Before starting, stopping, or changing a vitamin or other supplement during cancer treatment, show the exact product label to your oncologist or oncology pharmacist and ask them to check it against your treatment plan. The ingredients, dose, and specific cancer medicines all matter; a general online interaction checker cannot clear an individual regimen.
What to give your cancer care team
Share every supplement you already take and any product you are considering, ideally before treatment starts or changes. Include multivitamins, single vitamins, minerals, herbs, teas, and concentrated extracts, along with prescription and over-the-counter medicines.
Bring the container or a clear photo of the full label. Record the brand, formulation, ingredients, dose, how often you take it, and why you use it. Product formulations can vary, and ingredients may not always match what is claimed on the label, so the product name alone may not identify what you are taking. See the National Cancer Institute’s health professional PDQ on cancer therapy interactions.

A checklist to prepare
- List all cancer medicines and treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, and oral targeted therapy.
- Add all prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, minerals, herbs, teas, and extracts.
- For each supplement, note its full name, brand, formulation, ingredients, dose, frequency, and reason for use.
- Bring the original container or a readable label photo to the appointment.
Questions to ask about the combination
Ask the oncologist or oncology pharmacist to review the exact product against the medicines and treatment modalities in your current plan. You can ask: “Could this product change how any of my cancer medicines work or affect side effects? Should I avoid it, adjust it, or monitor anything?”

Also ask whether the answer changes with treatment timing or a new regimen. An interaction noted for one medicine does not automatically apply to every cancer treatment. Do not start, stop, or change a prescribed treatment or supplement solely because of general online information. The American Cancer Society’s chemotherapy guidance advises checking with a doctor before taking any vitamin during chemotherapy, even a multivitamin.
Why a supplement can matter
Supplements can affect how cancer drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, or eliminated. The National Cancer Institute describes possible effects involving drug-metabolizing enzymes, including cytochrome P450, and transport proteins such as P-glycoprotein. Whether that matters depends on the particular supplement and cancer medicine; the NCI notes that evidence on interactions is limited overall, though specific interactions and adverse reactions have been reported.

Examples are not universal rules
St. John’s wort illustrates why it is important to disclose herbal products: the NCI reports clinical evidence that it can reduce exposure to certain anticancer drugs, including imatinib and docetaxel, and notes a possible interaction with ixabepilone based on its label. This does not show that every vitamin interacts with those drugs, or that St. John’s wort interacts with every cancer medicine.

Some vitamin findings come from animal studies rather than people. The NCI professional summary describes a rat study in which vitamins A, E, D3, and C changed imatinib bioavailability, and a mouse-model study involving vitamin C and bortezomib. Those findings do not establish the same effects in human patients and should not be used as personal treatment instructions.

Use particular care with antioxidant supplements during chemotherapy or radiation
The NCI patient summary reports studies in which antioxidant supplements taken during chemotherapy or radiation were associated with a lower chance of remaining cancer-free. Its professional summary describes limited evidence, including studies in breast cancer patients that found worse outcomes associated with antioxidant supplement use during treatment, and says more research is needed. These group-level findings do not prove that every antioxidant causes harm in every patient or predict an individual outcome. Discuss the exact product and treatment with the care team.
This discussion concerns dietary supplements and particular treatment combinations; it is not a reason to assume that ordinary vitamin-containing foods should be avoided. Ask the care team about a specific food or drink if you are concerned, since some food-drug interactions are also treatment-specific. The NCI also states that the FDA has not approved antioxidants as a treatment for cancer or another medical condition, and that there is no proof that a vitamin, mineral, supplement, herb, or special diet can slow, cure, or prevent cancer from returning. See NCI’s patient guide to cancer therapy interactions and Diets, Supplements, and Cancer.

Why general lists cannot confirm that a product is safe
There is no single universal interaction list that can certify every vitamin supplement as safe or unsafe for every cancer treatment. A check needs to account for the actual product and dose, the specific medicines and treatment plan, any evidence for that combination, and whether a nutritional benefit or monitoring is relevant for the patient. The NCI’s patient resource summarizes the practical question as whether a therapy will affect conventional treatment; the answer belongs with the treating team reviewing the patient’s regimen.
