Do not trust the account name, logo, verification badge, caller ID, or an official-looking message by itself. The safest test is independent verification: pause, avoid links and phone numbers in the unexpected message, find the brand’s contact details through a website or channel you locate yourself, and ask whether the account, message, or offer is genuine.
This process also applies to social-media shopping ads. Check who is actually selling, compare the price with other sellers, and use a payment method that gives you a dispute route. If the account is impersonating a business, report it to the platform and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If your own account appears compromised, use the platform’s account-recovery process instead of treating it as an ordinary impersonation report.
The reliable test: stop and verify through a known-good route
An unexpected direct message, comment, advertisement, call, text, or email can look exactly like it came from a company you know. It might use the brand’s colors, product images, support language, or a claim that your account has a problem. Those details are claims of identity, not proof of identity.
Use this order of operations:
- Pause. Do not let a deadline, prize, account warning, or unusually cheap offer force an immediate decision.
- Do not use the message’s link or phone number. A link can lead to a look-alike site, and a supplied number can connect you to the impersonator.
- Find the business independently. Type the company’s known web address yourself, use a bookmark you already trust, or use established contact information from a statement, receipt, or product packaging.
- Ask through that independent channel. Give the company the account handle, message wording, advertisement, or order details and ask whether it is theirs.
- For an advertisement, investigate the seller and the price before paying. The brand shown in the creative may not be the company that receives your money.
- Report the impersonation. Use the social platform’s reporting tools and submit a report to the FTC.
The FTC’s April 2025 consumer alert says people reported nearly $3 billion in losses to impersonators during 2024. That figure covers impersonation scams broadly; it is not a measurement of social-media brand impersonation alone. It does show why a familiar identity should be treated as something to check, not something to assume.

Why familiar branding is not authentication
Impersonators borrow a legitimate company’s name, logo, product photographs, and tone because recognition lowers your guard. A message may say that your account will be closed, that you won a prize, or that a payment failed. A social ad may promise a major discount on a well-known product. In each case, the requested action—clicking, calling, paying, or disclosing information—is the important risk.
Caller ID and other displayed identity information can also be falsified. The number or profile shown on your screen does not establish who is behind the contact. Likewise, a high follower count, polished graphics, or a verification badge should be considered signals to evaluate, not independent confirmation. Platform badge rules and meanings change, and the available guidance here does not establish that any badge guarantees authenticity.
Use the right response for each situation

Step-by-step verification for a message or direct contact
1. Pause before touching the requested action
Read the message without replying. Scammers often create a short decision window: a problem must be fixed immediately, a prize will expire, or a discount ends in minutes. Urgency is a reason to verify, not a reason to skip verification.

The FTC’s business-impersonation guidance specifically says not to click links in an unexpected call, email, text, or social-media message—even when it appears to come from a business you know.
2. Preserve enough information to check the claim
Record the account handle, profile URL as displayed in the app, message text, date and time, advertisement, and any order or reference number. A screenshot can help you report the account later. Do not forward a malicious link to other people as a warning; describe it or share a screenshot instead.
3. Find the brand without using the message
Open a browser or app separately. Type the company’s web address yourself if you know it, use a bookmark saved before the message arrived, or consult an independent document such as a previous invoice or the back of a product. Look for a support or contact route that the company has established outside the suspicious conversation.

Do not search for the sender’s phone number and assume the first result is genuine. Search results can contain advertisements, copied pages, or other impersonation attempts. The goal is to reach contact information you can verify independently of the message.

4. Ask the business to confirm the exact account or message
Contact support through the independently found route. Provide the precise social handle, the wording of the request, and the advertisement or offer. Ask whether the account is operated by the company, whether the representative contacted you, and whether the promotion is valid.
A genuine business may not be able to discuss another customer’s account, but it can usually tell you whether a public handle, campaign, or support procedure belongs to it. Keep the conversation on the known-good channel; do not allow the suspicious sender to become your source of confirmation.
5. Decide only after confirmation
If the company cannot confirm the contact, treat it as fraudulent. Do not continue negotiating with the sender or try a smaller payment “to test” the offer. Block or mute the account after saving the information needed for a report.

Compare the exact handle, spelling, punctuation, and account link with the handle published on a brand website or another channel you already know. Impersonators often choose a nearly identical name or add a word, number, underscore, or extra character. A matching logo is easy to copy, so it is supporting context only.

Profile links and contact details
Consider whether the profile points to the same web address that the brand publishes independently. A link that redirects to a different domain, uses a misspelling, or asks you to log in again deserves caution. Do not sign in merely to test the link; verify the destination through the company’s known-good contact route.
Posts, replies, and behavior
Look for whether the account’s public activity is consistent with the brand’s normal communication, but remember that a copied feed can look convincing. Sudden giveaways, repeated requests to move to private chat, pressure to pay, or replies that ask for passwords and security codes are reasons to stop. Do not treat comments from other accounts as proof; those accounts can be coordinated or fake.
Verification badges
A badge may indicate that a platform has applied a particular status under its current rules, but the available FTC guidance does not provide a universal badge standard or say that a badge guarantees a business relationship. Check what the specific platform currently says its badge means, and still verify the account through the brand’s independently published contact information.

How to vet a social-media advertisement or shopping offer
A social ad can be the first step in a scam even when the creative shows a real company and a genuine product. The FTC warns that a click may take you to a fake site designed to steal money or information, and a buyer may receive a counterfeit item or nothing at all.

Compare the offer before clicking Buy
Search for the product independently and compare prices, shipping, warranty, and return terms. The FTC’s August 2025 warning about low-priced brand-name goods recommends researching the seller and checking prices at other places. A low price is not proof of fraud, but a large unexplained difference increases the risk that the product, seller, or site is not what the ad implies.
Check who receives the payment
The brand shown in an ad may be only a copied identity. Read the merchant name at checkout and on the payment confirmation. If the seller will accept only gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or a payment app, walk away. The FTC advises avoiding those demands because they make recovery difficult.

Prefer a payment method with a dispute route
If you decide to buy after independent checks, the FTC says a credit card may give you a way to dispute a charge when the product does not arrive or is not as described. Keep the advertisement, receipt, promised delivery date, and all correspondence so the card issuer has a clear record if you need to challenge the transaction.
Warning signs that should end the interaction
- The contact is unexpected and claims that your account, order, or reward requires immediate action.
- The sender asks you to click a link, call a supplied number, install software, or continue on a different channel.
- You are asked for a password, one-time verification code, full payment-card details, identity documents, or other sensitive information.
- The sender demands payment by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or a payment app.
- An advertisement promises an unusually large discount on a recognizable brand and will not clearly identify the seller.
- The account’s handle differs subtly from the brand’s independently published handle.
- The sender refuses to let you verify through the brand’s official contact route or insists that the conversation stay secret.
Any one sign can justify stopping. You do not need to prove fraud before declining a request.

You clicked but did not submit information
Close the page and do not return through the message. If the page asked you to download a file or install an app, do not do so. Contact the brand independently if you need to check the underlying account or order claim. Save the message and account details for a report.
You entered a password or security code
Use the affected service’s genuine account-recovery page, reached independently rather than through the message. Change the password from that known-good route and review the account for unfamiliar activity. Never give a one-time code to a person who contacted you unexpectedly; possession of the code can allow an attacker to bypass a login control.
You paid for an item or sent money
Contact the payment provider promptly using the number or website on your card, statement, or established account—not information supplied by the seller’s message. Ask what dispute or fraud process applies. For a credit-card purchase, explain if the product never arrived or was not as described and provide your records.
Your account sent messages you did not write
Treat this as a possible hack. The FTC’s recovery guidance points people to the provider’s account-recovery instructions. After regaining access, review recent sessions and messages, change credentials through the provider, and warn contacts through a separate channel that they should ignore suspicious messages from the account.

Reporting an impersonator or scam
Report the profile, post, advertisement, or message to the social platform using its current in-app reporting option. Include the account handle, screenshots, the requested action, and any payment destination. Platform menus vary, so use the help or safety instructions shown in your current app rather than relying on an old step-by-step article.
Also report suspected impersonation scams to the FTC. Reporting creates a record that can help identify patterns and support enforcement, even when you did not lose money. If you paid or shared information, tell the relevant bank, card issuer, payment provider, or account provider as soon as possible.
Do not report your own hacked account as though it were an unrelated impersonator. Follow the provider’s recovery process first; then report messages or profiles that remain malicious.

“Your account will be closed today”
A direct message uses a familiar logo and asks you to click a support link. Do not click it. Open the brand’s site independently, sign in only through the address you already trust, or contact support using established details. Ask whether there is an account warning. If support cannot confirm the message, report and block the sender.
“You won a brand prize”
The account asks for a small shipping payment and personal details. The prize claim is not authenticated by the logo or account name. Verify the promotion through the brand’s independently found contact route. If the promotion is not confirmed, provide nothing and report it.
“A famous product is 80 percent off”
The advertisement leads to a store with an unfamiliar merchant name. Research that merchant separately, compare the product’s price at established sellers, read the payment options, and confirm who will appear on your card statement. If the seller insists on irreversible payment methods or cannot explain its relationship to the brand, do not buy.
“Messages are being sent from my account”
This points to possible compromise of your account rather than a stranger impersonating the brand. Use the platform’s account-recovery instructions, change credentials through the genuine provider, and notify contacts not to follow recent requests.

The practical standard is not certainty from a single visual cue. It is agreement between independently obtained evidence and the brand’s own confirmation. When that confirmation is unavailable, decline the request.
