Search the profile photo and the person’s stated details online, then judge what you find alongside the person’s behavior. A reverse-image match to a different name or story is a reason to be cautious—not definitive proof of who owns the image or whether the profile is fraudulent. A search with no matches does not verify that a profile is genuine.

How can I tell if a dating profile is fake?

Look for inconsistencies across the person’s photo, identity claims, profile details, and conduct. The FBI recommends researching a person’s photo and profile using online searches. Compare any results with the name, occupation, location, and story the person has shared, and consider whether the conversation fits those claims.

One unusual detail or ordinary delay is not proof of fraud. A cluster of conflicting claims, evasiveness, pressure, and financial requests deserves more caution. The FBI advises going slowly and asking questions; it also flags people who seem too perfect, quickly push conversations off the dating or social platform, try to isolate someone from friends or family, ask for inappropriate photos or financial information, or repeatedly promise to meet but do not.

How do I reverse image search a dating profile picture?

  1. Open or save the profile picture. Use an image-search service to search for the image or upload it according to that service’s instructions. Avoid uploading private or intimate images to unfamiliar services.
  2. Inspect the results. Look for visually matching or similar images associated with another name, profile, or identity. A result shows that an image appears elsewhere; it does not by itself establish who is using it or why.
  3. Compare the result with the person’s claims. Check whether names, locations, occupations, or other details are incompatible with the dating profile. The FTC’s advice is to reverse-search a profile photo and watch for mismatches between a photo, name, and profile details (FTC, February 2025; FTC, February 2021).
  4. Search profile details separately. Search distinctive phrases or relevant details from the profile and compare what you find with the person’s story. Treat both image and text searches as clues, not identity checks.

Official guidance recommends online research and reverse-image searches but does not rank search providers or promise comprehensive results. If a search finds nothing, that is inconclusive: absence from search results does not certify that a photo or profile is authentic. A matching image can also have an explanation other than fraud, so weigh it with the rest of the evidence.

What are the signs a dating profile photo is stolen?

  • The same or a very similar photo appears online with a different name or incompatible identity details.
  • The image-search results conflict with the profile’s stated location, occupation, or personal story.
  • The person avoids reasonable questions about inconsistencies while pushing for quick intimacy, private contact, or money.

These are warning signs, not a way to conclusively identify the person in a photograph. The key question is whether the image and identity claims fit together; do not treat one search result as conclusive proof.

Which behavior should raise concern?

Pay attention to the pattern of interaction, not just the picture. The FBI identifies rapid movement off-platform, attempts to isolate someone from friends or family, requests for inappropriate photos or financial information, and repeated failure to meet after promising to do so as warning signs (FBI romance-scam guidance).

The FTC describes a common progression: someone wants to move the conversation away from the dating service, says they cannot meet, and eventually asks for money for an emergency, travel, or an investment (FTC, February 2025). A request to switch platforms alone does not prove a scam, but pressure combined with evasiveness or a request for money is a strong reason to pause.

Be especially wary if a person you know only online urges you to invest in cryptocurrency or forex. The CFTC warns that romance-related investment fraud can involve cultivating a relationship before steering someone into a fraudulent investment scheme (CFTC romance-fraud guidance). Do not send money or invest based on the advice of someone you have not met in person.

What should I do if someone I met online asks me for money?

  1. Do not send money or gifts. Do not pay by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or another method, and do not share financial or account information or intimate images. The FTC advises never sending money or gifts to a love interest you have not met in person (FTC guidance).
  2. Pause contact and talk to someone you trust. Share the situation with a friend or family member before responding further. If you suspect a scam, stop contact rather than confronting the person.
  3. Report the profile to the dating service. Use the app or site’s reporting process so it can review the account and messages.
  4. For suspected fraud in the United States, report it to the relevant agency. The FTC accepts reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FBI directs romance-scam victims to IC3.gov and advises stopping contact (FBI guidance). These are US reporting resources.
  5. If you already sent money, contact the payment company promptly. Ask whether the transfer can be stopped or recovered. The FTC notes that it is worth asking, but the money may already be gone. Be wary of anyone who promises to recover it for a fee.

In an FBI press release, Timothy R. Slater, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Criminal Division, said: “If you suspect an online relationship is a scam, stop all contact immediately,” (FBI press release).

What do the reported statistics show?

The FTC’s 2023 data spotlight reported that among people who said they lost money to a romance scam the prior year, 40% said contact started on social media and 19% said it started on a website or app (FTC, February 2023). These figures describe the reported starting point among people reporting romance-scam losses; they are not estimates of how many dating profiles are fake or how likely a dating-app user is to encounter one.
