Check the power bank’s watt-hour (Wh) rating, then compare it with the rules for your airline and route. Under current U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) passenger guidance, a spare lithium-ion battery up to 100 Wh may be carried without airline approval; one rated 101–160 Wh needs airline approval and is limited to two per person; above 160 Wh is not permitted. Power banks must travel in the cabin, not checked baggage.
How to check your power bank’s capacity
- Look for Wh on the power bank. The rating may be printed on its case or label. The FAA says the Wh rating should be marked; if it is not, calculate it from the voltage and capacity.
- Convert the capacity to amp-hours if needed. Divide milliamp-hours (mAh) by 1,000 to get amp-hours (Ah).
- Multiply volts by amp-hours. Use Wh = V × Ah. For example, a 20,000 mAh bank rated at 3.7 V is 20 Ah × 3.7 V = 74 Wh. This is an arithmetic example using the FAA formula, not a test of a particular product.
The FAA’s own example is 12 V × 8 Ah = 96 Wh. Its passenger guidance, last updated August 10, 2026, explains the calculation and U.S. capacity bands: FAA: Airline Passengers and Batteries.
Compare the Wh rating with U.S. passenger limits
| Power bank rating | FAA passenger guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0–100 Wh | Allowed as a spare lithium-ion battery in carry-on baggage. | Keep it in the cabin and check your airline’s current policy. |
| 101–160 Wh | Requires air-carrier approval. No more than two spare lithium-ion batteries in this range per person. | Get approval from the operating airline before you travel. |
| Above 160 Wh | Forbidden under the FAA passenger guidance. | Do not bring it on the flight. |
These are U.S. FAA passenger limits based on U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, not a guarantee that every airline or international route will accept a particular bank. The FAA notes that TSA, airlines, and international rules may be more restrictive. Check the current policy of each operating carrier, especially if the bank exceeds 100 Wh or your itinerary is international: FAA passenger guidance.

Pack the power bank in the cabin
Power banks are spare batteries, so they must be carried in carry-on baggage rather than checked baggage. If your carry-on is taken at the gate or checked planeside, remove the power bank and keep it with you in the cabin. The FAA’s PackSafe page also advises protecting battery terminals—for example, by keeping the bank in its original packaging or a protective pouch and away from loose metal objects: FAA PackSafe: Lithium Batteries.
