Before you pay, test the phone with an active SIM from a different carrier, then ask the carrier that sold or last serviced it to confirm its SIM-unlock status using the IMEI. A successful test is useful evidence, but it does not guarantee compatibility with your carrier’s exact network or 5G service.
What “carrier-unlocked” means—and what it does not
A SIM-unlocked phone is not restricted to the carrier that sold it. It can use another provider’s service if the phone’s model is compatible with that provider. Google says Pixel phones bought from the Google Store are unlocked; a phone bought from a mobile provider may be SIM-locked. Google also notes that not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later models work on every 5G network.
Check three separate things before buying:
- SIM/carrier lock: Is the phone restricted to its original carrier?
- Network compatibility: Does this exact model support the destination carrier’s bands, network generation and services?
- Account and device eligibility: Is the phone paid off and eligible for release, and is it clear of restrictions in the original carrier’s records?
This guide focuses on the first question. A phone can be unlocked but still fail the other two. T-Mobile’s BYOD IMEI check addresses lock status and compatibility, while AT&T publishes separate unlock conditions for eligible devices.

How to check before paying
1. Test with an active SIM from another carrier
- Ask the seller’s permission to test the phone before you pay. Use an active SIM from a carrier different from the one that sold or last serviced the device.
- For a physical SIM, eject the tray with a SIM tool, insert the other carrier’s SIM, and restart the phone if needed. Google explains how to install a physical SIM in a Pixel.
- Check that the phone recognizes the SIM and registers on the network. Try placing a call or using mobile data.
A prompt for a network unlock code or a message that the phone is network-locked is a warning sign. Do not mistake a SIM PIN prompt for a carrier lock: the PIN protects the SIM card itself. Samsung’s explanation of these prompts is on its UK support site, so labels and procedures can vary by country and model.

A failed test alone does not prove the phone is locked. The SIM may be inactive, damaged, unsupported or improperly provisioned. A successful test is strong practical evidence, but still check compatibility with the exact model and intended carrier.
2. Get confirmation from the original carrier
Ask the seller to contact the carrier that sold or last serviced the phone and request explicit confirmation that the device is SIM-unlocked. Use the IMEI shown in the phone’s Settings/About screen, and make sure it matches the handset being sold. T-Mobile directs BYOD customers to an IMEI check for lock status and compatibility; AT&T provides its own unlock guidance and eligibility requirements. Carrier policies can change, so use the carrier’s current official checker or support channel.

Ask for a lock-status confirmation, not just a general compatibility result. If the seller will not permit a test or carrier confirmation, treat the status as unverified and make the purchase conditional on written confirmation or a return option.

Give your destination carrier the exact model number and IMEI. Ask whether the phone supports the service you need, including 5G or eSIM if relevant. An unlocked phone is not necessarily compatible with every carrier or network feature; Google specifically cautions that Pixel model support varies across 5G networks.

4. Keep Pixel bootloader settings out of the test
On a Pixel, the bootloader’s “OEM unlocking” setting is about allowing changes to device software and has security implications. It is not a SIM/carrier-lock check. Google documents bootloader state separately from SIM unlocking; do not enable OEM unlocking to find out whether the phone can use another carrier.
What to check on each phone brand
Samsung Galaxy
Insert an active SIM from a different carrier and look for a network-lock or unlock-code prompt. Samsung’s Gulf support guidance describes restarting with the new SIM to verify a successful network unlock. Because Samsung’s regional support pages may not match every US model or carrier menu, confirm status with the original carrier as well.

Google Pixel
Google says Pixels sold through the Google Store are unlocked. Carrier-sold and used Pixels need an individual check. Google says a SIM-locked device may work only with the provider that sold it until that provider removes the lock or the contract ends. Ask the seller to contact that provider and, if possible, test with another carrier’s active SIM.
Questions to ask the seller
- “Can we test it with an active SIM from a different carrier before I pay?”
- “Which carrier originally sold or financed the phone?”
- “Can you confirm with that carrier, using this IMEI, that the phone is SIM-unlocked?”
- “Has the phone been paid off, and is it eligible for use on the carrier I plan to use?”
- “What is the exact model number, and can my intended carrier confirm compatibility?”

- Whether the exact model is compatible with your destination carrier.
- Whether the device is eligible and clear in the original carrier’s records, including any financing restrictions.
- Whether you can return it if the seller’s claims do not check out.
A listing’s wording is not proof that the particular phone is unlocked. Google Store documentation also does not certify third-party marketplace inventory.
