Use image search, source and provenance checks, and a careful side-by-side comparison to investigate an AI-generated cartoon. A resemblance or search result can point to evidence, but neither by itself proves that the image copied an artist or infringed copyright.
Start by preserving the image and its context
Save the cartoon in the original form available to you. Record the page or account where it appeared and the date you found it. Keep any attribution, prompt or generator details, and alternate versions or crops. If you later compare the image with possible sources, these details help make the process reproducible; they do not, on their own, establish copying.
Search for exact matches and similar images
- Try Google Lens. Search the full cartoon. Google says results may include visually similar images, pages containing the image or a similar image, and available information about an image’s creation or editing. See Google’s guide to learning more about an image.
- Try TinEye. It is designed to find image matches, including some cropped, edited, or resized versions, and includes comparison features. TinEye says it does not typically find images that are merely similar, so it complements rather than replaces a visual-similarity search. See TinEye Reverse Image Search and its FAQ.
- Search meaningful crops separately. If a full-image search returns little, try distinctive regions such as a character’s face, an unusual prop, or a particular composition. A crop may surface a match that the full image does not.
- Open and verify candidate pages. Check who posted the image, when it appeared, whether the page identifies an artist, and whether it links to an original portfolio or publication. A search engine’s earliest indexed appearance is not necessarily the work’s creation date or first publication.
These services search material available to their indexes. No result does not show that no source exists, and a result is a lead to investigate—not a finding of copying or infringement.

Place the cartoon beside several works reliably attributed to the artist. Note concrete similarities: a distinctive character design, unusual composition, recurring arrangement of shapes, signature props, line treatment, or a particular combination of expressive details. Separate broad stylistic traits and familiar genre conventions from elements that appear to match a specific work.

If you find multiple possible source works, compare them on these points:
- Is there an exact or near-exact image match, or only a broad resemblance?
- Are distinctive, work-specific expressive details present in both images?
- How reliable is the attribution, and what is the earliest verifiable publication context?
- Is there provenance or file-history information that corroborates the connection?
- What remains unknown about permissions, the image-generation process, or which jurisdiction applies?
This is a practical way to organize evidence, not a legal scoring system. No validated automated test or accuracy rate is established here for deciding whether a cartoon copied an artist’s style.

Check provenance signals, but treat missing data cautiously
Look for Content Credentials, creator-supplied metadata, or generator provenance information where available. Google notes that image metadata may provide creation or editing information but can be changed or removed. OpenAI says its Content Credentials and invisible watermarks can provide provenance signals for OpenAI-generated content; extensive changes such as cropping or compression can make a watermark undetectable. Understand what a style resemblance means under U.S. copyright law
In its 2024 Copyright and Artificial Intelligence, Part 1: Digital Replicas report, the U.S. Copyright Office states: “Copyright law’s application in this area is limited, as it does not protect artistic style as a separate element of a work.” That distinction does not mean every image that imitates a style is free of legal issues. A cartoon may also reproduce protectable expression from an identifiable work, or raise issues outside copyright. Whether it does so depends on the works and facts; resemblance alone does not settle the question.
This legal discussion is U.S.-specific. The relevant law may differ elsewhere, and the evidence here does not determine whether any particular cartoon infringes or whether an artist’s signature is genuine.

Keep copyrightability of the AI output separate from copying
Whether a human may claim copyright in an AI-assisted output is a different question from whether that output copied someone else’s work. In its January 29, 2025 release about Part 2 of its report, the Copyright Office said: “The Office confirms that the use of AI to assist in the process of creation or the inclusion of AI-generated material in a larger human-generated work does not bar copyrightability.” The Office’s account focuses on whether a human determined sufficient expressive elements, including through human-authored material perceptible in the output or creative arrangement or modification. Providing prompts alone is not enough to establish human authorship of all generated expression. See the Part 2 release.

Document findings and choose careful language
Keep a record of the original source, search tools and terms, candidate links, dates, and the particular visual features you compared. Describe what the evidence shows rather than making a categorical accusation: for example, “image search found a close match” or “the cartoon shares these identifiable features with the artist’s work.” For a consequential dispute, preserve the files and consult a lawyer familiar with the relevant jurisdiction.
