To check whether a laptop charger is compatible, identify your exact laptop model and verify that it supports charging through the charger’s port, uses the charger’s required protocol, and can receive the charger’s voltage and power output. The plug fitting—or a USB-C connector matching—is not enough to prove compatibility.
Find the requirements for your exact laptop
Start with the full model name or number, then consult the laptop’s manual, official specifications, or manufacturer support page. Look for its supported charging port, adapter requirements, voltage and wattage, required charging protocol, and any approved replacement part numbers. If the information is unclear, ask the manufacturer or seller to confirm compatibility with the complete model number.
These requirements are model-specific. The same brand can sell laptops with different charging ports and power needs, so a charger that works with one model may not work with another.
Compare candidate chargers in this order
- Confirm that the laptop accepts charging through the connector. A USB-C port may support data or display output without accepting power. Dell cautions that a USB-C-shaped connector alone does not establish that a laptop can charge from a USB-C adapter; check the exact model’s documentation. Dell’s adapter guidance explains this distinction.
- Check the charging protocol. For USB-C charging, verify that the laptop supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD) and that the charger supports it. Apple says a Mac that charges over USB-C can use a USB-C adapter or display that supports USB PD; that guidance applies to USB-C-charging Macs, not every Mac. Apple’s Mac adapter guidance gives the qualification. Lenovo likewise documents USB-C PD charging for specific computers, rather than making a blanket claim about all USB-C laptops. Lenovo’s ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 documentation is model-specific.
- Match the output to the laptop’s documented requirements. Compare voltage and available wattage with the exact model’s specifications. A charger that supplies insufficient power may charge slowly or stop charging while the laptop is in use, as Lenovo notes for the ThinkBook 16p Gen 4. Do not assume a wattage that works for one laptop is sufficient for another.
- Verify the connector, cable, and any recognition requirements. For a barrel plug or proprietary connector, use the approved replacement part or confirm the connector specifications for that laptop. Matching plug dimensions do not establish electrical compatibility. Check cable requirements separately; there is no universal cable rule established for every laptop.
- Check safety approval and manufacturer compatibility. Lenovo advises choosing a safety-approved or certified third-party USB-C charger for the ThinkBook 16p Gen 4. HP recommends the supplied adapter, an HP replacement, or a compatible adapter purchased from HP, with voltage and wattage matched to the notebook. HP’s AC adapter guidance describes its recommendations.
USB-C charger compatibility
USB-C is a connector shape, not a guarantee that a laptop will charge from any USB-C power source. Confirm that the specific port accepts charging and that the laptop and charger support a compatible protocol, such as USB PD. Then compare the charger’s output with the laptop’s documented needs. A successful connection does not necessarily mean the charger supplies enough power for normal use.

Apple’s guidance is relatively broad but still conditional: “If your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge your Mac laptop with any USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD).” This statement does not mean all Mac models use the same connector or need the same amount of power. For other brands, follow the exact model’s support documentation rather than extrapolating from Apple’s guidance.
Barrel-plug and proprietary chargers
For a round barrel connector or another model-specific plug, check the manufacturer’s approved adapter part number and electrical requirements. Do not rely on a plug that appears to fit: voltage, wattage, connector details, or model compatibility may still differ. HP’s recommendation is to use the supplied adapter, an HP replacement, or a compatible adapter purchased from HP, while matching the notebook’s voltage and wattage requirements.

Quick compatibility checklist
- Identify the laptop’s full model number.
- Confirm that the port you plan to use supports charging.
- For USB-C, verify support for USB PD on both the laptop and charger.
- Compare the charger’s voltage and wattage with the model’s specified input.
- For a barrel or proprietary plug, confirm the approved replacement part and connector specifications.
- Check cable requirements and use a safety-approved charger.
- Do not use a visibly damaged adapter, plug, or cable.
- When uncertain, get confirmation for the complete laptop model before buying.
If the charger connects but charging is unreliable
A laptop can recognize a charger yet charge slowly or fail to keep charging while in use if the charger does not provide enough power. Recheck the exact model’s power requirements and the charger’s output rather than treating physical connection as proof of a match. If the adapter, plug, or cable is visibly damaged, stop using it; the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal repair or testing procedure.
