To find out whether a PC game will work offline, check the exact edition’s store listing and publisher requirements for internet, account, launcher, activation, and DRM requirements. Then distinguish a one-time online setup from a connection required every time you play. A launcher’s offline mode is not a guarantee that every game installed through it will run offline.
What does “play offline” need to mean for you?
“Offline” is not a single standardized storefront promise. Decide which of these you need before checking a listing:

- Offline launch: The game opens without an internet connection after installation and any required setup.
- Offline single-player: You can make progress in the single-player mode without connecting, even if other features are unavailable.
- Offline access to selected features: You can play some content, but multiplayer, live services, cloud saves, or other online features may not work.
A “single-player” label alone does not prove that the game can launch offline. The particular mode may still depend on account checks, activation, or servers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the exact game’s requirements before buying
- Confirm the edition and storefront. Check the listing for the precise version you intend to buy. Requirements can differ by release, edition, or where the game is obtained.
- Scan the listing and publisher documentation. Look for “internet connection required,” “online activation,” account requirements, a required launcher or client, and third-party DRM. EA’s PC legal disclosures illustrate how requirements such as an internet connection, EA Account, EA app, registration code, or third-party DRM may be specified; do not assume one disclosure applies to every EA game.
- Work out when the connection is needed. Determine whether internet is needed only to download or install, for first activation or sign-in, at every launch, or continuously during play. If the listing does not make this clear, check the game’s support information or ask the publisher before purchasing.
- Check the mode you plan to play. Multiplayer and live features depend on connectivity. For single-player, look for an explicit offline requirement or confirmation rather than inferring offline support from the mode label.
- Check the launcher’s rules. Its offline mode may have eligibility and setup conditions, so verify the particular game as well as the launcher.
What Steam and Epic’s offline modes do—and do not—tell you
| Launcher | What its official guidance says | What to verify for your game |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Steam Support says Offline Mode allows games to be played without an active Steam Network connection. It also says most games need an initial connected startup. | Launch the game online first and check for additional installation or update requirements. Steam notes that a game can appear ready yet still report that it cannot start in Offline Mode. |
| Epic Games Launcher | Epic Games Support describes Offline Mode for supported single-player games that are already installed. | Confirm that the specific title is supported and installed. Being single-player by itself does not establish offline eligibility. |
These are launcher-level instructions, not a guarantee about every game in a library. A publisher’s account, activation, or DRM requirements may also affect offline launch.
#1 Best Overall
- Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 is a story of brotherhood, faith and betrayal in a land soaked in the blood of civil war. You are an American sniper dropped behind enemy lines in Georgia, near the Russian border.
- Ruthless warlords have taken over part of the area and it falls on you to prevent the entire country from collapsing into chaos. Explore large open maps with dynamic weather and a day/night cycle that actually impacts your play and decisions.
- Be a Sniper: Engage your targets from the long range. Factor in scope elevation, wind speed and direction, breath control and stance, along with weapon and bullet choice.
- Be a Ghost: Stalk your enemies and eliminate them silently with a broad variety of takedowns. The advanced stealth gameplay includes drone recon and vertical navigation.
- Be a Warrior: Wield a wide variety of advanced weapons and modify them to suit the needs of your mission and your own personal style. Choose from assault rifles, shotguns, machine guns, and even explosives.
How to test offline play after purchase
The most reliable check is to test the installed game and the features you intend to use, before you depend on it away from an internet connection. Steam specifically recommends trying games before relying on Offline Mode.
- While connected, download, install, and update the game.
- Sign in or complete any activation or registration the game requires.
- Launch the game online and check that setup is complete and no further installation or update is requested.
- Use the launcher’s supported offline mode, if applicable, then disconnect the PC from the network.
- Start the game and try the mode and features you expect to use offline. Note whether the game launches, saves progress, or blocks any desired feature.
A successful test establishes how that installed version behaved at the time you tested it. It does not establish that future updates, another edition, or online-dependent features will work without a connection.

What to do when the listing is unclear
Do not treat silence about offline play as confirmation. Check the publisher’s current support documentation for the exact game and edition, or ask the publisher whether internet is required after installation, at every launch, or during play—and whether the answer changes for single-player. Storefront and client requirements can change, so recheck close to purchase if offline access is important.
