A furniture sale is only a good deal if the exact item’s delivered price compares well with other current offers—and its condition and purchase terms work for you. Check the model and configuration, compare the full cost, then treat the advertised markdown as a claim to verify rather than proof of savings.

Identify the exact item before comparing prices

Furniture that looks similar can differ in dimensions, materials, included pieces, or configuration. Record the manufacturer or brand, model number, size, finish or color, upholstery or other materials, included components, and condition. Also note delivery and assembly terms. The Federal Trade Commission’s online-shopping guide recommends noting the manufacturer or model number and details such as size, color, and shipping fees.

Compare offers for the same model and configuration. If a seller will not provide a model number or enough detail to verify a match, say so in your assessment: the comparison is less certain. A product that merely resembles another is not reliable evidence that either price is a bargain.

Compare current offers for the same configuration

Look up the exact item at other retailers and compare prices currently offered. Shopping comparison sites or price alerts can help locate offers, but verify each listing with the seller. The FTC cautions that some comparison sites promote their own products or rank sellers based on payment.

Check whether each listing is for new, floor-sample, open-box, damaged, or outlet-specific merchandise. Outlet products are not necessarily identical to a retailer’s regular-line goods. The California Department of Justice’s outlet-shopping guidance says outlets primarily sell items made or bought specifically for outlets and warns that “compare at” prices may refer to goods never sold at the higher price. That is California-specific guidance, not a claim that every outlet operates the same way.

Calculate the delivered total

Compare what you would actually pay for each offer, not just the price on the tag. Add the item price, applicable delivery or shipping, handling, taxes, and other fees. Include required add-ons and account for differences in delivery or assembly if they affect the cost or service you receive.

The FTC’s comparison-shopping advice recommends calculating total cost and reading the deal terms and full description. Fees and delivery terms vary by seller and location, so check the actual checkout total and terms for each offer rather than assuming a single nationwide furniture-fee rule.

Test the advertised discount against real prices

A large “percent off,” crossed-out price, “was” price, “regular” price, or “compare at” figure does not by itself establish a bargain. FTC guidance on former-price comparisons says a former price should be a bona fide price at which the item was offered regularly for a reasonably substantial period. The guidance does not set a universal number of days.

Be especially cautious with liquidation markdowns. The FTC’s guidance on going-out-of-business sales warns that markdowns may be based on MSRP, which can be higher than the prices stores typically charged. An advertised discount against MSRP may therefore leave an item costing more than it did before the sale. Use other sellers’ current offers for the same item as a practical check; do not infer savings from the discount percentage alone.

Check condition, delivery, and return terms

Before deciding, confirm what you are buying and what happens if the transaction does not meet expectations. Inspect or ask about the finish, materials, damage, and completeness, and check the promised delivery timing. Read the full description and terms, including whether sale or clearance items have different return rules.

Rank #4
  • Is the item eligible for return, and what is the return window?
  • Who pays return shipping or pickup costs?
  • Are there restocking charges or other return fees?
  • Does the seller offer a price match or price adjustment, and what conditions apply?
  • Are delivery and assembly included, optional, or separately charged?

The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking sale-item return policies, reading the full product description, and asking about price matching. These terms can change the practical value of two offers even when their delivered totals are close.

Decide whether the price is actually good

Ask: “How do I know if a furniture deal is actually a good price?” It looks like a good deal when you have a reliable match for the exact item, its delivered total compares favorably with other current offers, and its condition and purchase terms suit your needs. If there is no reliable exact match, you cannot establish that it is a bargain from the advertised markdown alone.

For a quick check, use this order: identify the model and configuration; compare current offers; calculate each delivered total; verify the reference price; and assess condition and terms. This keeps a persuasive sale label from substituting for a meaningful comparison.
