To check whether a phone or laptop is repairable before you buy, look up the exact model and generation in an independent teardown scorecard and the manufacturer’s repair-support pages. Then check the parts you are most likely to replace, how difficult they are to access, whether parts and instructions are available, whether software restrictions apply, and what a repair would cost where you live.
Start with the exact model and configuration
Record the full product name, generation or release year, and configuration. A score or repair guide for a similarly named device may not apply, and laptop configurations can differ in whether memory or storage can be upgraded.
Search the manufacturer’s support site and an independent teardown scorecard for that exact device. iFixit says its phone and laptop engineers assess devices through teardowns and that its scoring rubric is updated, so read the model entry and the criteria for the scorecard version you are viewing rather than comparing old headline scores as if they used identical rules. iFixit repairability scorecards

Repairability varies by component. For each likely repair, find out whether the part can be replaced independently, what must be removed to reach it, and whether opening the device risks damage to another part.

For a phone
- Check the display, battery, charging port, and back cover.
- Look for adhesive, clips, screws, and the number or type of fasteners involved.
- Check whether reaching a common part requires removing a fragile screen or another major assembly.
For a laptop
- Check the battery, display, keyboard, storage, memory, fan, and ports.
- Find out which parts are modular and which are soldered or riveted into a larger assembly.
- Check whether an upgrade or repair requires removing other components first.
Model-specific examples show why brand-level assumptions are unreliable. iFixit’s current scorecard describes 2025 iPhone models with screen and battery access considerations, multiple screw types, and Apple-provided parts and instructions. Its Pixel 10 entry says screen repairs are prioritized and Google provides parts and instructions. For laptops, its page describes 2026 ThinkPad models with repairable or upgradeable memory and storage, and straightforward battery, display, keyboard, and fan replacement. By contrast, its MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5, 2025) entry identifies non-removable storage and a riveted keyboard, while also listing service material and parts. Verify that the repair ecosystem exists
Before buying, find a repair guide or service manual for the exact model. Check that it covers the repair you have in mind and that its detail and language suit the intended repairer. Then verify whether the manufacturer or a reputable supplier sells the relevant part and tools in your location.

- Instructions: Is a guide available, and does it cover the exact model?
- Parts: Can you find the correct replacement part, and is it available where you live?
- Tools: What tools and fasteners does the procedure require?
- Software: Does the replacement require calibration, part registration, or pairing that could limit an independent repair?
A device can be physically openable yet difficult to repair if documentation or parts are unavailable, or if software steps create barriers. iFixit treats parts, tools, documentation, and software restrictions as aspects of repairability. iFixit’s repairability criteria

France’s repairability index uses a 1-to-10 score and covers listed product categories that include laptops. Its five areas are documentation; ease of disassembly, access, tools, and fasteners; spare-parts availability; spare-parts price relative to the product; and category-specific criteria. For covered products, the score must be displayed at the point of purchase, with details accessible to consumers. French Ministry for Ecological Transition: repairability index
In the EU, smartphone and slate-tablet energy-label and ecodesign requirements began applying on 20 June 2025. The cited explainer describes information about repairability and durability, parts-availability periods, and software updates. It also notes that the EU score discussed there does not include spare-parts pricing and that the rules do not guarantee that every component is easy for a user to repair. These schemes have defined geographic and product coverage: the French source lists laptops among covered categories, while the cited EU source concerns smartphones and tablets. Do not assume every phone or laptop worldwide must carry the same score or label.
Compare the real cost and service options
A strong repairability score does not necessarily mean an affordable repair. Check current prices for the replacement part and any required tools, plus shipping and professional labor if you would not do the work yourself. Check the manufacturer’s support terms and warranty for the exact model, and ask a local repair shop whether it services the device and what it would charge. Availability, price, warranty consequences, and shop support can vary by model and location, so verify them directly rather than inferring them from a score.

France’s index explicitly weighs documentation, disassembly and tools, parts availability, and price; iFixit’s scorecards provide model-level teardown details and change their rubric over time.
