Before buying, check the exact gadget model against four things: your phone and its required app, the smart-home platform you plan to use, the gadget’s connection type, and any hub or network requirements. A Matter logo is a useful start, not a guarantee that every platform supports every device type or feature.

1. Find the exact model and intended setup

Write down the gadget’s full model number and the smart-home app you want to control it with, such as Google Home, Apple Home, or Alexa. A product-family name or a general claim that a device is “smart” is not enough: requirements can differ between models.

Open the manufacturer’s product page and setup instructions for that model. Check the required phone operating system, companion app, connection protocol or Wi-Fi band, and whether a hub or bridge is needed. Setup instructions may change with app and firmware updates, so use the current instructions rather than relying only on an old review or listing.

2. Check your phone and app

Confirm both that your phone meets the platform’s requirements and that the gadget maker’s app supports your phone and operating-system version. Platform-level support does not override a manufacturer’s app requirement.

  • Google Home Matter setup: Google lists Android 8.1 or later with Google Play services 22.48.14 or later, or an iPhone or iPad with iOS 16.5 or later. Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher is also required for pairing. See Google’s Matter setup requirements.
  • Apple: Apple says Matter support is included in iOS 16.1 and later. That is a general operating-system support statement, not a substitute for checking the gadget maker’s app requirements. See Apple’s Matter support documentation.

For Apple accessories, Apple describes the setup flow this way: “Once the user scans the setup code, iPhone will automatically provision the accessory onto Wi-Fi or Thread, as appropriate.”

3. Match the connection type to your network and hubs

Find out whether the gadget connects over Wi-Fi or Thread. Matter devices can use either, and the requirements are different.

Wi-Fi devices

Check the maker’s listed Wi-Fi requirements, including any specified band, and confirm your network meets them. For Matter devices used with Google Home, Google says IPv6 must be enabled on the home wireless network. Without it, setup can sometimes appear to work at first, but control and other functions may later fail. Google also distinguishes hubs that support Wi-Fi Matter devices from hubs that support both Wi-Fi and Thread devices; see Google’s Matter home-preparation guidance.

Thread devices

A Thread device needs a Thread Border Router on the intended smart-home platform. Check whether a hub you already own provides that function; a hub’s presence alone does not prove that it supports Thread. Google lists the Thread Border Router requirement in its Matter setup instructions. Amazon’s Thread documentation lists supported Thread-capable Echo and eero products and explains its Works with Alexa certification; the page was last updated May 1, 2026.

4. Verify platform and device-type support

Look for the relevant Works with [platform] or Matter badge on the box or official product listing. A badge is a good initial check, but also confirm that the platform supports the gadget’s category and the features you care about. Support can vary by ecosystem, and a device may offer different functions in different apps.

  • For Google Home, look for Works with Google Home or Matter, then check the current Google Home compatibility information for the device type. Google notes that its supported-device list can change.
  • For Alexa, Amazon describes Works with Alexa as its compatibility certification. Check the product’s exact model and capabilities against the maker’s information and Amazon’s Thread and Works with Alexa documentation.

5. If you want more than one smart-home platform

Matter multi-admin can let you share a device with more than one certified app, but it does not mean one hub automatically serves every platform. Google says each platform app needs its own compatible Matter hub. Check that each intended platform supports the device type, the features you want, and any required hub. Google explains the sharing process and platform-specific hub requirement in its Matter multi-admin instructions.

6. Use this pre-purchase checklist

  1. Record the gadget’s exact model number and the platform or app you plan to use.
  2. On the manufacturer’s product and setup pages, verify phone OS and app requirements, network or protocol requirements, and hub or bridge requirements.
  3. Check the official listing or packaging for the relevant Matter or Works with [platform] badge, then verify the platform supports that device category and the features you need.
  4. Identify whether the device uses Wi-Fi or Thread. For Thread, confirm that the intended ecosystem has a compatible Thread Border Router. For Google Home Matter use, confirm IPv6 is enabled on your home network.
  5. If you plan to use multiple platforms, check each one separately, including whether it needs its own compatible hub.
  6. If a requirement remains unclear, ask the manufacturer whether the exact model works with your phone, network, and intended platform before buying.
