Before paying, verify who is selling the license, confirm it covers Windows 11 Pro, and ask for purchase evidence that fits the way it is being sold. Keep the receipt and any key, digital confirmation, or Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Do not rely on an activation screenshot: Microsoft says activation does not establish that a copy is genuine.
What to check before you pay
- Verify the seller. Prefer Microsoft or a retailer whose business identity and reputation you can independently establish. Microsoft calls buying from Microsoft or a store you know and trust the safest option. Check the seller’s legal or business identity, return terms, and willingness to provide an itemized order confirmation. Microsoft’s guidance does not provide a current directory of authorized sellers, so do not assume a marketplace listing or seller is authorized without verifying it. - Confirm the edition. Ask explicitly whether the license is for Windows 11 Pro. A Windows Home license does not license Pro; Microsoft’s activation guidance explains that the installed edition must match the license or be upgraded. - Ask what evidence comes with this specific sale. A legitimate license does not always come as a printed product key. The expected evidence depends on whether you are buying a boxed copy, a digital purchase, or a computer with Windows already installed; the route-by-route details are below.
- Get the terms and transaction in writing. Save the listing or quote, itemized confirmation, seller identity, return terms, and any license evidence supplied. If a key is later rejected or the license cannot be transferred or reactivated as expected, these records help you pursue the seller’s stated remedy.
What evidence should you receive for each purchase type?

Microsoft explains where product keys may appear and when a digital license is used in its Windows activation guidance. A key is not required for every legitimate purchase: the license may instead be digital.
Why activation does not prove a license is genuine
Activation is a technical step that associates a product key or digital entitlement with a device’s hardware configuration. Microsoft explicitly says that activation does not evaluate the copy’s authenticity and does not guarantee that Windows is genuine. A key can activate yet still be improperly sourced or used on more devices than its license permits. An activation screenshot is therefore not a substitute for a seller you can verify and a documented purchase.

If Windows is already installed, check its activation status
On the PC, open Settings > System > Activation. This page shows whether Windows is activated and which activation method is in use. Treat it as an operational status check, not proof of a legitimate sale: it cannot confirm the seller’s authority, the license’s provenance, or whether the license terms were followed.
Microsoft says a digital license linked to a Microsoft account can help reactivate Windows through the Activation troubleshooter after a significant hardware change, such as replacing a motherboard. Before you commit: a practical decision check
- Can you identify the seller as a real business or a trusted retailer, and find clear return terms?
- Does the offer explicitly cover Windows 11 Pro rather than Home?
- Can the seller explain whether the license is retail, digital, preinstalled, refurbished-PC, or tied to an existing device?
- Will you receive route-appropriate evidence, such as a receipt and key, Microsoft Store confirmation, or PC COA/license documentation?
- For a used PC, can the seller provide the original evidence and explain that the license belongs with that device?
If key evidence is missing, the seller cannot clearly identify the license route, or the seller asks you to treat activation as the only proof, pause the purchase. Microsoft’s safest-option guidance is to buy from Microsoft or a store you know and trust; see About Genuine Windows.
