To check whether an imported phone can use 5G on a carrier in your country, identify its exact regional model number, compare its manufacturer-listed 5G NR bands with that carrier’s deployed bands, then check the phone’s IMEI with the carrier. Band overlap shows potential radio compatibility; it does not guarantee coverage, carrier approval, or activation.
1. Find the phone’s exact model variant
Start with the complete model number, not just the phone’s family name. Manufacturers can sell variants with different radio-band support in different regions. Apple, for example, publishes 5G band information by model number and region on its iPhone cellular connectivity page.
Look in the phone’s Settings under About or About phone, check the label on its box, or search the manufacturer’s support site. If you are buying the phone, ask the seller for the precise model number and sales region before relying on a specification sheet.

Use the manufacturer’s specification page for that exact model variant. Record the 5G New Radio (NR) bands it supports, written with an “n” followed by a number—for example, n78. A product description that says only “5G” does not tell you which frequencies the handset can use.

The GSMA’s device-information documentation distinguishes 5G NR Standalone (SA) from Dual Connectivity (DC) when describing supported bands. Those labels describe network modes as well as band support, so do not treat a generic 5G label or a band list alone as confirmation that every carrier feature will work. See the GSMA TS.06 device database specification.
3. Find the bands used by the destination carrier
Choose the actual carrier you plan to use in the country where the phone will operate, then consult that carrier’s network information or ask its support team which 5G NR bands it deploys. There is no universal list of bands required for a country: deployment can differ between carriers and locations. Without a specific country, carrier, and phone model, a definitive band match cannot be stated.

4. Compare the two band lists
Check whether the phone’s supported NR bands overlap with the carrier’s deployed bands. An overlap is evidence that the phone may be able to connect to part of that carrier’s 5G network; it does not show that 5G is available everywhere you need it or that the carrier will accept the device.

5. Run the carrier’s IMEI compatibility check
For a phone you already have, dial *#06# to display its IMEI. The IMEI can help identify the handset and let a carrier check its eligibility, but it does not replace checking the exact model’s band list.
Use the destination carrier’s own checker, since results are carrier- and market-specific. For example, Verizon’s U.S. bring-your-own-device checker asks for a 15-digit IMEI and returns distinct outcomes, including compatible, locked, lost or stolen, and incompatible. Its results apply to Verizon’s service, not to other carriers or countries. See Verizon’s BYOD IMEI checker.

In India, the Department of Telecommunications’ CEIR service provides a separate IMEI verification route. CEIR says an IMEI is 15 digits, with the first eight digits known as the TAC, and explains how to display the IMEI and verify it by SMS. This can help identify a device; it is not a substitute for checking 5G bands or another country’s carrier approval. See India’s CEIR portal.
6. Confirm unlocking and carrier requirements
Before buying or activating an imported phone, ask the carrier whether the handset must be unlocked and whether it supports the carrier’s required network features and provisioning. Carriers can impose restrictions beyond radio-band overlap. Unihertz also advises checking listed bands with the provider and notes that restrictions or band limitations can affect compatibility; its compatibility information is based on user feedback, so treat it as supplementary rather than definitive. See Unihertz’s telecom compatibility information.

What each check can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it can establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer’s model-specific band list | Which 5G NR bands the specified phone variant supports. | Carrier acceptance, local coverage, unlocking, or activation eligibility. |
| Carrier’s band information | Which 5G bands that carrier deploys, where stated by the carrier. | Whether a particular imported handset will be provisioned or covered at a specific location. |
| Carrier IMEI checker | Whether the carrier’s system recognizes the handset and what compatibility outcome it returns. | Compatibility with a different carrier or market, or coverage in every location. |
| IMEI lookup or verification service | Device-identification details offered by that service; CEIR in India describes manufacturer, device type, brand, and model information. | A complete band comparison or approval by every carrier. |
Before you buy
- Get the exact regional model number from the seller.
- Match that model number to the manufacturer’s 5G NR band list.
- Compare its bands with the destination carrier’s deployed bands.
- Ask the carrier to check the phone’s IMEI and confirm unlock and provisioning requirements.
If you cannot verify the model variant or obtain a carrier eligibility result, do not treat a “5G” label or a matching band as proof the phone will work on the service you need.
