Check the exact tool model against its maker’s manual or official compatibility list. Unless the tool maker explicitly names your Makita battery platform and model—and any required adapter—treat compatibility as unverified. A matching voltage or a battery that slides into the tool does not prove it will work properly.
What to check before using a Makita battery in another brand’s tool
- Identify the tool. Record its manufacturer and full model number from the label or manual.
- Identify the battery. Note whether it is CXT, LXT, or XGT, along with its full battery model number. Capacity alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
- Check the tool maker’s documentation. Search the manual, official product page, or compatibility list for the exact battery platform and model. Check whether the maker specifies an adapter, too.
- Ask if the documentation is silent. Contact the tool manufacturer and request confirmation for the exact tool, battery, and adapter combination. Until it confirms, consider compatibility unverified.
Keep two questions separate: Does the battery physically fit? and Does the tool maker specify that this battery is electrically, electronically, and operationally compatible? Only documentation or confirmation from the tool maker answers the second.
What Makita’s platform guidance does—and does not—confirm
Makita U.S.A.’s battery compatibility FAQ says its batteries are compatible within their respective Makita platforms. It identifies these boundaries:

These are Makita-platform claims; they do not certify a battery for an unnamed third-party tool. Makita’s U.S. LXT system page advertises more than 350 LXT products, and its XGT page advertises more than 170 XGT products. Those are Makita’s own system-page counts, not counts of compatible tools from other brands. Product names and configurations may differ outside the U.S.

Why voltage and physical fit are not enough
A matching voltage label or connector shape does not establish electrical, electronic, or operating compatibility. Makita says genuine lithium-ion batteries use internal electronic circuitry to monitor battery conditions when used with Makita tools and chargers. The company warns that a non-genuine or altered battery can defeat electronic communication between the battery and a Makita tool or charger. That is a reason to seek model-specific confirmation—not proof that a particular third-party combination will fail.
Makita’s compatibility guidance does not identify or approve a generic adapter for arbitrary third-party tools. Do not treat a marketplace listing, a similar-looking connector, or an anecdote as equivalent to confirmation from the tool maker.

Adapters are for documented products and purposes
Makita describes specific accessories for specific uses. For example, its information for the SK106GDZ laser says its power connector port can use an 18V LXT battery as an alternate power source with the ADP05 Power Source Adapter and adapter cord, sold separately. This is a documented path for that named Makita product—not a general cross-brand solution.
Makita also says its ADP10 adapter with the DC40RA charger can rapid-charge 18V LXT batteries. That is a charger-and-battery use case; it does not make an XGT battery compatible with an LXT tool, or the reverse.

Understand the scope of Makita’s safety and warranty warning
Makita warns that using non-genuine or altered batteries with Makita tools may defeat electronic communication and may affect tool and charger warranties and UL/CSA approval. The company also lists potential risks including bursting, fire, injury, property damage, and unknown performance. Its compatibility FAQ and genuine-parts information frame these warnings around non-genuine or altered batteries used with Makita tools. They do not establish that every third-party tool used with a genuine Makita battery is unsafe, compatible, or incompatible.
Makita says it does not approve non-genuine lithium-ion batteries marketed for use in Makita cordless tools. That is the company’s position on batteries for its own tools, not independent testing of every third-party product and not confirmation that a genuine Makita battery works in another brand’s tool.

Decide what to do when the tool maker gives no answer
- If the manual or official compatibility list names your exact battery and any required adapter, follow the maker’s stated conditions.
- If the documentation names only a platform but not your battery model or adapter, ask the tool maker to clarify the exact combination.
- If the maker does not confirm compatibility, do not use a test run to substitute for documentation; treat the combination as unverified.
- Do not buy a battery or adapter on the assumption that it will make an undocumented combination work.
Without the third-party tool’s make and model, battery model, and adapter details, official Makita guidance cannot determine whether that particular combination is compatible.
