Open the exact game’s current Steam store page and check its access wording, any Free Weekend deadline, and any separate purchase price. “Free to Play” means the game is free to download and play; a “Free Weekend” notice with a “Play for free until” time describes a limited promotion, not proof of permanent access.
Check the game’s current Steam store page
- Open the listing for the exact game. Don’t rely on a search snippet, old screenshot, or Steam’s general Free to Play category page; prices and promotions can change.
- Read the access label. A Free to Play listing indicates the game is ordinarily available to download and play without charge.
- Look for a Free Weekend notice and its deadline. Wording such as “Play for free until” followed by a date and time signals a limited play offer. Use the date and time shown on the live listing, not an old example.
- Check for a purchase price separately. A full or discounted price shown alongside the Free Weekend notice is an offer to buy the game, separate from the temporary play period.
Steam’s [store] is the place to verify the current label and offer terms for a specific title.

What “Free to Play” means on Steam
Steam Support defines free-to-play games as “available to download for free and can be played without a subscription or a credit card.” That describes access to play; it does not mean every game has the same rules or monetization. If a game supports in-game purchases, Steam Wallet funds can be used to buy supported items or content, but optional purchases are not a requirement to play a Free to Play game.
See Steam’s [Free to play games on Steam] FAQ for the definition and Wallet-purchase detail.

What “Free Weekend” means
A Free Weekend notice paired with a “Play for free until” deadline indicates that play is being offered for a limited time. If a price appears beside that notice, it is a separate purchase option for continuing access; playing during the promotion is not itself evidence that you own the game permanently.
Check the current offer on the game’s page before deciding what happens after the event. The available Steam information does not establish one universal rule for every game’s post-promotion access or for whether progress is retained, so don’t assume either outcome.
