Look up the clinician in the official licensing-board records for the profession and the state where you will receive care. For physicians and physician assistants, the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) also offers a centralized way to cross-check license and disciplinary information. An NPI number or a telehealth company’s claim is not, by itself, proof of a current state license.
Start with the right clinician and state
“Online medical provider” can refer to people regulated by different authorities: physicians (MDs or DOs), physician assistants (PAs), nurse practitioners, psychologists, therapists and other licensed professionals. A medical-board search is not a universal lookup for every health profession. First identify the individual clinician’s exact profession and credential, then find the regulator responsible for that profession.
Use the state where you, the patient, will receive care—not just the clinician’s home address, the company’s headquarters or the location of its website. FSMB’s state-policy summary, last updated in August 2025, says state medical boards generally require physicians providing telemedicine to be licensed in the patient’s state or registered there when an applicable registration system exists. Requirements vary, so the patient’s state regulator is the authority to check for the specific situation. FSMB’s telemedicine policies by state

Before searching, note the clinician’s name as it appears on the platform, the credential shown next to the name, and any license number supplied. These details help you choose the right search and distinguish the clinician from someone with a similar name. A company may have clinicians licensed in several states, so verify the individual who will provide your care—not only the business or its general claims about coverage.

If you are arranging a visit while away from your usual residence, identify the state where you will actually be during the appointment and ask that state’s regulator which rules apply. FSMB’s general summary describes the usual focus on the patient’s state, but it does not determine every person’s circumstances or every profession’s rules. The regulator can clarify what applies to your situation.
How to check a provider’s license
- Identify the clinician. Record the full name as the clinician presents it, the credential (for example, MD, DO or PA), and, if available, the license number. A telehealth platform may show a clinician profile, but use those details to search the regulator’s records rather than treating the profile itself as verification.
- Choose the state where care is received. If you are at home in one state while the clinician is elsewhere, begin with your state’s regulator. If you are unsure which state’s rules apply—for example, because you are traveling—ask the regulator directly.
- Find the official licensing board. Use FSMB’s state medical board directory to reach a state medical board for physician-related inquiries. For a different profession, use the relevant state authority for that profession; the FSMB directory and Physician Data Center do not establish coverage of every type of health professional.
- Open the board’s license lookup. Board websites and search layouts differ. Look for the board’s own license or provider search, and confirm that you are on the regulator’s official site rather than a third-party directory.
- Search by name and credential. If the site supports it, search by license number as well. Names can match more than one record; compare available identifiers and professional details before deciding that a result belongs to the clinician you intend to see.
- Read the complete record. Check the profession or license type, the status shown, and any board-listed disciplinary, restriction or other relevant information. Do not rely on a name match alone or assume that every board displays records in the same format.
- Resolve unclear results with the board. If the search returns no match, conflicting details or a status you cannot interpret, contact the regulator using the contact information on its official site. Provide the clinician’s name, credential, license number if available, and the state in which you will receive care.
In practice, work through the search in a consistent order. First confirm you selected the right profession and state. Next compare the search result’s name and credential with the clinician’s profile. If you have a license number, use it as another way to distinguish records. Finally, inspect the license type, status and any restrictions or disciplinary information shown by the board. This avoids treating a partial match, a directory listing or a short search-result label as a complete answer.
Board tools are not identical. Some may offer different search fields or display record details in different ways; do not assume that a missing field or unfamiliar label means the same thing in every state. When a board lookup does not make a status clear, contact that board and ask how to interpret the specific entry and whether it represents current authority for the clinician and state in question.

The state board’s record is the place to resolve a question about authorization in that state. For physicians and PAs, FSMB’s Physician Data Center (PDC) can provide a useful centralized cross-check. These sources serve different purposes; neither an NPI nor a general provider profile substitutes for the relevant state license record.
| Route | What it is useful for | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| State licensing board lookup | Checking the clinician’s record with the regulator for the state where you will receive care, and finding the regulator to contact about a mismatch. | Search tools and record formats vary by state and profession. Use the board responsible for the clinician’s exact profession. |
| FSMB Physician Data Center | Cross-checking verified physician and PA license and disciplinary information drawn from state medical and osteopathic boards. | Its described coverage is physicians and PAs, not every licensed health profession. For a state-specific question or unclear result, contact the state board. |
| FSMB PDC Query profile | Reviewing profile information that FSMB says includes verified biographical, license and education information, as well as an NPI field. | A profile field or identifier does not replace confirmation of current authorization in the patient’s state. |
| NPI information | Helping distinguish or identify a provider when compared with other details in a record. | An NPI is an identifier, not a decision that a person holds an active state license. |
FSMB describes PDC information as verified data from state medical and osteopathic boards. Its PDC Data Files page provides information about the data files, but a centralized profile should be treated as a cross-check—not as a reason to skip the patient state’s regulator when you need a definitive state-specific answer.
The sources are complementary rather than interchangeable. A state board lookup ties the question to the state regulator responsible for the profession. PDC can help check physician and PA records in a centralized profile, including verified biographical, license and education information. An NPI may help you tell whether you have found the right person, but it does not answer whether that person is currently authorized to practice in the state where you receive care.
FSMB’s PDC Data Files page also describes the scope and handling of its data files. That information may help explain the centralized service, but the practical decision remains state-specific: if a board result and a profile do not align, or you need an answer about current authorization, contact the state board through FSMB’s directory. Do not resolve a discrepancy by assuming one format is more current or more authoritative without asking the regulator.

There is no single search route established here for every health profession. FSMB’s directory is a route to state medical boards, while PDC is described for physicians and PAs. For a nurse practitioner, psychologist, therapist or another professional, identify the corresponding state regulator rather than assuming that a medical-board or PDC result covers that credential.
How to interpret a search result
Read the record as a whole, not just the first status label or search-result snippet. Confirm that the person, credential and state correspond to the clinician you plan to see. Then review the listed license status and any board-reported restrictions or disciplinary information. If the site uses a label you do not understand, ask the board what that label means and whether it reflects current authority to practice in the relevant circumstances.
- A matching name is not enough. Use a license number or other available identifying details to distinguish clinicians with similar names.
- An NPI is not a license. FSMB lists NPI separately among PDC profile elements, alongside licensure verification. Possession of an NPI does not establish current state authorization.
- A missing result is not a definitive answer. The search could be using a different name or credential, or you may be looking in the wrong profession’s database. Check the identifiers and regulator, then contact the board if the result remains unclear.
- Do not treat one database as universal. FSMB’s PDC information concerns physicians and PAs; other professions have their own state licensing authorities.
A record that appears to match should still be checked for the exact credential and license type. Someone’s name may appear in a professional directory or in a profile that includes an NPI, but those facts do not establish that the person has a current license for the care you are seeking. The state board’s displayed status and any board-listed restrictions are the relevant record details to review.
Likewise, a blank search page or no result is a reason to verify your inputs, not a finding that the clinician is unlicensed. Try the full name and credential shown by the clinician, add a license number if available, and make sure you are in the correct profession’s database. If the search remains inconclusive, contact the board rather than making a decision from an empty result.
When contacting the regulator, be specific. Say that you are checking an online clinician for care in a particular state, identify the profession and credential, and share the license number if you have it. Ask whether the record corresponds to that clinician and how to understand the current status and any listed limitations. A direct question about the board’s record is more useful than asking whether a platform as a whole is legitimate.
Telehealth rules depend on the patient’s state
A clinician can be physically located in a different state from the patient, but that does not make the clinician’s home-state record the only one that matters. FSMB’s summary, updated in August 2025, reports that boards generally require physicians practicing telemedicine to hold a license in the patient’s state or to use a registration route where that state has one. Because state rules differ, verify the applicable arrangement with the patient’s state board rather than inferring permission from the clinician’s address or the platform’s availability.
FSMB also publishes a broader comparison of state regulations on telemedicine and out-of-state physicians. That comparison is dated 2021, so it can provide historical context for the kinds of state-to-state differences that exist, including special-purpose licenses or registrations in some jurisdictions; it should not be treated as a current determination of the law in a particular state. Check the current regulator’s information for that state. FSMB’s 2021 state comparison

The distinction between a full state license and a state-specific registration or other route matters because the policy summary describes both possibilities in general terms. Do not infer that every state offers a registration option, or that a rule found in an older comparison still applies. The patient’s state board can confirm whether a particular clinician’s authorization route is applicable and current.

A platform may accept an appointment request or display a clinician as available, but those features do not establish which state authorization applies to a particular patient. Check the regulator for the state where the patient will receive care and the provider’s precise profession.
What to do when you cannot confirm the license
Pause before relying on an uncertain online record. Recheck the clinician’s full name, credential, license number and the state you selected. If the record still does not match or explain the status, contact the official board and ask whether the clinician is authorized for the care you are seeking in your state. For a physician or PA, you can also compare the details with an FSMB PDC profile, but take discrepancies to the state regulator.
Keep the inquiry focused on the individual clinician’s license. A platform’s registration, a clinician’s NPI, a profile page, or the fact that an appointment can be booked does not answer the state-board question. If the regulator cannot confirm the record from the information you have, ask what identifying details it needs rather than drawing a conclusion from an inconclusive search.
For a physician or PA, the PDC can be a useful second check because FSMB describes its information as verified licensure and disciplinary data from state medical and osteopathic boards. But a difference between the PDC profile and a state-board record is a reason to ask the regulator—not a reason to choose whichever result is more favorable. The state board is the route to resolve a state-specific question.
There is no need to buy a general directory, reference book or telehealth accessory to verify an individual’s current state license. The useful steps are public-record lookup and regulator contact. If you encounter a service that presents an NPI or a provider profile as proof of licensure, remember that identification information and state authorization are different things.

Can I use FSMB to check any type of online clinician?
No. FSMB’s Physician Data Center is described as a source for physician and PA license and disciplinary information from state medical and osteopathic boards. It does not establish coverage for every licensed health profession. For another profession, find the state authority responsible for that credential.
Does an NPI prove that a provider is licensed?
No. An NPI is an identifier that may help distinguish a provider when compared with other information. FSMB lists it separately from license verification in PDC profile elements. Check the relevant state board record for current authorization.
What if I cannot find the clinician in the board’s lookup?
Check that you selected the correct state and profession, and search using the clinician’s full name, credential and license number if available. A missing result is not definitive by itself. If you still cannot find a matching record, contact the board using its official contact information and ask what details it needs to verify the clinician.
What should I do if a license status or restriction is unclear?
Do not interpret an unfamiliar label on your own. Contact the regulator and ask what the displayed status or board-listed restriction means and whether it represents current authority for the circumstances you describe. If a PDC profile differs from the state record, take the discrepancy to the state board.
Is FSMB’s 2021 telemedicine comparison current law?
No. FSMB’s comparison is dated 2021 and is useful as historical context for state variation, including special-purpose licenses or registrations in some jurisdictions. For current requirements, use the patient state’s regulator. FSMB’s separate state-policy summary was last updated in August 2025, but the state board remains the place to confirm a particular case.
Do I need to pay for a special product to verify a license?
The practical verification route is the relevant state board’s public lookup and, if needed, contact with the regulator. For physicians and PAs, FSMB’s PDC can serve as an additional cross-check. A general directory or NPI listing does not establish current authorization in the patient’s state.
