To find out whether a Pokémon can be shiny in Pokémon GO right now, check Niantic’s latest official event announcement for the exact species and form. To confirm a specific encounter, look for the shiny icon above its CP. These are separate checks: a Pokédex entry or a shiny you already caught does not prove that the Pokémon is currently available as a shiny.
Check whether the shiny is currently available
Niantic says that not every Pokémon species has an available shiny variant, and some shiny forms can be encountered only during specific events. Its general Shiny Pokémon help page directs players to Pokémon GO blog and event updates for availability information. Check the latest announcement before relying on an older report.

Make sure the announcement matches what you mean: the species, its form, the encounter route, and the event dates or eligibility. Regional, costume, or other event forms may have different appearances or availability. Niantic names Smeargle, Unown, and Meltan as examples of Pokémon whose shiny forms are limited to specific events; check the current event details rather than assuming one is available outside its event window.

When the Pokémon appears in an encounter, look above its CP for the shiny icon. Niantic identifies that icon as the confirmation of shiny status. Do not rely on color alone: a regional form can look different from its standard form without being shiny.

Ditto has a special disguise rule. It will not disguise itself as another shiny Pokémon, even if the Ditto itself is shiny; a shiny Ditto can disguise itself as a Pokémon that is not shiny.
Find shiny Pokémon already in your collection
Search your Pokémon inventory
Open your Pokémon inventory and search for shiny to find shiny Pokémon you have caught. Niantic explains this filter in its inventory search and filtering guide.

Check the Shiny Pokédex
Open the Pokédex and select the Shiny category to view shiny registration. An outline indicates a shiny form you have not caught, according to Niantic’s Pokédex guide.

These collection views record what you have registered or caught; they are not a live list of shiny-eligible encounters. A registered shiny or an outline does not establish that the form can be encountered now.

Encounter routes and odds
Niantic lists wild encounters, raid boss encounters, research breakthroughs, research task rewards, and other rewards as possible ways to encounter shiny Pokémon. Availability can depend on the species, form, route, and event. Niantic’s general help page does not provide species-specific odds for these routes, so do not infer odds from an announcement or Pokédex entry unless a current reliable source supplies them.

A quick check before you rely on a report
- Identify the exact Pokémon. Note its species and whether you mean a regional, costume, or other special form.
- Check the current official announcement. Confirm that the shiny is available during the stated dates and that your intended encounter route is covered.
- Use the encounter icon. If you meet it, look above CP for the shiny icon; do not decide from color alone.
- Use collection tools only for your catches. Search
shinyin your inventory or view the Shiny Pokédex to check your own collection, not present availability.
