Check two separate records before you pay or accept medication: the treating clinician’s authority to practice where you are located, and the dispensing pharmacy’s license in the relevant state. A service’s own “licensed” claim does not verify either one.
What “licensed” means for an online acne service
An online service may connect you with a clinician and send a prescription to a separate pharmacy. Those are different roles, with different regulators and records. A valid clinician license does not establish that the pharmacy is licensed, and a pharmacy listing does not establish that the clinician may treat you.
- Clinician: Is the person evaluating you licensed or otherwise legally permitted to practice in the state where you are located?
- Pharmacy: Is the pharmacy that will fill and ship the medicine listed and in good standing in the relevant state pharmacy board’s records?
State rules differ, including rules for telehealth and prescribing. Federal guidance can explain general principles but does not resolve every state’s exceptions or every profession’s requirements.

How to verify the treating clinician
- Ask the service for identifying details. Request the clinician’s full name, professional designation, state of licensure, and license number, and confirm which clinician will evaluate you.
- Find the state board. Use the Federation of State Medical Boards’ state medical board directory to locate the appropriate board. The clinician’s profession determines which licensing authority to check; a medical board directory may not be the right lookup for every professional designation.
- Search the board’s official verification system. Match the name and license number, then review the credential’s current status and any restrictions or disciplinary information displayed. If details do not match, contact the board using contact information on its official website.
- Check authority where you will receive care. Do not assume a clinician licensed in one state can treat a patient located in another. HHS explains that telehealth providers generally must meet applicable licensure requirements where the patient is located, but the exact rules and exceptions vary. Its cited guidance concerns behavioral-health telehealth, so check your own state authority for acne care and the clinician’s profession.
How to verify the dispensing pharmacy
- Get the pharmacy’s legal name and location. Ask the service which pharmacy will fill and ship the prescription; a service brand alone may not identify the dispenser.
- Open FDA’s state lookup locator. Use the FDA’s Locate a State-Licensed Online Pharmacy page to reach the appropriate state board of pharmacy database.
- Look up the pharmacy in the official state records. Confirm its identity and license status there. FDA advises consumers not to use an online pharmacy that is not listed in the relevant state lookup.
- Check the basic safeguards. FDA says a legitimate online pharmacy should require a prescription, provide a U.S. physical address and telephone number, and have a licensed pharmacist available to answer questions. If one of these is missing, stop and investigate before proceeding.
Warning signs that call for a pause
FDA warns about online pharmacies that do not require a doctor’s prescription, are not licensed by the relevant state board of pharmacy, or do not make a licensed pharmacist available. - The service will not identify the clinician or pharmacy sufficiently for you to check official records.
- The clinician’s name, profession, license number, or status does not match the board’s record, or the record shows a restriction you do not understand.
- The pharmacy is absent from the relevant state lookup, or its listed identity differs from the one the service gave you.
- The pharmacy offers prescription medication without requiring a prescription, lacks a U.S. address or phone number, or offers no access to a licensed pharmacist.
A mismatch is not something to resolve by relying on the service’s marketing. Contact the relevant state board through its official website and ask it to clarify the record and applicable requirements.

FDA’s consumer question is, “How can you tell if an online pharmacy is operating legally?” The practical answer for an acne prescription service is to verify both the treating professional with the appropriate licensing authority and the dispensing pharmacy with the state board of pharmacy. Neither check substitutes for the other, and state-specific rules should be confirmed with the authority responsible for the clinician’s profession and the pharmacy.
