To check whether your PS5 may qualify for Sony warranty service, confirm where it was purchased, compare its original purchase date with the warranty terms for that market, and locate the original proof of purchase. Then check the console’s serial number, the reported fault, and any repair history against local exclusions before opening a request through Sony’s official service channel. Sony makes the final decision; the warranty period and service process vary by market.
1. Identify the market where the PS5 was purchased
Start with the receipt or invoice and establish the country or territory of sale. The applicable terms generally depend on that market, not simply where you live now. Sony’s US warranty, for example, says it is valid only in the United States and Canada. If your console was bought in one region and you want service in another, ask Sony which terms and service route apply to that specific product before shipping it.
Warranty terms are regional rather than universal. These official examples show why you should check the terms for the console’s place of purchase:

| United States and Canada | Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC states one year from original purchase; its warranty is territorially limited to the United States and Canada. | For US warranty service, Sony requires a dated bill of sale or retailer receipt. Service requests go through PlayStation Repairs for return authorization and shipping instructions. Sony US/Canada PS5 warranty |
| EEA and territories listed in Sony’s document | Sony’s EEA guarantee describes one year from original purchase. | Proof should identify the purchase date and retailer. See the listed territories and conditions in Sony’s EEA warranty terms. |
| Latin America example | The Guatemala-hosted warranty document applies to products marketed by authorized entities in its named Latin American countries; coverage is local to the country of purchase. | It requires valid purchase documentation and describes local procedures and exceptions. Check the applicable country details in Sony’s Latin American warranty document. |
| Malaysia | Sony lists one year from the invoice date. | Sony asks repair customers to bring the original invoice, packaging, and defective item. See Sony Malaysia warranty support. |
| Japan | Sony describes one year from purchase of a new console. | Proof should show the purchase date, store name, and product name. See Sony Japan warranty support. |
These are examples, not a substitute for the terms applying to your PS5. Confirm the relevant country, covered product, and service rules on Sony’s local support site.

2. Compare the purchase date with the local warranty period
Use the original purchase date shown on your proof of purchase and compare it with the start date and duration in the applicable local terms. Do not assume the US one-year period applies worldwide: Sony’s US/Canada terms state one year from original purchase, while Malaysia’s example counts one year from the invoice date. The EEA and Japan examples also describe one-year periods, but under their own regional terms.
If you cannot establish the purchase date, or the document has no date, contact Sony support to ask what other evidence it will accept. Do not rely on the console’s registration status as a substitute: Sony’s US warranty says its warranty is the same whether or not the product is registered.

3. Find the original proof of purchase
Keep the original receipt, invoice, or bill of sale available. Sony’s requirements differ by market, so check that your document includes the information required locally. For example, US service requires a dated bill of sale or retailer receipt; Sony’s EEA terms call for original proof showing the purchase date and retailer; and Japan’s support terms specify the purchase date, store name, and product name.
Sony’s US warranty states: “A VALID PROOF OF PURCHASE IN THE FORM OF A BILL OF SALE OR RECEIPT FROM A RETAILER WITH THE DATE OF THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE MUST BE PRESENTED TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE.” This statement applies to the US warranty terms; check the proof requirements for your own market.

4. Check the serial number, fault, and repair history
Before requesting service, inspect the console’s serial number and consider whether the problem appears to be a qualifying defect or may fall under an exclusion. Warranty coverage generally concerns qualifying defects in materials or workmanship, but the terms and exclusions vary locally. Sony makes the eligibility decision after reviewing the case.
- Serial number: Sony’s US terms list an altered, defaced, or removed serial number among exclusions. The EEA terms also allow rejection in cases involving a damaged or removed serial number.
- Damage and use: US terms exclude specified damage involving misuse, accidents, unauthorized peripherals, and causes unrelated to defective materials or workmanship.
- Opening or repairs: Unauthorized opening or service can affect coverage under US terms. The EEA terms also identify certain damage associated with opening or unauthorized repair as grounds for rejection.
- Fault description: Describe what happens accurately and include relevant circumstances. Do not assume a symptom alone proves that the cause is covered.
These examples are not a complete list of exclusions for every country. Read the local terms and give Sony an accurate account of the console’s condition and repair history.

5. Start a request through Sony’s official service route
Once you have the purchase details and proof, use the official PlayStation support or repair route for the market where the PS5 was sold. In the United States, Sony directs owners to PlayStation Repairs to request return authorization and shipping instructions. In other regions, follow the local support process. Sony’s Latin American document, for example, directs consumers to local authorized centers or customer service, with country-specific exceptions.

6. Prepare the PS5 before taking it in or shipping it
Protect your data and remove items Sony does not ask you to send. Sony warns that service may change settings or cause data loss. Its US guidance advises backing up storage, removing peripherals, and removing private or confidential content before shipment. The EEA terms warn that storage may be reformatted and advise backing up data and removing additional SSDs and other removable items as applicable.
- Back up important data before service.
- Remove private or confidential content and peripherals when Sony’s local instructions tell you to do so.
- Remove an additional SSD or other removable items if the applicable instructions require it.
- Follow Sony’s market-specific packing, shipping, or repair-center instructions; Malaysia’s example asks customers to bring the original invoice, packaging, and defective item.
Do not send accessories or removable storage unless Sony’s instructions for your service request call for them.
