COVID relief grant” does not identify a currently open SBA award. Ask which named program and what existing application or loan the message concerns, then verify with SBA or the relevant lender through an independently found channel.

Warning signs that call for independent verification
- A fee to release an award. SBA OIG says SBA representatives do not charge applicants for disaster assistance, inspections, or help filling out applications. Federal and local disaster workers do not solicit or accept money. Treat a payment demand tied to a promised award as a warning sign.
- A request for sensitive information through an unverified channel. Don’t send identity, banking, or account details through a link, attachment, or third-party platform until you have confirmed the contact. SBA says federal guidance is free and it will not ask for personal information through third-party platforms.
- Pressure to act through a supplied link or attachment. Use the official SBA site or your lender’s established contact details instead. SBA OIG cautions: “The presence of an SBA logo on a webpage does not guarantee that the information is accurate or endorsed by SBA.” See SBA OIG’s scam and fraud advice.
- A “new” COVID EIDL or PPP approval. The programs are closed to new applications, so independently confirm any claimed award before responding or paying.
Where to go for an existing loan or suspected scam
COVID EIDL servicing or payment
For existing COVID EIDL questions, SBA lists CESC@sba.gov and the SBA Loan Portal. Its page says to include your loan or application number and the reason for your request when emailing; verify the current address and portal by navigating to SBA.gov yourself. For payment support, SBA lists its Secure Payment Portal and 833-853-5638. SBA says it no longer accepts paper checks effective October 1, 2025. Confirm current payment instructions on the official EIDL page before making a payment.
PPP servicing or forgiveness
For an individual PPP application or existing-loan question, contact the lender associated with the loan, using contact details from your established records or verified lender site. SBA’s contact page lists a separate help route for direct forgiveness applicants; consult that page for the current number and eligibility before calling.

If a loan was obtained using your identity, SBA says its documentation includes a photo ID, an Identity Theft Report filed at IdentityTheft.gov or with local police, and a signed SBA Declaration of Identity Theft. For COVID EIDL, SBA lists IDTheftRecords@sba.gov and portal upload as routes; verify the current process on SBA’s loan identity-theft page before sending personal records.
