A sale price is a good deal only if the exact item’s total cost is favorable compared with realistic alternatives—and the offer’s conditions work for you. Check the product variant, compare prices at other sellers and against reliable price history when available, add required costs, and inspect eligibility, condition, and return terms. A large discount label alone does not prove you are saving.
1. Confirm you are comparing the same item
Write down the manufacturer, model number, size, color, condition, and what is included. Compare matching configurations, not just products that look alike. An older model, smaller package, refurbished unit, or bundle with different accessories may not be equivalent to the listing you are considering. The Federal Trade Commission’s online shopping advice recommends recording identifying details such as model and item number before comparison shopping.
2. Check whether the reference price is meaningful
A percentage-off claim describes a comparison with a reference amount; it does not establish that the reference amount is a useful measure of savings. Do not treat MSRP, a “was” price, or a strikethrough price as conclusive. The FTC says the same truthfulness standards apply to sale-price and price-comparison claims, and points businesses to its Advertising FAQs and Guides Against Deceptive Pricing. For shoppers, the practical check is to look at the exact item’s alternatives rather than relying on the label. There is no universal lookback period or discount percentage that makes every offer a good deal.

3. Compare the total amount you will pay
Compare what it will cost to obtain the item, not just the advertised item price. Include required shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other applicable fees. Then read the terms to see whether the displayed price requires a coupon, membership, financing, buying multiple items, or an add-on you do not want. The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends calculating total cost and checking offer terms.

For example, an offer with a lower item price may cost more after delivery charges, or may only be available to members. Compare the amount you personally qualify to pay, with the same required costs included.
Vehicle offers are a category-specific case
For U.S. vehicle advertising, FTC staff FAQs published in September 2026 say: “The advertised price must be the actual price any consumer can walk in and pay.” The FAQs address dealer-required fees, government-required charges, and conditional discounts in the context of auto advertising. 4. Normalize package sizes with unit pricing
When products come in different sizes or quantities, compare their cost on the same meaningful basis—such as cost per ounce, count, foot, or square foot. Use:
Unit price = total item price ÷ quantity in the package

For example, divide each package’s item price by its stated quantity, then compare the resulting cost per the same unit. Keep the product and quality comparable; a lower unit price is not decisive if the items differ materially. NIST’s 2025 Unit Pricing Guide describes unit pricing as a way to compare brands and package sizes, including in retail and e-commerce, and recommends consistent, meaningful units.
5. Check seller, condition, and what is included
Confirm whether the offer is sold by the retailer or a third-party seller, who fulfills it, and whether the item is available on the delivery terms you need. Verify whether it is new, used, refurbished, close-out, or clearance, and check the included accessories or services. A lower price on a different condition or bundle is not a direct comparison. The FTC notes that terms such as “refurbished” or “clearance” can indicate a different product condition or different terms in its online shopping advice.

6. Read return and warranty terms before deciding
Check the return deadline, who pays return shipping, any restocking fee, and the warranty coverage. Sale and clearance merchandise may have different return or refund policies, so do not assume the standard policy applies. These terms affect the value of an offer, particularly if you are uncertain about fit, compatibility, or condition. The FTC’s consumer guidance on online shopping advises checking return policies and product terms.
7. Use price history and alerts as context
When reliable history is available for the exact model and variant, compare today’s price with its observed prices over time. Also check a few sellers for the same item. Comparison sites can help, but verify that their listings match and review seller and offer details; a similar-looking result may be another size, version, or condition. The FTC notes that some comparison sites offer price alerts: “Some sites let you sign up to get price alerts when prices change.” See its online shopping advice.

A price alert or waiting for more observations can help when the purchase is not urgent and the comparison is inconclusive. It is a way to gather context, not a promise that the price will fall. Available price-history coverage may also be incomplete or may not distinguish every variant, so use it alongside current seller comparisons rather than as a verdict by itself.
8. Decide whether the deal is good for you
- Buy: The item matches your need, the exact variant is comparable, the total payable price is favorable against realistic alternatives, and the terms are acceptable.
- Wait or set an alert: The purchase is not urgent and you need more price observations or time to compare.
- Compare elsewhere: The discount depends on conditions you do not meet, the seller or item differs, or required costs and return terms make the offer less attractive.
