To tell whether a Steam game deal is genuinely good, compare the price of the exact edition you want with its recorded price history in your own Steam currency—not just the sale badge or discount percentage. Check the tracker’s coverage, look for a better-value package or bundle, and confirm the current amount on Steam before buying.
Why the discount badge is not enough
A large discount can still leave a game above prices it reached in earlier sales. SteamDB says its live deal rating is based on the current discount percentage, not the game’s price history. Treat the badge as a description of the discount from the listed price, not proof that today’s amount is unusually low. SteamDB’s price page provides the current deal and historical context.

There is no universal discount percentage that makes every Steam deal worthwhile. A better judgment combines the current price, the game’s past prices, the content included, and what you are personally willing to pay.
How to compare today’s price with price history
- Search for the game on SteamDB and open its price table or graph. SteamDB says its pages include price histories for games, bundles, and packages. Its FAQ explains the tracker’s features.
- Set or select the region and currency that match your Steam store. Compare amounts in that currency rather than assuming a price in another region is available to you.
- Find the current price and compare it with earlier sale prices shown on the graph. Look for whether previous discounts were lower, similar, or higher—and how often the price reached those levels.
- Read the displayed low as the lowest price captured during the tracker’s recording window, not automatically as the game’s all-time low.
- Open the game’s Steam store page and verify the current price and package before checkout.
SteamDB says its historical prices for the US, UK, and EU before 2016 come from IsThereAnyDeal, so older history may have a different source from more recent records. SteamDB’s price-change FAQ describes that historical data arrangement.

Make sure you are comparing the right edition
A game may be sold in multiple packages, editions, or bundles, and they may contain different content. Check that the history you are viewing corresponds to the item you plan to buy. A lower price for a base game does not establish that a deluxe edition is a better deal, and a bundle’s headline price is useful only if its contents are useful to you.
- Compare the package names and included content, not just the game title.
- Check whether a bundle includes items you already own; that can affect its value to you.
- SteamDB advises checking for a cheaper bundle when a discount appears inconsistent. Its bundle tools can help identify related offers. SteamDB’s bundle listings provide a way to explore them.
Use your own Steam region and currency
Steam prices can vary by currency and store region. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says partners manage product prices and discounts, and that Steam supports pricing in 37 currencies. Valve’s currency documentation explains the platform’s supported currencies and pricing setup.

SteamDB describes its own price-history coverage as 41 currencies; that is a tracker coverage figure, not Valve’s official count of Steam currencies. SteamDB’s FAQ gives its figure. For your decision, use the price shown in your own Steam store and verify it on Steam before purchase; a cross-region price is not necessarily available in your region.

SteamDB says publishers choose discounts and it cannot know which specific games, prices, or discounts will appear in an upcoming sale. Use history to inform a decision, not as a forecast or promise that a lower price will return. SteamDB’s sale FAQ explains this limitation.

How much to trust a price tracker
Price-history data is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee. SteamDB says its data is provided as-is and does not guarantee accuracy, completeness, or timeliness. Check the live Steam listing before buying, especially if the tracker’s price or package details do not match what you see at checkout. SteamDB’s terms describe its data limitations.
