To check whether a grocery app price matches the in-store price, verify the selected store, exact item and unit, offer conditions, and sales channel—then compare the shelf tag with the checkout scan. An app price is not automatically the price at the shelf: retailer rules and marketplace pricing vary. This guide focuses on U.S. examples; local price-correction rules differ.
What to compare before deciding there is a mismatch
Check these details in order. A difference may come from comparing two different stores, products, offers, or pricing channels rather than from a checkout error.
- Store: Make sure the app has the exact branch selected—the one you are visiting.
- Channel: Identify whether the price is from the retailer’s own app or website, a third-party marketplace, pickup, delivery, or an in-store shelf tag.
- Item: Match the brand, variety, size, weight, count, and package. A similar-looking product is not necessarily the same item.
- Unit: Compare like with like, such as price per item against price per item, or price per pound against price per pound.
- Offer: Check whether the displayed amount is a regular price, sale price, loyalty-member price, activated digital coupon, bundle, or minimum-purchase deal. Compare the price before and after discounts separately.
- Timing: Check that the app listing, shelf label, and scan reflect the same current offer. Prices and promotions can change.
- Final charge: For weighed goods, compare the estimated amount with the actual weight and receipt. The final price can change when the item is weighed.
How to check the price while shopping
- Select the store you are visiting. Open the retailer app and verify the branch or location setting before relying on a displayed price. Do not assume a delivery, pickup, or other-branch price applies to the shelf in front of you.
- Open the exact product listing. Confirm its brand, size, package count, variety, and unit basis. For produce or other goods sold by weight, distinguish a per-pound price from an estimated total.
- Read the offer details. Look for membership requirements, coupon activation, purchase limits, and whether the offer applies to in-store purchases. If it is a third-party marketplace listing, find its pricing-policy disclosure.
- Compare the shelf tag and scan. Check the shelf label and watch the price when the item is scanned. If the register price differs, ask staff to verify the current price and applicable offer before paying.
- Keep evidence for follow-up. Save the receipt and note the store and time. If the retailer permits it, keep a photo of the shelf label and show the current offer in the app. Follow that retailer’s proof rules: for its price-match process, Target says shoppers may show the current price on a mobile device, but screenshots and pictures are not accepted.
The Federal Trade Commission’s 1998 scanner-pricing report advises consumers to point out errors at checkout, ask about the store’s correction policy, and review the receipt afterward.

Why grocery app and shelf prices can differ
The app is showing a different store or channel
A delivery or pickup listing may not reflect the price at the branch’s shelf. Third-party marketplace prices can also differ from a retailer’s in-store prices. Instacart’s help page, hosted by ALDI U.S., says retailers set marketplace item prices; some use everyday store prices, while others charge differently, and some in-store sales may not apply. The app’s retailer pricing policy appears beneath the retailer name or logo. See Instacart’s item-pricing information.

A coupon or loyalty deal has conditions
A lower price may require a loyalty account, an activated digital coupon, or a qualifying purchase. A displayed deal may also be limited to online orders or may not combine with a price match. Check the terms rather than comparing only the headline price.
The item is sold by weight
For weighed produce or counter items, an app total may be an estimate. Instacart says the final price can adjust to the actual weight. Compare the unit price and final receipt amount, not just the initial estimate.

Store prices have changed or promotions are not synchronized
The FTC’s 2026 notice on online food delivery says grocery items sold through delivery platforms can be “on average 10% higher than in-store prices,” before platform fees. That figure is attributed to media reports cited by the FTC, not to an FTC experiment; it does not predict the price of a particular item or retailer. The notice also says loyalty-program linkage and synchronization with weekly or daily store-price changes can contribute to differences. Read the FTC notice with those limits in mind.
Retailer policies are not interchangeable
A retailer may offer a price match, but that does not establish a universal rule that app prices must match shelf prices. Read the policy for the chain and transaction you are using.

Target
Target says pricing and promotions may vary by store and online. For its app-based price-match process, the app must show the current store location, and staff can verify the current price on the shopper’s mobile device. Target’s grocery price-match eligibility depends on an identical item and unit of measure; exclusions apply to some offers, coupons, and locations. Consult Target’s Price Match Guarantee for the current rules.
Walmart
Walmart’s U.S. policy says an in-store purchase may be matched to the price of an identical item advertised on Walmart.com, subject to restrictions; the manager on duty makes the final decision. Walmart.com purchases generally are not matched to store or competitor prices. This is a limited policy example, not a general promise that an app price will match a grocery shelf tag. What to do if the checkout price is higher
- Raise it before paying. Show the shelf label or current offer and ask the cashier or customer-service staff to check the item, store, and offer conditions.
- Ask what correction applies. The store may have a correction policy, but the remedy depends on the retailer and location. Do not assume a particular discount or refund is guaranteed.
- Review the receipt. Confirm the scanned price and any discounts before leaving. Keep the receipt if the issue needs follow-up.
- Escalate recurring problems. Contact store management first. For repeated scanner-pricing issues, the FTC’s 1998 report suggests contacting state or local consumer-protection offices or weights-and-measures officials. The available remedy depends on the law and guidance where you shop.
